  • "Lovely cottage just outside Scarborough highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the area"

  • "We stay in a lot of cottages all over the UK and the first thing to say is that in our experience, this was in the main a very nice cottage."

It was well appointed inside with most of the things that you could want for a stay. The furnishing was mostly comfortable with plenty of space in the living areas. The mezzanine reading area was a nice feature. The cottage is very close to the main road which may not be ideal for everyone. We didn't like the kitchen seating so much, as plastic chairs, whatever the quality, are always uncomfortable, especially without seat pads. The bathroom was adequate in size although rather "closely" fitted and it is starting to show signs of wear that could do with attention. For example, the basin tap head was slightly loose and the short flush for the loo didn't work properly. The toilet was heavily stained, and is in desperate need of a descale at least. PLEASE... put a lock on the bathroom door. As friendly as guests may be, privacy in the bathroom is usually a priority for everyone. The shower worked fine if you like the style that you stand under. If you don't want wet hair then you have an issue. The alternate spray head was just hand held, with the bracket in a fixed position. That's not convenient to use and a bracket that can be adjusted directionally would be much better. The bedrooms were fine, with double beds being comfortable and good quality. The attic room has very low ceilings so mind your head. Wardrobe space is shared between rooms, which may not be for everyone, but hangers and coat pegs are also provided in the attic bedroom. The wardrobe is on the mezzanine floor. My biggest problem was with the very low hanging light fitting in the living room. If you are 5ft 2 in or below you are fine, any taller and this is a serious hazard. I'm over 6ft and have the bruises on my head from this light to prove it. Some people may consider this a health and safety issue for a rental property and in my view it should be removed or replaced. Sykes may like to address this with the owners. We didn't use the central heating so can't comment on that although the water was always hot. I did notice that there was no fuel provided for the wood burner although not needed by us. We were also disappointed at being requested in the cottage welcome book to remove bedding covers on departure. When I rent a cottage if I spill something I expect to hoover it up, however, I also expect changing bedding to be done by the cleaning crew as that's the service I pay for, not be part of that crew myself. 1 Church Cottage is lacking a visitor's book where others can make comments and recommendations on attractions or good eateries in the locality. Parking is tight but do-able if you back in away from the stone steps. A re-think of where the dustbins are kept is also needed, as not only are they in full view of the main living room windows of no 2 church cottages, but they also seem to be a convenient place for the local dog walkers to deposit their little plastic bags. ! The website photos that support this cottage need to be updated as several features have changed and are not completely as advertised in the photos. It's a nice village and convenient for exploring the coast either on foot or by car. There's also a good bus service for both Scarborough and Whitby if you don't want to get continually stung for parking fees. Local pubs were OK, better beer at the Red Lion . The Blacksmiths Arms does food but in my view it was just ok but unimaginative. Their beer was lacklustre and overpriced. There is a really nice Pub about a 45 minute walk up the "cinder track" . The Hayburn Wyke Inn. Nice beer garden. You can also visit the Hayburn Wyke waterfall about 20 mins walk away from the pub, if you are physically able and preferably before sampling the ale. Would we recommend this cottage and would we stay here again ? Yes definitely.

  • "We stayed Friday to Friday in early May and had a great time in this little cottage."

The kitchen had everything a self catering cottage could need. The living room is cosy with a really comfy sofa. The fire is a nice touch (and down the road is a tree surgeon who sells bags of wood for 10 pounds) and would make the room super cosy during the winter. The bedrooms are also cosy and pretty quiet considering the property is on the main road between Scarborough and Whitby. On that point its a really good position to get to lots of places. 15 minutes into Scarborough and about 20 minutes to Robin Hoods Bay (must see) and 30 minutes to Whitby. You can also walk to the coast from here. Its 1 mile roughly to the coastal path with views over the bay (can't get to the beach due to sheer cliffs but great views). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely look to book again should we decide to return to the area at any point.

  • "Lovely cottage very clean and very comfortabley furnished, enjoyed our stay we will be back."

only down side the centre flush on toilet decided to get stuck inside the larger flush button. The little court yard garden could do with some TLC.

Thank you for your feedback. Really glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. I only took ownership in early June and am still getting sorted with gardeners etc (I'm overseas working for a few months). Rest assured it is in hand and should be resolved in the next week or so for future bookings. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was amazing, couldn't wish for better."

However, the parking space was quite difficult because there were 4 large wheelie bins. Also the noise of the traffic was a bit disappointing. Very busy road, we didn't know the cottage was so close to it. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cloughton.

  • "This is a lovely cottage situated in a great location."

Perfect for accessing many of the beautiful beaches on the North Yorkshire Coast. The only negative for us was that although the advert states that pets are allowed, it should be clear that dogs are actually only allowed downstairs which means they’re confined to the kitchen and lounge. This was a problem for us as we have two very small dogs who are used to having free roam of our house and sleep in our bedroom.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed the cottage and the local area. The detail around where animals are permitted is noted and we will amend our description for future guests and would look forward to welcoming you again in the future! Property Owner
