  • "We arrived to a very warm welcome from Geoff."

The property was so warm and cozy. Spacious throughout, spotless, each bedroom with its own on suite. Furnishings were lovely, well stocked kitchen with crockery, glassware and cutlery .We had read in previous reviews that the property was not decorated for Christmas so brought along our own tree, lots of games, video's and jigsaws , No wi fi but that was stated clearly on the information. so no worries there. All the family loved it, so much to do in the surrounding area. . Would recommend for a family get together The property sleeps 6 . My husband and I, my sister from the states and an Aunt . Daughter and her husband, who swopped halfway through with our other daughter and her husband. A perfect Christmas break. Many Thanks

  • "We’ve stayed at Sykes cottages many times, this corkage was not of the standard of others so I’m unsure how Sykes work out their ratings."

We chose this cottage as my mum can’t manage stairs so had the downstairs bedroom. This only has a bath which she couldn’t use. It would have made more sense to have a shower with this room to suit a disabled person. It was a good location for exploring by car, but too remote to go anywhere on foot. Main B road at end of the long drive had no footpaths, Stamford Bridge about 1.5 miles away. Property was adequate for our needs. Not as well equipped as others we have stayed in. As it sleeps 6 I’d expect to find at least 6 of everything in the kitchen, but I think there have been some loses over the years that haven’t been replaced. Tea towels, dishwasher tabs & toilet rolls etc were all available. Hand towels in the bathrooms would be appreciated as once we’d packed to leave we had nothing to dry hands on. Our phone’s data allowances saw us through for internet access which is often needed on holiday to book tickets etc. we were glad there was good signal after reading no WiFi at the property. Beds are not very comfy (hard) and pillows as flat as pancakes! No spares in the wardrobes. No trouser hangers either amongst the collection of free plastic shop hangers!. That made the place feel cheap! Upstairs bedrooms are compact & don’t have much, if any windows to the outside, so can feel stuffy. No fans provided, glad we weren’t staying in very hot weather. Generally clean, some dusty spots where you can’t see!

  • "Although this was a lovely cottage, in a quiet peaceful rural location we missed being connected to WIFI ."

Whilst this was made clear in the booking information and didn't impact hugely on our enjoyment nearly all cottages do include it these days. Having en suite in every bedroom was very good although the inclusion of an overhead shower over the bath would have been even nicer.

  • "The Cart Shed is a delightful property with quirky design features."

The facilities provided were excellent, but the absence of provided towels and WiFi drops it below our Sykes average expectations. The arrival and departure times were a surprise. (Arrive after 4:30 and leave before 9:30) When I contacted the owners about keys I was told any time after 2:00pm for arrival.

  • "A well-appointed and comfortable property, which was clean and well looked after."

Situated near both a small town, and not too far from a city, it was easy to get to a range of facilities. We were disappointed that the house wasn't remotely decorated for Christmas, even though we asked in advance. It also lacked the usual basics such as a carton of milk, that owners traditionally leave for arriving guests. Admittedly, these are fairly minor quibbles, but do show an owner who is willing to go the extra mile for their guests; a complete lack of WiFi was annoying too. The house was very warm, and the furnishings comfortable; a small grassed area behind the property was useful for entertaining the kids. Overall, this is a good property, and we had an enjoyable stay.

Everything you could possibly need. Warm, comfortable, spotlessly clean and well presented. No Wi-Fi but we personally found this refreshing. • "The owners were friendly and welcoming."

There are no towels in the property, which isn't really a problem as we drove but it should be in the listing - the owners do call you to let you know, but if I'd been on the train as I sometimes have been I'd have lost a lot of luggage space. I had to clean the sides and use a dustpan when we got there as it wasn't quite clean but it wasn't horrific. Very good tumble dryer, and lovely beams in the house. The area is nice and York is about a twenty minute drive away (it's close, but there's traffic). We enjoyed our stay and overall the issues were minor.

A very well equipped a comfortable house with the benefit of three separate bathrooms. Surrounded by fields and near to Stamford Bridge, it’s a great location to suit all. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay from my parents on their 80s to our 3 year old spaniel! We can’t understand the people that complain about the lack of WiFi. It makes that clear in the list of amenities and we enjoyed some time off the grid! Thoroughly recommend.

  • "How about NO HOT WATER AT ALL for a three night stay!"

We found that there was no hot water early on our first morning (Friday) and informed the owner of the property at a civilised hour - 9.30. As we were on our way out for the day, we ensured that the owner had access to the cottage and he assured us that he would look into the problem. On our return at approximately 16.30, we found that there was still no hot water. We immediately contacted the owner and he was adamant that there was hot water. We asked him to attend the property and he was forced to admit that indeed there was no hot water. He then informed us that he could not get a heating engineer to look into the problem until Monday. There were six of us in the property for the weekend and to have no hot water was beyond a joke. The owner offered to let us use the shower in his house but under no circumstance was this practical. We finished up either using kettles of hot water or using a stone cold shower -- it was only mid December! We are interested to establish as to what compensation we will receive as you ( Note 1) were unable to provide the most basic of facilities i.e. hot water Note 1 The contract was with Sykes, not the owner of the property. It was ideal for 5 adults with the 3 en-suite bathrooms and plenty of hot water for everyone to shower in the mornings. The two single beds are 2'6" wide and seemed a bit narrow at first, but we adapted to them. The cottage is very well located for using the park and ride into York which we used over 4 days. We had pre-booked afternoon tea at Betty's for 1pm, which was an ideal time, as it meant we were able to eat all that was on offer (it was a large tea with canapes, sandwiches, scones and cakes - and of course plenty of your chosen tea to drink). The National Railway Museum and Castle Museum were well worth visiting and just wandering around the ancient city walls of York was interesting. The younger members of our party found the range of shops very good in the city, with a number of individual shops not found on the average high street. A visit to Roly's Fudge shop was not to be missed. We visited both Whitby and Scarborough as they were just over an hour's drive away. The week passed all too quickly and there were still plenty to do in York that we had not managed to visit. We had a lovely meal at the Vintage Inn in Stamford Bridge and utilised both the Chinese and Pizza takeaways. Overall a great holiday home and we would not hesitate to return.
