  • "The only issue my family discussed was the beds are on the firm side, as we are used to very soft mattresses, other than that impeccable, the locals are super friendly, cottage is very modern and clean, and the hot tub a bonus after all the walking we were doing."

Would defo recommend for upto 4 people

  • "Got off to a rocky start when there was no water in the hot tub and boiler wasn’t working so no heating or hot water."

Quick call to Sykes and a man was there filling the hot tub very quickly but then we had to wait for it to warm up so couldn’t go in it the first night. The boiler had no pressure so I watched a YouTube video to see if I could top it up. Boiler kicked in and all was well. Had a lovely few days relaxing in the hot tub, visiting the local beaches and eating out. Neighbours very friendly and the dogs enjoyed it too.

  • "On first appearances Lavender cottage is lovely with nice furnishings, modern kitchen and bathrooms and a hot tub."

BUT, then we had a few problems which reading previous guests comments they also did and sadly they weren't rectified before our stay. The tv has no signal so you can only access apps or catch up if you can log in with your own account. The toaster tripped all the electrics, we only found the fuse box by chatting to the neighbors. The boiler was switched off so we had no heating to dry towels on the heated rails. The hot tub was set on the lowest temperature and couldn't be altered so it wasn't warm enough. There was no mirror or storage in the second bedroom (only a small bedside drawer unit). Plus unfortunately the rear garden was like a building site, clearly work in progress. We did try contacting the housekeeper who I received a text from on the day we arrived saying to contact her if we had any problems. I did this on day 2 and again on day 4 but both times had no response back. On day 5 I got in touch with Sykes direct who did get in touch with her and she rang me whilst we were on our way home. (We left a day early as we were so disappointed with our holiday). Apparently she was out of the country and didn't receive my messages! Why then did I receive hers on day 1 saying she was first point if contact! Hopefully now the issues will be delt with (too late for us but for future guests). With the help from Sykes the owners have gone some way to compensate us for this. We have stayed in many self catering cottages and have to say this is the first one we have had any issues with. Sykes are usually very good with their descriptions and ratings. Lavender cottage has the potential to be a lovely holiday let with the hot tub and beautiful garden for Al fresco dining/kids play area when it's finished. On a positive note, the neighbors are lovely, very friendly and helpful. There are some lovely places to visit and we did a couple of good walks from the cottage. We would recommend Mad Alices bar for drinks and also Kascane Cafe was very reasonable for food and drinks.

Hello, We are sorry to hear you found your stay disappointing. The issue with the TV was an issue in the area and has now been rectified. We have all new Smart TVs in the property. The other issues have also now been addressed. Steven Pritchard Property Owner

  • "I am very disappointed with my recent booking for a much needed week away with my mother."

The details on Sykes website itself was very limited and it was the same at the cottage. There were no instructions on the appliances including the tv which had no channels and we found out that we needed to set up accounts on my phone to access bbc and itv player so we could watch it but not access to live tv. Which was upsetting as we wanted to see news of the queens passing. The cottage had a damp musty smell which never went away. The lounge furniture was not very clean the cushions stank so obviously not cleaned at change over day. My mum had the main bedroom and I took the smaller bedroom which had no wardrobe for clothes or mirror and the description said plenty of storage in bedrooms! The only cupboard in the small bedroom has the boiler in it which came on about 4 /5 times in early hours so I had no sleep for the first few nights. I told the housekeeping lady this bit she did not get back to me until I chased her up on this after night 4! The boiler had to be turned off. We lost a day of our holiday as the toaster tripped all the electric one morning so again had to wait on the housekeeper to tell us where the box was to get it all back on. Even though this was mentioned by someone else in the guest book. There was a remote control which looked like a stereo but no stereo to be seen in the cottage again I asked the housekeeping contact about this but no response. On speaking to the neighbours we found out that previous people staying at the cottage had the same issues with the TV and the toaster tripping off the electric. When I mentioned all my issues to Sykes they just said they would not be issuing any money back as we had not allowed them to rectify the problems! How they were going to change the boiler/ tv/ electric in a week is beyond me. I feel Sykes need to do more to make sure that issues raised by previous people staying should be rectified before next booking. We left a day early as could not face another night and didn’t see the point as our relaxing break was ruined anyway. I will never be booking with Sykes again. What a waste of money.

Hello, We are sorry to hear your stay was disappointing. The issue with the live TV was a problem in the area and has now been sorted out. We apologise you did not get answers from the housekeeper, this has been addressed. Issues have also been reported to our cleaning team and they will be improving this in the future. The village of Loftus lies 14 miles north of Whitby on the east coast of Yorkshire. Originally an old alum mining village, it comprises terraced houses, old stone cottages and a few grand stone dwellings. The long and lively main street hosts a variety of shops, eateries, pubs, banks and an impressive town hall. Lying behind the main street is a leisure centre with an excellent swimming pool. Loftus is well placed for discovering the small coastal villages of Runswick Bay and Staithes, the latter being a popular choice for artists.
