  • "Second time we have stayed at Wethercote Cottage."

We had a lovely stay comfortable clean and tidy as it was last time. Great area for exploring Yorkshire at its best. We will definitely book again next year. Thank you!!

The view from the cottage was lovely. My partner and I enjoyed watching the hares playing in the field over the garden wall. The owners were friendly and welcoming.

  • "A lovely cottage in a semi-remote location, but with easy access to Helmsley & beyond."

On arrival the cottage was spotless but no welcoming tea & biscuits/cake, not an essential but always a nice touch. Facilities excellent especially in the kitchen department whilst WiFi was excellent [fast acting & strong signal]. Perhaps the only facility that caused concern was the shower over the bath which was an accident waiting to happen, there were no hand holds to assist getting in or especially, getting out, and anyone with short legs was in for a challenge. A small irritant was the 9.00am departure which when you only live 50 mile away seemed a little unnecessary. So much so that we wouldn't again book any cottage with Sykes with that sort of early departure time.

  • "This cottage was beautiful."

We were first in following a total refurbishment which has been tastefully done. Therefore We could not fault it. The owner and family were friendly and courteous. This is a very busy working farm so do expect there to be mud about the farm yard. They also have two dogs which are extremely friendly. We will be returning.

  • "The cottage was lovely."

Clean, nicely furnished and very well equipped. Even had cleaning materials and Tea towels so didn’t need ours in the end. The cottage was in a very isolated location but easy to access all the main sights of North Yorkshire. Everything was within an hours drive. Owners greeted us on arrival and were warm and welcoming when we saw them in the garden or around the farm but gave us plenty of privacy.

  • "We had a lovely time at Weathercote cottage."

The cottage was very very clean & comfortable. The owners of the farm were very nice and very helpful. There are fresh eggs available, which I recommend. If you need grocery shopping then Thirsk is not too far away and the same with Helmsley, but be warned it can be busy! We are frequent visitors to the area and like Whitby, Filey, Bridlington & Pickering with it's wonderful railway. I took quite a few photos during our stay at the cottage, but sadly there is no where to share visitors photographs here. Maybe a feature Sykes could add.

  • "The description doesn't do this cottage justice."

It's a perfect location for walking the Cleveland Way and visiting the gems that are dotted across the west of the North Yorkshire Moors all the way to the East Coast. The cottage itself is on a farm run by delightful and welcoming people who were very understanding about our pet number mix-up, and allowed us to take two dogs. If you're looking for 'away from it all' and spectacular views, this is the place to go. It's a very warm and comfortable cottage with every possible need covered. We tried very hard to think what else we might want, but could only come up with a second lavatory and a slotted spoon! There was even a collection of OS maps with walks highlighted. Helmsley is a few miles away and is a lovely little town which welcomes dogs in almost every shop and eatery, with 3 lovely pubs. The castle and it's surrounding area is well worth visiting, and the walk to Rivaulx is wonderful. The Abbey is another incredible site to visit. Going in the opposite direction from the cottage, the Cleveland Way has a good stopping point at East Paradise Farm's tea rooms which has fabulous home made cakes and serves savoury meals too. We can't wait to go back and have already booked to go in 4 months' time.

It was nice to be away from it all on the farm, and it was so nice and peaceful there. Great for walking with the Cleveland way very close by. It is also close to sutton bank with lots of good walks and the gliders to watch. We enjoyed our week there tremendously. The farm is situated in lovely open land not far from Helmsley. We were made very welcome by the owners and really enjoyed the proximity of chickens and the farm animals. The weather was so good that we mostly had our breakfasts on the bench on the lawn which was wonderful. I would heartily recommend the cottage. It is clean and comfortable and the owners are very welcoming and helpful.

  • "A lovely cottage set on a working farm, so there was the expected farm noises (could be kind of early!"

) but otherwise a really peaceful holiday. The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable, and contained everything we needed to self cater, not being great on eating out. We were there with our black labrador, who got on well with the resident dogs. I would note there is no secure garden (kind of obvious from the photos on the page) and we took a stake out and long line just in case, but mostly this wasn't needed, she stuck with us. The area around the cottage and North Yorkshire generally we found to be really dog friendly, which made the holiday for us.

The house was wonderfully warm and amazingly quiet with all the animals and machinery around. It is situated high up and we were very surprised to see all the snow! We would love to come back maybe in the spring or summer. From their visitors book we could see that lots of the visitors come back for another visit.

About the location

HELMSLEY

Kirkbymoorside 6 miles; Thirsk 14 miles; Pickering 13 miles; York 26 miles.

Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley is a prestigious market town with a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops. The area is important historically - Helmsley has its own 12th century castle and English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are close by. Helmsley also boasts an arts centre showing films and plays, and an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the summer. There is excellent walking on the doorstep - indeed the Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley - and the surrounding North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages are pretty in all seasons. York is less than an hour's drive south, as is Scarborough, Whitby and the east coast, whilst Pickering and the beginning of the famous steam railway line (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) are a little over 20 minutes' drive.
