Quiet location, good size cottage which is nicely decorated, clean and well equipped. Parking right outside the door was excellent to have. Good size garden for the better weather. My only negative comment would be that the beds are to firm for us, but of course that is a personal preference. We would be happy to stay here again when in the area.

5 stars all the way. A beautiful cottage, in a lovely location, deep in the countryside, but with both Thirsk and Northallerton in easy reach.Very warm, welcoming, and well equipped, with everything we needed and more. The photographs didn't do it justice. Being tastefully decorated, and furnished with a great deal of thought and attention to detail. The hosts were nearby, and Neil was evident daily around the farm, always happy to offer advice on the local area and places to visit, without imposing. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage, and we look forward to returning in December.

. Also, the single beds were not comfortable for older people, the base proved awkward when getting out of bed with the mattress being sunk into the base rather than a divan base and the corners were a slight hazard

  • "I stayed here during the month of March with my elderly mother and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

Apple Tree Cottage ticked many of our boxes. Interior space, a location with splendid views, and the utter peace of the place. We were treated to a snowfall on our first day which added magic to the landscape. Neil met us on arrival to check we were settling in and we got to chat with Ruth our neighbour for the week. Other than that we were left to ourselves. Neil said that if we had any questions or concerns then he and his wife were not far away which was reassuring. The cottage is well-appointed and clean. Being hypercritical I would say that on some of the saucepans the nonstick coating is looking quite worn. Also the addition of a bread knife to the utensils in the kitchen would be helpful. Other than those small observations there was plenty to love about the cottage. I’ve never used such a big bathroom! We are English Heritage members and enjoyed a visit to Mount Grace Priory. We didn’t expect to visit in winter and in the snow. Worth a visit in all seasons. We also got to go to Runswick Bay in glorious sunshine on another day and a drive over to the Dales on another. The Buttertubs road is quite a drive! We have already booked a return visit in September and, needless to say, are really looking forward to it!

Peaceful surroundings. Good location to get to most places nearby, very restful sleep and friendly owners. The only criticism we have is the cleanliness of the kitchen appliances that we noticed - oven, toaster, microwave and kettle - all in need of a very deep clean or total replacement. We also noticed the water was not very hot but on this matter we may have missed an obvious solution. We had a good stay overall.

Everything you could possibly want is within the cottage and it's spotlessly clean. The rooms are very spacious with lovely furnishings. The beds are very comfortable and we had no trouble sleeping. Only improvement ( and it's very minor ) is perhaps some pots along the window that is next to the dining area with some tall shrubs just to give you that feeling of privacy. Saying this , we actually only saw the lovely lady who lives in the main building probably twice. The cottage is very quiet with excellent WI-FI.

  • "After reading the glowing reviews for this cottage, it seemed like the perfect place to spend a week for my husband’s 70th birthday."

The cottage is very spacious, light and airy, but seriously let down by poor housekeeping and a very untidy garden. On arrival we were greeted in the utility room by a vacuum cleaner that was full to bursting with dirt and a dirty looking mop and bucket. No hand sanitiser was available. The kitchen was relatively clean looking, but all the windows in the cottage were filthy. I understand this is on a farm but they hadn’t been cleaned inside or out for quite a while. Crockery could do with an update and we couldn’t find an egg cup! The so called 2 plush sofas are marked and ripped and didn’t look too clean. In fact I was looking for something I had lost and felt down the side of the sofa and came out with a pencil and a teaspoon and lots of dirt. I didn’t look any further. Obviously no one had considered hoovering down the sides of the sofa cushions. The sofas are very low, made worse by sagging seats. We had to pad them up with throws and cushions. The pictures in the living room had not seen a duster for a fair while as I actually wrote my name in the dust. I did get a duster and spray out and cleaned them, including the tops which were black. Also dusted the base and back of the tv. The upstairs bedroom, which is very pleasant and spacious, has no wardrobe or anything to hang clothes on, which was confusing. My sister and brother in law had to hang their clothes on the bathroom towel rail and door hook. Good job they were already on hangers as there were none provided. Downstairs bedroom was ok but decorated with cobwebs in the corners and attaching the top of the wardrobe to the ceiling. The top of the wardrobe or the pictures, hadn’t seen a duster for some time. Also the bottom of the wardrobe was very dusty, which I didn’t discover until I took some clothes out and they were dusty too. Could do with a chair/stool or something in the bedroom as nothing to put clothes on, especially as the drawer in the wardrobe seemed to have a duvet stuffed in it. Handles on dressing table broken making it very difficult to open the drawers. The wet room, which had been very attractive to us, as my husband is disabled, is very spacious, with a nice shower seat, bath etc, but no grab rail and the flooring is not proper wet room flooring, which made it like a skating rink when wet or damp. Certainly not ideal for the fleet of foot, never mind the less mobile. On first use the shower flooded the wet room and we had to put towels around it to stop the water flowing all over. I did contact Louisa and she said the drain must be blocked with dog hair as the previous occupants used it to bath their big hairy dog!! I was dumbfounded that she would even admit this to me. She said to use the drain clear and it would eat through the hair. Obviously, big hairy dogs don’t find the floor too slippery. Understandably, we were reluctant to use the shower after this as we had rather lost confidence in it having being cleaned at all. I used the upstairs one but unfortunately my husband was unable to get up the stairs and had to make do. We decided to have a BBQ and went to the shed to get the table and chairs. Two seats were ok but the other two were well attached to the shed with cobwebs. Luckily I had taken 2 seats with us so we didn’t have to risk being wound up in a spiders web. The table was pretty filthy, covered with webs, bird dirt and sticky drink marks. I had to give it a good clean down before we could use it. Couldn’t find any anti bacterial spray though, which I would have thought was essential during a pandemic. Why aren’t these things checked and why weren’t the table and chairs already out? It is the height of the summer and that metal table is very heavy. We put it back in the shed a hell of a lot cleaner than we got it out. The grass needed badly cutting and the little garden feature in the middle was overgrown and untidy as well as weeds all through the sitting/walking area, which was so difficult to walk on without twisting an ankle, because of the sharp uneven stones used. Again my husband struggled badly on these as did we all. This cottage is in a lovely position, is a nice roomy place and could be beautiful, but so let down with very poor housekeeping and an untidy and not very accessible garden. On a positive note, the beds were very comfortable and appeared to be clean, so that was a bonus. Also plenty of power points etc. We emptied the vacuum before we cleaned up after ourselves and we certainly left the cottage much cleaner than we found it! We were so disappointed that the cottage cleanliness was a very poor standard for normal times, never mind during a pandemic.

The property

In the hilltop village of Borrowby, there sits a working farm where this property, Apple Tree Cottage rests opposite the owner's home, in this delightful part of Yorkshire.

Ideally suited for a family or a couple, this property boasts bright and refreshing decor, while from the outside keeping its farmhouse country charm.

An open-plan living space invites you into the property, with the sitting area having two large plush sofas facing a TV for when a quiet evening of home entertainment is on the cards.

Across the way is the dining table which sits next to the windows that will pour in the last natural light of the evening just as you sit down to eat.

You can cook those delicious meals in the spacious contemporary kitchen, complete with integrated electric oven, overlooking the rest of the room, so you can be the chef and still be involved in the conversation!

One of the property's best features would have to be the ground-floor wet room, which is fantastic for those less able as it has a wall-fixed shower seat, and a separate bath, with another door which joins onto the delightful ground-floor twin room.

Head up the stairs and be further impressed by the vast master bedroom; four velux windows light up the room with sunshine and bounce off the sloping ceilings, with your own flatscreen TV up there as well for those lazy Sunday mornings in bed.

The adjoining en-suite bathroom is a real treat, where you can sink into the free-standing bath tub to soak in peace, or use the separate walk-in shower if time is of the essence, the choice is yours!

You will really appreciate the large lawned area outside in the summer, perfect for keeping the kids entertained outside, while you can sip a nice cold drink on the garden table and chairs.

About the location

NORTHALLERTON

Thirsk 9 miles.

Northallerton is a County town and administrative centre of North Yorkshire, located at the foot of a ridge dividing two river basin areas, the Wiske and the Cod Beck, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the edge of the Vale of York, between the Hambleton Hills and the Yorkshire Dales. This thriving town boasts market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when both sides of the High Street are home to stalls selling a wide range of goods and produce, plus on the fourth Wednesday of the month the market is joined by a farmers' market. Despite its modest size, Northallerton has a number of independent and national shops, including Betty’s Tea Rooms, Lewis & Cooper, an outstanding delicatessan and wine merchant, award-winning butcher’s, artisan baker, greengrocers, two department stores, several supermarkets and bookshops. With good rail links to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Durham and York, the activities are not just restricted to the countryside. Situated equidistant between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, the opportunities for exploration are endless. These include a day at the races at one of the many local courses, including Thirsk, a family trip to the unique Forbidden Corner at Middleham, a trip to a country house such as Newby Hall, Kiplin Hall and Castle Howard, or a round of golf. The restored Victorian resort of Saltburn, plus the pretty beaches and coves of Runswick Bay, Sand's End and Robin Hood's Bay, along with the town of Whitby, are all within one hour's drive away.
