  • "Had a fantastic Xmas break at Maris Cottage."

Everything you could need was in the house. Beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for everyone. Would definitely recommend and we would return without hesitation. Only one issue and that was parking as there wasn’t always space but this did not and will not deter us.

  • "Lovely call from the owner Mairi before our holiday began just to check in with arrival instructions."

The house itself is beautiful and had everything we needed and was lovely and clean on arrival. Plenty of space in the bedrooms for all 7 of us and lovely big dining table which we used a lot! 2nd visit to the Bay and we love the area and will happily visit again.

  • "We stayed at Maris cottage to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday as a family."

The cottage layout suited us well, with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom which was ideal for my mum and upstairs bedrooms and bathroom for the rest of us. The kitchen was well equipped with all the pans and utensils we needed. Maria contacted us prior to the holiday to confirm bed configurations and arranged for flowers for mum’s birthday to be in the cottage when we arrived which was very kind and much appreciated. We would recommend the cottage for anyone celebrating a similar occasion. John

  • "Few minor points to make the property even better."

.. Would be good to have a bath/shower mat provided so towels didn't have to be used for the floor. The hoover at the property smelt of wet dog, so may need a deep clean or replacing. Had lots of fly's in the property, could be worth investing in a fly catcher device.

Thank you for your comments. We’re glad that on the whole your stay at Maris Cottage was enjoyable. These points have been addressed with immediate effect, in particular there should be shower mats in each bathroom. Guests are always introduced to the owner and encouraged to get in touch if anything is needed - and we’re always very responsive. Best wishes, Mairi Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week at Maris House, the location is fantastic for visiting Filey, Bridlington and Scarborough."

The Bay is nice and quiet and we had no trouble parking. The house was lovely but could do with some maintenance in several places and there were areas which weren't cleaned very well before our arrival. We had a small problem with the kettle but the issue was dealt with quickly once I contacted Mairi the owner and I felt like if we had had any other problems they would have been solved quickly. Jigsaws and games were provided in case of rainy days and TV's in all bedrooms was welcome. The beds were very comfortable and we felt at home there for the week, we would definitely return.

The only disappointment was that the swimming pool on site was warm for the first day and then freezing cold after that. The children wouldn’t go in it was so cold and there didn’t seem to be much happening to make it better!

It is in need of a refurb. Parking is a free for all.

We have been in contact with the guest to understand the reason for her comments and agree the cleaning on this occasion was not up to the high standard we expect. Significant action has been taken to ensure this is not repeated and the guest has acknowledged she is satisfied her concerns have been heard. We always respond immediately if anything is brought to our attention, generally receive positive feedback and have many repeat bookings. Property Owner

  • "We had a really enjoyable stay."

An initial issue on arrival was the fact the garden is not secure but we resolved that with a long line to keep our pup on outside. The listing doesn’t say secure garden but I had assumed as the cottage was dog friendly then the garden would be too. Our only other concern was that my mum struggled getting in and out of the patio doors due to mobility issues as she found the step high and the front door path was too uneven for her. Other than that the cottage was great for our needs and we would happily return.

Spent our first day cleaning. Despite cleaning the smell in the place was hard to shift. The furniture was tired and pouffe in the lounge torn and shabby. The carpets were stained and overall the house needed talc as well as a good clean. This is also documented in the visitors book. It really annoyed me that poor cleanliness is clearly an ongoing issue that has not been addressed. Very annoyed that you continue to promote this house despite negative previous feedback. The sofa cushions are very shabby and the radiator valves downstairs don't work--we couldn't turn them off. The blinds downstairs had no chords so were difficult to raise. There is nowhere to put shower gel in the ensuite and no bathmat there. Only one toilet brush for three lavatories and no spare loo rolls. The ones that were there were half used. There were only two teaspoons. Minor details which are easily fixed. That said, it was well equipped and attractive and we enjoyed our time there

About the location

FILEY

Scarborough 7.7 miles; Bridlington 10.5 miles.

Set in the magnificent Filey Bay, Filey is a traditional English seaside resort with a friendly atmosphere, offering a restful holiday, making it an ideal place to stay for walkers and wildlife watchers at any time of the year. Filey Brigg is a low headland that protects Filey Bay and provides good bird watching and seawatching opportunities all year round. The 400 ft high Bempton Cliffs (RSPB Reserve) to the south of Filey Bay are home to over 250,000 seabirds in the summer. The town itself seems almost caught in a time warp, retaining much of its character with individual shops, narrow paths and ginnels and there is a slipway where local fishermen keep their boats, plus delightful beach chalets that can be hired through the summer months. The bay is edged with two promenades and there are various gardens, where brass bands play on a Sunday afternoon. This small town is family orientated and there are loads of family activities such as Alpamare UK waterpark, Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park and the Filey Dams Nature Reserve, a wetland reserve where all kinds of common and rare birdlife can be seen. A short drive brings you to the busier town of Scarborough where you will find great beaches, a castle, the Rotunda Museum and the acclaimed Sea Life Centre. Other towns worth visiting close to Filey include Bridlington, Whitby, Hornsea and Saltburn, which all demonstrate the vibrancy of this picturesque North Yorkshire region.
