About the location
Bedale 4 miles; Masham 7 miles.
The pretty village of Carthorpe lies east of Masham and south of Bedale at the entrance to Wensleydale and the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park. A well laid out village with a lovely mixture of old and new dwellings built in the stylish red brick of the area, with at the centre being an award-winning pub, The Fox and Hounds. Close by is Aerial Extreme, which offers a high ropes course, and within reach is the historic, little market town of Masham, which is situated alongside the River Ure. Set in gently rolling farmland, the town boasts a huge market square, where a Wednesday market has recently been joined by a popular Saturday market. There are lots of walks around the area, including a 10 mile walk along the Ure, arguably one of the best walks in the UK. Masham boasts a range of crafts, galleries, shops, restaurants and pubs, and is the home to the Black Sheep Brewery, which now brews 11 million pints of beer a year! The popular towns of Badale and Ripon are an easy drive away. Gardeners will enjoy the Thorp Perrow Arboretum and the gardens at Constable Burton, and don't miss the weird and wonderful "Forbidden Corner" near Middleham! Ideally placed for exploring all of Wensleydale, Swaledale and Wharfedale, and the city of York which is less than an hour away.
