"The cottage was beautiful."
It was clean, warm and there was provision of everything that could be possibly needed. The inclusion of treats etc. for our dog was excellent. The setting is idyllic and the owners are nearby if needed which was reassuring. This is the second year we have visited, last year we stayed in the other cottage which was just as warm, comfortable and welcoming as this one. Neither cottages have internet, but we were aware of this and found it a release from the outside life
-
"Great cottage,in nice location."
Pity no WiFi or phone signal though.kind of felt isolated if in emergency.other than that thoroughly enjoyed staying there.
-
"It was our 3rd Holiday at Plum Tree Cottage it was still tranquil and peaceful, beautiful part of Yorkshire Alan & Karen are very kind and Friendly, lovely places to visit, Whitby, Scarborough & Pickering etc, and driving on the moors is a breathtaking scenery."
-
"A fabulous property - very clean and well equipped in a beautiful area."
Great outside area. Lovely local pub with friendly staff serving superb food and beer. I missed that the property didn’t have WiFi (my fault) and we couldn’t get a phone reception but it was actually quite nice having a tech detox! Owners were great - available if needed.
-
"Plum tree cottage is the best accommodation we have stayed at it’s very clean and everything was high end."
Alan and Karen were there on hand if needed and the cottage is a credit to them. The cottage is perfect for exploring the surrounding countryside. We enjoyed the holiday that much we have booked again for next year.
-
"Fabulous cottage, very welcoming hosts too."
Great place to stay to explore the surrounding area
-
"This was our second visit to Plum Tree Cottage."
Everything was just as perfect as our last visit. The cottage is so homely, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Just sitting in the bay window watching the birds was a delight. Woodpeckers, mallards, ring doves, jackdaws, sparrows, tits and finches etc. The Harlands are a lovely couple unobtrusive but on hand should there be a problem. The location is ideal for walkers and exploring the area. We didn’t want to leave and neither did our Newfoundland! We had a wonderful holiday and hopefully will be back.
-
"This cottage was excellent."
It is the cleanest cottage I have stayed at.
-
"This is our second time at this property, so it speaks well of our time there as we would not have returned."
The cottage is warm, cosy and comfortable and in a peaceful environment. There is a rail station almost on the doorstep and it’s only a half mile to the nearest shop. The accommodation is first class, with almost all the facilities one could need. Thankfully no mobile signal! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Alan and Karen, and the family of ducks!
-
"Very clean , comfortable, well equipped cottage especially the kitchen."
The coffee, tea bags, sugar, cake and biscuits were much appreciated. A hairdryer was provided by request.
-
"Excellent"
-
"Just returned from another totally amazing stay at Plum Tree Cottage."
Once again everything was perfect. Clean and cosy and the biscuits and cake were most appreciated on arrival. The last review on here was quite unnecessary. The description of Plum Tree Cottage clearly states the steps down to the cottage. These are shallow and very accessible. We are in our 50's and had no problems what so ever. Alan & Karen just leave guests to enjoy their holiday unless you need them. We had no trouble with our Internet at the cottage at all and could make and receive calls without going to the top of the hill. Can't praise this place enough!! Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at Plum Tree, we'll be back next year.

"When we arrived after a 5+ hour journey, within minutes of arriving we were greeted by the owner who stared at us and made us feel uncomfortable, especially my wife, who was stared at through the kitchen window, which has no privacy window and then commented you have a dog…."
, did you not put it on the booking form, I replied that I had booked it on the phone and mentioned it. A small Dashund that’s all, they way he looked as if it was a New Foundland, as he mentioned he had week before, he said it it was not an issue, but kept mentioning it, so it was. He made us feel not welcome and no mention of having a good holiday, did not feel great after this, in fact put us on edge all week, which is not how a holiday should be. We are considerate people who looked after other people’s homes and make sure we keep place’s tidy and especially when we have a dog, a small on of that. He even stared at me when I was unpacking the car, made me feel uncomfortable. We loved the cottage, but not ideal in terms of steps for my wife who has disabilities, which we were of, but not that they were quite steep, was not allowed to leave the back door light on, due to neighbours complaining, also no lighting where you park the car, very poor, especially when you return home in the dark and having to navigate your way to the gate. Even when we went to the pub through the garden, we had to take a torch, so that we could see.. Also being in our fifties, there are so many rules and regulations by Sykes and the owner, if feels like being at school again, treat us like Adults please, we are responsible people; can not do this, can not do that, never booked somewhere with Sykes before and with so many rules, made us feel uncomfortable, not required. Also no mention of lack of internet or even able to make a phone call in the literature, appalling really in the 21st century, we had to go up on a hill to make a call to check in my mother who is in her eighties and not well or to speak to my wife’s relatives. There really needs to have some way of calling people from the cottage. We left the place as we saw it, as we would anyway and even brought blankets to cover the furniture, as we have a small dog and not a New Foundland. The bedroom window had no privacy curtain either, you had to close the curtains, to get privacy, as you were overlooked… The property was warm and cosy over all.
-
"A lovely cottage, which was warm and cosy on our arrival."
We found the cottage to be well maintained, clean and tidy. The cake and biscuits waiting for our arrival were a lovely surprise. We would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to explore the North York Moors. We had a lovely week in Castleton and we have every intention of coming again. P, S and the Big Black Dog!
-
"The cottage was loverly and very clean"
-
"Very comfortable cottage in a great location"
-
"Beautiful dog friendly cottage in the heart of the North Yorks Moors."
Very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We would certainly recommend it.
-
"This cottage is amazing & absolutely perfect."
Myself, wife & our dog loved it, shop 10mins away, pub/restaurant 2mins away & the train station 1min away. The cottage has everything you need for a holiday. Lovely kitchen, living room, bedroom & a brilliant shower for after our walks. We loved it that much we have already booked for next year, while we was there. Can't recommend it enough.
-
"This was my second holiday at Plum Tree Cottage ."
It’s spotlessly clean, very comfortable and has a lovely peaceful garden. As the cottage has no Wi-Fi we take our own EE Wi-Fi box which is rechargeable. The cottage is a great base for exploring Yorkshire.
-
"Plum Tree Cottage, Castleton."
A lovely cottage, fitted out extremely well. It is situated in an ideal location to explore the surrounding area. The cottage is extremely spacious and suited our purpose for some rest and relaxation.A lovely garden to enjoy. Railway station and pub/restaurant only 2 or 3 minutes away. The accomodation was of such a high standard that we are thinking of going there again next year.
-
"Plum Tree Cottage is clean, very comfortable and has everything you could wish for as a home away from home."
It was wonderful to have our own enclosed garden, safe and secure for our dog. The peaceful and beautiful location made for a relaxing holiday although close to shop and pub and ideally located for visiting the coast and moors. We had a really lovely holiday and felt welcomed by our hosts Alan and Karen. Hoping to return soon..
-
"A wonderful holiday cottage, with an enclosed garden, perfect for us and our dog."
An excellent location for exploring the area and coastline.
-
"This was our second visit to this property and again it was an all round excellent stay."
The property and its owners are really lovely. I have recommended this property to several of our friends and relatives. We would stay again at this property in a heartbeat.
-
"We have written in the guest book that this was a gem of a property, booked the Eskdale Restaurant which was only about 100 yards from the cottage & also had a lovely train ride to Whitby from the train station that was just 50 yards from the cottage, would book again in the future."
-
"A lovely cottage felt so relaxed train station at bottom of garden but didn't ..."
A lovely cottage felt so relaxed train station at bottom of garden but didn't hear any trains a wonderful place to stay chill and relax
-
"Once again it was an absolute pleasure to stay at Plumtree Cottage."
It’s perfectly located for visiting the towns & villages of The North Yorkshire Moors & coast. Alan & Karen are perfect hosts. We never tire of coming back to Plumtree Cottage for a totally relaxing holiday with our dog Holly.
-
"A lovely cottage, I have hired many cottages over the years and this was the best."
Very cosy, comfortable and tastefully furnished, the property is well placed to discover the North Yorkshire Dales. I would recommend that the property has WiFi in the future as limited mobile phone coverage as l experienced no signal on my O2 phone.
-
"Plum tree cottage was really cosy place to stay."
All home comforts lovely biscuits and cake and even doggie towels and treats for Mollie. Ideal location to explore the North Yorkshire Moors by car and some good walking routes. Our weather not to bad but at other times o the year ideal for enjoying the garden. Unfortunately I forgot my hair dryer and there wasn't one at the property not to worry I managed but need to take one. Also because it was a bit wet could of done with a mop for the kitchen floor. Other than that was a really lovely place .
-
"Find cottage dark inside ."
Needed lights on .all time in the cottage .didn’t find many dog walks from cottage.plus steep steps down to cottage .plus thought garden to front belong to cottage.didn’t know there was another cottage that looked onto you
-
"Cottage was clean and comfy."
Lovely location, wonderful food served in the 2 local pubs and easy access to explore the beautiful countryside.. Nowhere in listing does it mention a 2nd letting property which overlooks living room and people looking in and walking past. There was a disgusting smell of septic tank/blocked drains all week which owner was aware of but did not resolve so unable to have windows open or sit out in the garden. Having no WiFi or phone signal was not ideal and this was not in listing, only found in previous reviews.
-
"Lovely immaculate cottage has everything you need."
The only disadvantage would be the Wi-Fi intermittent other than that overall had a lovely relaxing stay would recommend.
-
"We were welcomed with cake, biscuits and dog treats."
The cottage is very comfortable, very clean, with everything needed for a relaxing break. There is no WiFi or mobile phone signal but there are plenty of information leaflets, books and maps to help plan days out. I would definitely go back.
-
"Another fabulous stay in a beautiful area!"
Plum Tree is a wonderful cottage, so comfortable and spotlessly clean! Everything you would wish for and more! Thanks to Alan and Karen, such welcoming and friendly hosts. Nothing ever too much trouble.
-
"Loved the cottage found the steps a bit much when having to unload the car but managed after that."
With the weather being so hot disappointed that we could not leave the dog in the cottage for a few hours. Being an older dog found going out in the car to much. Would never take a dog away if it damaged property.
-
"Excellent. We would definitely recommend Plum Tree Cottage."
Very relaxing stay in lovely surroundings. The cottage was clean, well equipt and in a good location. The owners were around if you needed them but did not intrude.
-
"Plum Tree Cottage was lovely and clean with everything we needed."
Lovely comfortable bed. A little difficult if you have any mobility problems as there are 17 steps and a ramp to transport all your belongings to the cottage from the car parking space. Our dog loved the private garden. Shower lovely and powerful but shower cubicle on the small side. Hard to move around in even though we are not large ourselves.
-
"We had an absolute 5 * experience and loved every minute at Plum Tree Cottage and it excedeed all expectations prior to arrival."
The photo's do not do this beautiful Cottage justice. Can't wait to return. On arrival we had a fantastic welcome pack including Coffee, Tea, sugar, yummy chocolate brownies and biscuits and a bowl of chocolates in the sitting room. There were also treats for our dog Bella, doggy towels, poo bags and fresh water awaiting our arrival for her. The cottage was spotlessly clean throughout and the shower was the best we have EVER had!! The location was perfect and our enclosed garden was beautiful and perfectly maintained and a pleasure to sit in of an evening after lots of busy day's of walking and visiting our favourite places. Just 2 minutes walk at the bottom of the garden was a stunning little train station which took us to Whitby for a few hours. My partner loved the bay window in the sitting room and spent lots of time looking at the birds and other wildlife. One highlight was watching the ducks come waddling across for food at breakfast time. I honestly can't praise Plum Tree Cottage enough. The only downside for some may be having no WiFi, but for me it was rather nice not having phone calls and messages.
-
"This was the 3rd time back at Plumb Tree."
Always nice and clean with everything you need. Very friendly owners that are always willing to chat. The village is great with a pub at the bottom of the garden and one 10 minutes walk away. Lovely café and a shop. We use the cottage as a base to travel round the area and to do some walking in the lovely countryside. We will at some point be booking it again.
-
"Beautiful property in a beautiful location."
Home from home. This is the best holiday home we have stayed in. There are beautiful walks from yards up the road , we didn't want to come home. Would definitely go back
-
"Fantastic quality property."
Beautiful location and great outlook. Felt comfortable from the moment we walked through the door. Even our dog was catered for with bag of dog biscuits waiting for him. Highly recommended
-
"The cottage was lovely."
They literally thought of everything. Sad we didn’t get chance to say hello to them but the gifts for us and the dog where really appreciated. Will book again.
-
"A lovely comfortable cottage with excellent decor and very well equipped."
Warm and comfortable. Our only problem was no phone signal and inadequate WiFi.
-
"Perfect accommodation!"
Welcoming and friendly hosts! Our second visit, certainly will not be our last!
-
"The shower is not very efficient."
Very poor water flow. The fitting of a pump may sort this issue? Otherwise, everything is amazing and we would love to visit again.
-
"Plumtree Cottage is perfect for us"
-
"This was our 8th stay at Plumtree Cottage."
Needless to say the cottage is perfect for us & our dog. Why change when we have found perfection, looking forward to going again in September.

Owners on hand if required for help and information. Close to village pub & shop. Lovely walks round and about. Will book again x
-
"A very comfortable and clean cottage."
Ideally placed for visiting both coast and countryside
-
"Really comfortable cottage, which is peaceful and private, located in a lovely area within easy reach of interesting places to visit."
There is also good secure bike storage. We did wish the cottage had Wifi so we could have checked the weather forecast!
-
"The garden is on many levels, not good for elderly dogs."
-
"Plumtree Cottage is perfect for us & our dog Holly."
We’ve got another 3 weeks booked for this year already. The location in Castletown is ideal for travelling. around the North Yorkshire Moors & Coastal resorts. Although the weather wasn’t the best this time it didn’t stop us from really enjoying our holiday. On a rainy day Plumtree Cottage is the perfect place to relax & read in comfort, roll on our next visit in July!
-
"It was everything it said on the tin"
-
"There was no DVD player that we could see however it is a lovely cottage with nice views of the owners lovely garden."
-
"This is the perfect place for a couple with a dog such as ourselves."
The cottage is beautiful and well appointed, everything is thought of. It is so comfortable and peaceful here. It is such a lovely place and near lots of great places to visit. There is an amazing deli in the village and lots of friendly local people. A perfect and relaxing break and we are hoping to go back.
-
"It would be good to include a photograph of the bathroom on your listing, there isn't one at present and I would have appreciated it thank you The cottage is lovely well situated for getting around and touring the area, the owner is very pleasant and had several chats with my hubby, we had a lovely stay."
The chocolates were an added bonus thank you
-
"This was our 6th time staying at Plumtree Cottage."
Plumtree Cottage is located on the edge of the moors & is in an ideal location for visiting many places within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park & the coast. Why look for another cottage when we have already found perfection!
-
"A most enjoying place."
Ideally situated. Will definitely return in future.
-
"Pity about the awful weather"
-
"We were very impressed with the accommodation."
Very nice decor and accessories. A home from home. Lovely to be able to take our dog with us. A very thoughtful addition from the hosts Alan and Karen, was a box of doggie things. Treats, poo bags and towels. Sadly the local pub was under renovation but that didn’t detract from our enjoyment of our break. We would definitely recommend this lovely property for a very quiet getaway from the rat race we live in. Thank you all
-
"Great cottage Good surroundings Handy for the coast Pleasant people"
-
"Perfect cottage in a great location."
-
"What can I say ?"
This was our 4th stay at Plumtree Cottage this year. We’ve found the perfect cottage for us & our dog Holly. Plumtree Cottage is perfect for us, comfortable, well equipped & in a perfect location for visiting the moors & the coast. Alan & Karen are the perfect hosts whilst not being intrusive, We’ve already started our bookings for next year.
-
"What can I say, this was our third stay at Plumtree Cottage and we have another booked for September."
Need I say more ? We've found our perfect cottage.
-
"Beautifully secluded property quiet and comfortable."
Centre of Yorkshire Moors with easy access to walking areas and the coast
-
"We had a wonderful stay at Plum Tree Cottage."
Beautifully decorated, spacious and impeccably maintained, the Cottage itself is stunning and had everything we needed for our week away. The owners are very helpful and always on hand, if you need anything. Castleton is a bustling village, well placed to explore North Yorkshire and the surrounding area, although it is worth noting that the nearest pub has now (very sadly) closed. Hopefully someone will take it over soon...
-
"Loved the station at the end of the garden."
Great base for exploring N.Yorks. Highly recommended.
-
"Set in a stunningly beautiful part of North York Moors."
Plenty of places to visit nearby.
-
"Everything we needed was at the cottage."
Very thoughtful welcome pack for the dog and biscuits for us. The cottage was excellently decorated with no expense spated with furnishings and bedding. A cliche I know, but we will return to Plum Tree Cottage! So much more to see....
-
"The cottage is beautiful, a credit to the owners, it is in a lovely setting, the garden outside the cottage is a haven for birds and an extremely friendly pheasant that we named Peter!"
Everything you could need is in the cottage. We would also recommend taking the train into Whitby, what a beautiful journey, along the river Esk, the train station is literally at the bottom of the garden. We will definitely return to Plum Tree Cottage.
-
"If you are not steady on your feet or in a wheelchair you will find it extremely difficult to get to the front door as there is steps and sloping path."
Also if you have a dog they aren't allowed in the park £1000 fine if caught, so not much in way of dog walking in village as its uphill I have copd and couldn't make it. The cottage is superb and has everything you need to have a lovely stay.
-
"Great cottage with a lovely secluded garden."
Looking out of the window watching the pheasants in the other garden was a treat they were very tame and friendly. Fantastic location with a lot of dog friendly places around. Hardly drove whilst we were here as everything we needed was close enough to walk with our cavalier king Charles spaniel. Definitely will be returning next year
-
"Plum Tree Cottage is delightful in every way."
It is in a lovely location, ideal for visiting the coast & the moors. The cottage is very comfortable & is well equipped. Karen & Alan are excellent hosts & have thought of everything needed, even providing dog treats for our dog Holly. This was our second stay at Plum Tree & we have already booked again for June - can't wait!
-
"A lovely cottage in a beautiful area very clean and well equipped unfortunately there is no control over the weather which was wet and windy when we were there."
The kitchen was quiet dark and would benefit from better lighting and a blind up the window as it is over looked by neighbors
-
"Booked this cottage quite late for a 4 night break at quite short notice."
Delighted with the standard of the accommodation and the owners feedback about local conditions (access outside of normal hours and a local road closure for example). The location is outstanding. Reading the guest book it seems everyone who has stayed here agrees!
-
"A really superb cottage in a great location."
Probably the best we have ever booked. Lovely owners, spotlessly clean cottage with everything you can need. A definite must visit again.
-
"The cottage was everything we hoped it would be and more."
It was located in a beautiful part of the country, the owners were very pleasant and all the little nice touches made it a wonderful break . There were treats left for our dog and we wanted for nothing in the cottage. Well worth a visit and hopefully we’ll book there again soon.
-
"The property is very small but beautifully presented."
There are loads of walk-books and visitor information provided by the owner which is extremely helpful. Whilst they permit dogs, the animal is not allowed in the one bedroom which restricts it to the lounge only! This may not suit all dog-owners.
-
"Plum Tree cottage is an absolute gem, perfect in every way and we will certainly book again."
-
"Very enjoyable this July 2018 also 1st Visit 4 Years ago loved the cottage, and the area Lovely seaside’s and villages, and the drive over the Moors fab!"
Owners friendly also left goodies for us and our dog on arrival - would highly recommend.
-

Great location. Fantastic value. Only downside no WiFi or phone signal.

Exceeded are expectations
-
"We had a brilliant stay in this lovely holiday cottage."
It was very clean and meticulously cared for. Everything that we needed was there and the owner was a lovely man who checked that we had everything we needed. We loved to watch the variety of birds in the garden and the owner made sure that the feeders were replenished every day. We would love to go back again when we are able to do so. The area is very nice with lots of places to visit. Thank you so much
-
"Cottage was well presented, clean and comfortable."
Nice touch to have pack of biscuits and blankets for the dog and an Easter Egg and shortbread for the humans. Would have been ideal to have Wi-Fi as there is no mobile signal at the cottage.
-
"Really enjoyed our stay at Plum tree cottage."
The cottage was warm and cosy and equipped with everything we needed. Extra touches such as chocolates, biscuits and a welcome pack for our dog which included towels, blankets and treats! the cottage is in a small remote village but there are 2 pubs within walking distance plus a coop and a train station at the bottom of the owners garden. It is a great base for exploring the North Yorkshire coast with the only downside being the lack of phone signal and wifi. All in all though it was one of the best cottages we have stayed in.
-
"Second time of staying at the plum tree cottage and it didn't let us down."
The cottage is great and the owner is very friendly. Plenty of walks around the cottage and loads to visit well worth the stay.
-
"The owners clearly take pride in presenting a spotlessly clean throughout, well equipped, comfortable and cosy holiday cottage."
We have stayed at lots of cottages but Plum Tree truly is exceptional.
-
"Excellent location, plenty of walks from the door, convenient for the Middlesborough to Whitby railway line, owner very friendly and helpful, this is a place for a peaceful and quiet holiday."
-
"Everything was great apart from lack of broadband and mobile phone signal,"
-
"Beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings, sorry to come home."
Best cottage we have used in past 10 years!

This cottage is a credit to the owners, They so clearly care about their guests as everything was first class & the little treats they left were appreciated , The cottage is in a lovely peaceful area as well
-
"A lovely short break taken at short notice, everything was just as we had wanted it."
A lovely area, the weather was kind to us and the people just fantastic.
-
"This cottage was excellent and had lots of little touches that made your stay very comfortable."
The standard of furnishings was 5* and the super king bed was a dream. Even though you were attached to the owners property you did not feel awkward or uneasy and Alan and Karen were around if you needed them but otherwise they left you to your own devices. This cottage was excellent for having a peaceful getaway from it all rest, but if you needed to have mobile phone coverage or internet access then this isn't the holiday for you.
-
"Plum Tree Cottage was one of the best cottages we have stayed in."
We can't understand why it doesn't have a higher rating. It is very warm, clean and comfy, well equipped. In a lovely area with many walks on the doorstep, also good location for visiting many other parts of the coast or the moors. Will definitely go again.
-
"Amazing cottage very comfortable with all you could want was like home from home top end of everything with some wonderful personal touches, spotlessly clean."
I would recommend Plum Tree Cottage to anyone, with one slight proviso access is a little awkward for anyone that has a mobility problem. Even my little dog was catered for with treats blankets and mat for her bowls all in all a wonderful place to stay.
-
"Having just spent a lovely week at Plum Tree Cottage, we wish to congratulate alan and Karen on getting it spot on."
Set in scenic and tranquil Castleton, Plum Tree Cottage nestles in the hillside (even sheep occasionally wander by!). Its actually a lovely 2 year old one level bungalow with all home comforts thought of. Plenty of crockery and cutlery, lovely bathroom plus torches and binoculars for bird watching at breakfast too. the sitting room is cosy in the evenings whilst the little garden catches the sun for tea and cake. Alan and Karen left us newspaper, milk, cookies and chocolate which was a nice touch. The location is ideal for visiting the many picturesque villages (once you’ve driven over the gorgeous moors) such as pickering, Helmsley, goathland. a visit to Whitby is a must too. we shall return to this wonderful home from home.
-
"Highly recommending staying at Plum Tree Cottage."
Perfect, relaxing, everything you needed in a cottage. Beautiful, peaceful location. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. Lovely walks on the doorstep, dog friendly pubs and shops. Highly recommend The Eskdale Inn, just down the road from the cottage. Lovely food and friendly staff.
