It really is in the middle of nowhere but also not far from anything you might need. The accommodation is as promised on the booking and has everything you might need and things you didn't know you needed. The hot tub was well used whilst there as there was nothing better than lying in it and looking up at the Milky Way one night, snow the second night and rain the third night, all equally wonderful. The bed was wonderfully comfy and enough wood for the log burner to keep us warm when it got cold. Highly recommend this property and we will be back.

If you want to get away from it all then this is the place to go. We take a weeks worth of shopping and don’t really leave untill our holiday is over. I’m usually an early riser but some days i would not naturally wake up untill 11am. The bed is huge and comfy and the sheets are amazing. There is a snug where my partner would sit and read her book with a glass of wine while I went out to explore. We would definitely recommend heading to the end of the road then over the fence into the forest for a walk and enjoy the scenery. The owners are brilliant and will engage with you and if you want to be left alone they respect that too and give you your space. The best place we have stayed so far and hopefully in the future we will be back for a fourth time. If you are used to the city life and want to get away from it all then this is the place to go.

The hot tub was excellent, one of the best we’ve been in. The shower was very disappointing indeed, it was like a dribble, no pressure at all, took an age to shower properly. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable so much so we slept on the sofa all week reclined!! The study area is a waste of space, a decent spiral staircase and it could be used but it’s just a dangerous area to get to and from with no handrails. Half way through the holiday I was getting out of the hot tub, put the crocs on provided, the patio was wet with algae I slipped and went crashing straight down on my knee cap and shin, thee most immense pain. The rest of the holiday was very hard with a big lump and bruising..We wouldn’t go back and we felt it certainly wasn’t worth the money that we paid.

The barn is so cosy and has great facilities, the hot tub is just the icing on the cake and great for relaxing tired muscles. From walking out directly from the barn or exploring further afield to all that is on offer in Dalby Forest, the North Yorkshire railway line with its beautiful stations and steam trains and even to the seaside. That said, we find it difficult to leave the donkeys, sheep and chickens and are happy to just share their space, tranquility and remoteness. We feel amazing when we’re there and just the fact that we’ve booked again gives me a great sense of wellbeing. We would definitely recommend.

  • "Thompson Rigg Barn is exactly what we needed for our week away!"

The barn was larger than many we have visited, has everything we could have wished for (including a few games, which was great, as we forgot ours!) and is beautifully situated and presented, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by dark skies (we were mostly unlucky with cloud, but did see ISS, and a few stars), peace and quiet, and beautiful countryside. The drive in and out is an adventure (it is necessary to allow a good 20 minutes before any real roads are reached!) but, for us, this was part of its charm!! Our hosts were helpful, friendly and accommodating, and topped up the wood for the wonderful log-burner, whenever required! Our main company were sheep, donkeys (ever hopeful for apples!), hens, and many wild birds. Listening to the owls, while soaking in the hot-tub was the final touch - absolutely wonderful, thank you.

Our stay at this property totally surpassed all our expectations of how it would be. As soon as I stepped out of the car I felt all recent life stresses just melting away. The accommodation is thoughtfully designed and furnished to a high standard but the highlight of Thompson Rigg Barn is the setting and the opportunity to just simply 'be' away from everyday work and life. Our highlights were having an early breakfast up on the open moorland, observing the wildlife, being greeted each morning by Buddy and Huey (Hughie???) and each evening by the 'gang' of chickens and the stars. Our top recommendation is to save the hot tub for later in the evening and watch the best 'light show' ever as the stars literally pop out as you lay back and relax - I saw my first ever shooting star! We stayed local more of the time, used the car less and walked more, which is the whole point of staying there. Will need to come back not only because we’ve never been able to find the elusive Moorcock Inn open but there are many more walks to do, places to go and things to see. The dips in the hot tub after returning from walking helped rejuvenate us ready for the next walk. If we never left the Barn all week then we were regally entertained with the menagerie of animals both domestic and wild. George and Brad being the stars of the show though I think Alan and Helen might say different! • "This cottage was so cosy with lovely views."

The owners feed the birds so an abundance of bird species are right outside the window at all times of the day. We even saw a woodpecker visit a few times! The chickens, sheep and donkeys are a joy to watch and the owners left apples for us to feed them which was lovely. The private hot tub is amazing and is overlooking the beautiful views. The location is excellent with plenty of walks from the cottage and the lovely Thornton-le-Dale not far through the forest drive. I would definitely recommend this beautiful place and would love to return. The owners were very friendly and provided unlimited wood for the fire. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Nice little welcome hamper, added toiletries, bath robes for the Hot Tub which was great. The Barn is amazing, warm, comfortable and the kitchen is plenty big enough to cook meals. There is a slow cooker at the Barn (we took our own not knowing)and this is a fantastic touch as all the places we have stayed have never had that facility and a great thing to have after a long walk and soak in the hot tub. The Donkeys are great and love being pampered with carrots and apples :) We were a little worried when we received the instructions on how to navigate BUT honestly they are spot on cannot go wrong at all. Netflix on the TV and speedy WIFI but you are away so put that phone away and enjoy the countryside. We bought local produce from the farm further down with an honest box, beautiful cakes. Cant wait to return and totally switch off again, enjoy xx

They had a variety of food available to purchase, and even offered to go into town and get some alternatives for us if we wanted them to. They also provided tea, local coffee, biscuits, a bottle of prosecco and a local beer. The location was brilliant. It's nestled just outside Dalby forest, so you do have to drive through (or around) the forest to get to the beaches and nearby attractions. There's little phone signal but wifi was provided and worked well. The area is very peaceful and we didn't see anyone else on the road to the property all week. The location has plenty of wildlife to see. There's free ranging chickens and guinea fowl, sheep and donkeys too, all of which can be fed if you desire. There was also a lot of wild birds to see on the feeders by the hot tub. Definitely recommend this property.

The barn was exactly as the pictures showed but also had such a warm and comfortable feel to it. There are lovely touches to the barn that show the owners have gone the extra mile. The hot tub was such a dream, especially as there is no light pollution here so you can see all the stars at night. The barn has a log burner which heated the place within 20 minutes or so. The owners kindly filled up the log store outside without us even asking. There are lovely walks around this area if you want to venture out. This barn is quite remote and the roads surrounding it are quite rural so give enough time to arrive before it is dark so you can handle the terrain (quite bumpy). There is no phone service or sat nav signal so the pictures/map instructions the owners gave us were a great help and we found the barn no problem. Make sure you do your food shop before you arrive as the nearest shops are a fair drive away. If you’ve forgotten anything then the owners are great in helping you if they can. • "It was a real privilege to spend a week at Thompson Rigg Barn."

The location and the barn itself were everything that were publicised and more. After a warm welcome from Helen and Alan, the owners ,the barn very quickly felt like home and soon developed into an oasis of calm, far away from the world, where we could recharge our batteries. The owners are to be congratulated in the thought and effort put into developing the barn with the simple and effective use of the natural palette of colours and materials used in complimenting the natural stone as well as the excellent facilities on offer. If we were to give constructive feedback with regard to the facilities we would like to make three suggestions: 1) Somewhere, other than the shower room, to store wet and muddy outdoor clothing. 2) A cover e.g. gazebo over the hot tub would allow it to be used in all weathers. 3) Easier access to hanging space and more drawer space for clothes would really have been appreciated. We enjoyed using the barn for a number of lazy days but also as a base to travel and visit friends and places of interest. We truly knew that Autumn was upon us as the colours, shades, tones and hues of the trees and plants were developing at an amazing rate; we witnessed changes in just the few days of our time there. On one tree we could see such a range and it was incredible to realise that in a very short time just weeks away, that all the deciduous trees would be bare. As well as the tantalizing sights we were also tantalized by the evocative smells of wood smoke, the chemicals used in the hot tub, the sea and the pine forest. The tastes of home made and locally sourced pickled onions, damson jam, crab coleslaw, beef sandwiches with gravy and of course, Yorkshire Parkin were just some of the culinary delights that we savoured. The sound of crashing waves upon the shore at Whitby, the constant rippling of the stream adjacent to the cottage, the caw of the crows, compared to the lilt of the robins, chaffinches, blue tits and sparrows, the bleating of the sheep and the crackling of the log burner were as instruments in an orchestra, punctuated by the sound of silence that gave our holiday a spiritual quality. Our week was truly a week of bliss, just the two of us together. We didn't want to go home and return to reality. Be left in no doubt, we shall be back. In fact our next booking is only a phone call away.

We have been in the process of repairing the lane and have just spent £4,000 on resurfacing. It is still and always will be a stone track but all except the lowest of sports cars should be absolutely fine. There is a coat and boot store outside the main door, it is also used to store sufficient logs so it may not have been obvious. We did however forget to put in the hooks, which are being done now. There is a large walk in wardrobe with full length rail and hangers and a full length shelf in the hallway with a set of drawers and shoe rack which are moveable to enable guests to shift things around to suit themselves so I am unsure as to what is meant by this point. We are looking at alternative bedside furniture with drawers so maybe that would help. We have considered a covering for the hot tub, but a gazebo would not necessarily work due to the size and location. It would have to be large enough and of sufficient quality not to blow away.or stand out in the National Park. But then it would need to be permanent, thus anyone wishing to take in the evening moonlight, meteor showers and milky way would not have any view. Its a difficult one especially since that particular week I think it rained non-stop, which is fairly unusual. We will look into the issue as we feel if we can find a suitable solution without affecting the look or requiring planning it would be a good idea. Incidentally the same issues are to be said for a parasol Property Owner

Sitting on the front and back patios is a pleasure with the sun changing aspect from morning to evening.
