  • "Chimes Cottage is very cosy and a great place to stay."

It is just off the main road, which was a nice surprise. By coming in (just) after 6 p.m. each day, you can then pick up up a free 2 hour parking ticket, by pressing the green button, which means you do not have to go out until 10.00a.m. We got a space each time with little problem. Apart from a washing machine (no big hindrance), everything else was there. Coffee, tea and milk provided as a starter. The is a lovely little back yard and whilst the chiming of the church clock every 15 minutes is enchanting, it is very thoughtful of the ‘locals’ that there is no chiming after 10.00p.m. until 7a.m. Chimes Cottage is comfortable, good value for money and in excellent location for a lot of Yorkshire… though Redcar is quiet and friendly, with a fantastic beach from there through to Saltburn - where the cliffs begin!

  • "Great cottage close to the coast and a brilliant town with plenty of shops and eating places."

Cottage was fantastic, very clean and everything we needed. Only downfall was the car parking, the small square car park directly outside the cottage is only a short stay metered car park so can only get two hours per ticket and the permit provided gives you street parking around the corner on the Main Street near the fish shop, but there are never any spaces so had to go to the long stay car park which is a good walk away and the all day tickets only cover you for the day of purchase so was having to get up early every morning to go round for 8 in the morning to buy another all day ticket for it. Spaces are also very limited so a bit of back and forth between short stay and long stay till you eventually get a space. Cost a fortune in parking due to this. The price for all day parking on Sykes is also wrong and needs updating, it’s over double what they say. Other than the parking issues it’s a fantastic cottage and would go again.

Hi Mark Sorry to hear you had issues with the parking. However the short stay park outside is free from 6pm until 8am so you can usually use the free 2 hour parking to your advantage. Arrive home from a day out and pop 2 hours free ticket on then after 6pm it's free parking until 8am, then all you need to do is get up at 8am pop another free 2 hours on whilst you get ready, most people go out for the day or if you are spending the day in Guisborough the road for the permit is quite through the day. Hope this helps if you stay again Thanks for your feedback and I will make sure this is clearly explained in the visitors book Property Owner

Clean, warm and well maintained, location for us was just right, if you want cosy, clean and central with the Abby bells just across the car park yet so quiet in the evening you could not find a better place for you and your dog. The bed was so comfortable and the owner so accommodating, if you needed her she would be there in minutes. I cannot recommend Chimes cottage enough. We would stay again.

It exceeded our expectations! The cottage even had a Christmas tree and lots of decorations which made it feel extra special and homely this time of year. It was perfectly situated close to everywhere we wanted to visit - Saltburn, Yarm, Codbeck, Roseberry Topping etc and it was only about an hour’s drive to York! We highly recommend this place, thanks Jeanette.

  • "The property was very nice and warm very clean, however the parking was a major problem, only being allowed to stay for 2 hours, to use the permit you had to be luck if you managed to get a space on the main road."

Hi Michael I'm sorry to hear you had issues with the parking and hope this didn't affect your stay. The car park does offer 2 hours free parking however it is free from 6pm until 8am and free on Sundays therefore most people tend to arrive back after a day out and get a free ticket which would last until the free period effectively giving you free parking from 4pm until 8am the next day. We do have a visitors permit offering free parking and there is also a long stay car park situated around the corner a 2 minute walk giving you 24 hour parking for £4. Thanks for bringing it to my attention , I will write the information with a clear explanation in the visitors book so other guests are aware of all the parking options Thanks Jeanette Property Owner

  • "The cottage was small but cozy, low ceilings upstairs."

The bed squeaked every time you turned over. The noise from the church, road and people was a nightmare. The location was excellent. No welcome pack not even a toilet roll.

Hi Darren I am dissapointed to hear about your feedback of chimes cottage. I pride myself in trying to make every guests stay as comfortable as possible and I'm sorry to hear of the issues you encountered. However we do provide wine, chocolates, tea, coffee, milk, toiletries and cleaning materials as a welcome pack, I can only apologise if their was no toilet roll provided this must have been an oversight on the cleaner, as for the bed if you had let me know I could have called down and tightened this, most of our other guests actually say it is such a comfortable bed, I do state if you have any issues to contact me and I will pop down both verbally and in the visitors book, both these issues were a simple fix and could have been dealt with immediately rather than wait until after your stay to inform me in your feedback which then gives me no chance to rectify. As for the ceilings unfortunately chimes cottage is a grade 2 listed building, it is a small quirky cottage built in the 1700 , all cottages of this type are built in a similar way and have low ceilings which I am unable to do anything about. Chimes is aptly named and states that it is next to St Nicholas historic Church and priory in the information before booking, unfortunately again I am not able to do anything about the proximity of the church. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday and I will rectify the issues now that I am aware of them Regards Jeanette Property Owner

  • "Chimes cottage is perfect!"

It's so cosy, I could move in tomorrow. Perfect for two people. We arrived to some welcome gifts (wine, chocolate and a pet toy and treats!) and the cottage is supplied with all the essentials - washing up liquid, towels, even milk. The bed is super comfy, we slept very well. We were worried about being kept awake by the church clock chiming but it stops ringing at 10pm until 7am so not a problem at all. Parking wasn't an issue - we managed to get parked on the main road with the permit. There was a live band playing across the road on Friday night but it stopped just before 11pm. Guisborough is a great location, we loved being near the Priory and there are supermarkets not far away for essentials. The owner is really helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend and stay again!

Having an evening with the wood burner going was a perfect end to the day. The only problem was the bed was so comfortable I had to force myself to get up and out. There was one unfortunate mishap where a pipe had split and certainly was not the owner’s fault. It was dealt with so promptly and efficiently I never had to worry. I would go back without hesitation.

The only problem for us the week we were there was the parking. We were ok in the car park outside the cottage during the night but had to move it by 10.00am. The parking warden was vigilant so we had to move to the pay and display £4.00 for the day.

Hi I'm sorry to hear you had issues with the parking but we do have a parking permit that gives you free parking for the road running alongside. This is a visitors parking permit that you are able to use anytime. I hope this did not affect your stay Thank you for your feedback Jeanette Property Owner

  • "Chimes Cottage is a lovely little cottage in the heart of Guisborough, superbly situated adjacent to the priory and close to all the amenities of the town."

Whilst the write up of the cottage was extremely accurate we did nevertheless find some of the facilities slightly challenging - namely the roll top bath with hand-held shower which provided some comical rather than romantic moments when it came to climbing in and out and trying to get our hair washed without getting the floor wet through. Also the very small wardrobe which was more suitable for a child and was really quite inappropriate considering there were no suitable sized drawers to put anything in. The bedroom could easily have fitted a full sized wardrobe fitted alongside the right hand wall. Having said this, we did really enjoy our stay here - we couldn’t fault it’s cleanliness and the bed was very comfortable. The surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful being on the edge of the moors and close to the coast, and we found some spectacular walks. Climbing Roseberry Topping was a highlight - the views from the top are simply spectacular - also the Rail Trail from Gromont to Goathland, and many walks from the Moors Centre at Danby over the moors and around the Esk Valley kept us busy. We would certainly return to this area and would recommend this cottage.

  • "A nice little cottage that was clean and tidy on arrival."

It is ideally located for walks, the town centre shops and bars (a vibrant bar being across the road). The bathroom was lovely, although my husband found the width of bath restricting - broad shoulders. There is a hand held shower but no shower curtain so much care is required should you use it. Only 1 bath sheet was provided so take your own unless you prefer smaller towels. As a previous visitor stated the bedroom is quaint but the small cupboard “dolls house wardrobe “ is not fit for hanging clothes such as dresses or skirts. The bedside table drawers were too small for anything larger than socks or underwear. The kitchen / living room area has most things you need to stay for a few days. There are fold away tables that can be placed by the sofa should you choose to dine in. Unfortunately, there is no where to dry wet coats and clothes should you have bad weather. Overall, our biggest disappointment was the fact that the cottage is adjacent to the busy main road and directly in front of the cottage is an extremely busy car park. I realise the owner has no control over this but the noise of car doors/ boots slamming and the traffic was horrendous. During our stay, we visited Saltburn-By-The-Sea, Marske, Staithes and Runswick Bay and would recommend all of them. If you are travelling with a dog, there are some lovely trails in Guisborough forest which can easily be reached from the cottage.

The owner has a great eye for detail and the cottage is finished to a very high standard throughout. For a couple on a romantic break together this is perfect. The location is well placed for exploring the North Eastern part the North York Moors. The cottage being located in the busy market town of Guisborough was really useful, there are lots of pubs, cafe's and restaurants in the town and the usual supermarkets all in easy walking distance. Across from the cottage is the parish church, please note that when we stayed in 2020 the clock in the church tower did not chime. Hence no disturbance for light sleepers like me. The only item of note is that there is limited parking around the cottage. It was never a problem. The cottage handbook explains all the parking options. The handbook is one of the best we have seen by a long way. Not all cottages are as good as this one. Well done to the owners.

About the location

GUISBOROUGH

Saltburn-by-the-Sea 6 miles; Staithes 13 miles; Whitby 21 miles.

Guisborough is an attractive market town set in rural surroundings on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Steeped in history, Guisborough is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the town's most notable feature is the beautiful ruined abbey, Gisborough Priory; standing in full glory, to its original height of 97 feet, the dramatic gothic east gable towers high over the market town and has become a well-known icon of the town. This bustling small town has twice-weekly market days, a good selection of eateries, excellent pubs and many independent shops. Around Guisborough sits the spectacular woodland of Guisborough Forest. Guisborough Forest & Walkway is situated in Pinchinthorpe on the outskirts of Guisborough at the northern end of the A173. It extends for 2.5 miles along part of the route followed by the old Guisborough Branch Railway line, heading west towards Nunthorpe, and east to Guisborough Forest, which is managed by Forest Enterprise. It is a gateway site to the North York Moors National Park and offers splendid views of Roseberry Topping to the south. Points of local interest include Highcliff Nab and Hanging Stone. Captain Cook 92s Monument is also within walking distance. The Cleveland Way and the Tees Link walks pass through Guisborough Forest, and are just two of the many walking routes easily accessible to visitors. This super country park has cycle trails, walking routes, bridleways, a trim trail and an easier sculpture trail. The park includes the Guisborough Walkway which runs along the former trackbed of the Middlesbrough to Whitby railway line. This includes a wetland area with boardwalks, woodlands and grasslands. You can also climb Highcliff Nab for fabulous views of Teeside and the coast. The park is also very popular with mountain bikers with a number of super trails to explore. There is an excellent visitor centre with full details of all the trails in the park. The long distant trail of the Cleveland Way passes close by, whilst nearby Roseberry Topping is well worth the climb to take in the spectacular views. An easy thirty minute drive brings you to the Heritage Coastline, with historic villages and resorts, including Staithes, Saltburn and Whitby to enjoy.
