  • "This was probably the best small cottage I've ever stayed in as a solo weekend breaker, who spends their time hiding away from a busy life and writing."

Whilst it's only a studio, it was spacious enough not to feel tight, and the tiny kitchen was better equipped than others I've experienced. One of my biggest hopes is always silence/minimum noise and again this was perfect. The highland cows made no trouble, and whilst I was aware that the unit next door was also in use, I never heard them through the walls, so good soundproofing? It felt like the owner had put great thought into the entire layout of creating this space, with many of the sockets even including USB ports. I think literally the only 'issue' I had was the shower. There was a big rain head and a smaller one attached to the pole and I could not figure out how to switch the flow from the smaller one to the large. It wasn't really a problem so I didn't call on the owner, but rather a 'huh' moment. Oh, and the drive entry is tight. I was relieved my car wasn't bigger as my sensors were going mad as I very carefully had to manoeuvre out (not so much going in?). This met my needs perfectly, though maybe it needs to be more clear that 'privacy' outside isn't what I'd class as private. You have your own dedicated parking space and picnic bench, but the neighbouring unit does also and only a low fence separates you. If both parties wanted to dine outside, you'd be just metres away more like in a pub garden. Not private-private. But I'd definitely book this again.

  • "Great accommodation but the accuracy of the description by Sykes disputed."

We chose this lodge to be walking distance to a pub. NOT 2 minutes but 10. Also 15 minutes to the shop and bus route. So unless the car is used there is no access to anything if you are disabled. Correct your facts Sykes James the owner is so obligingly helpful and such a nice guy and not his fault Sykes aren’t getting their facts right

  • "Absolutely loved our stay."

The accommodation was so clean and comfortable. The location was ideal to be able to walk between Robin Hoods bay and Scarborough . We walked different sections during our stay. One way along the cliff top/Cleveland Way and returned on the Cinder track. A brilliant place to recharge the batteries.

Spacious enough for 2 people. Every amenity you could hope for, very clean everything appears new. Would definitely stay again if I was coming to Scarborough, if I was nit picking the surrounding areas could be prettier, plant a few shrubs, flowers, nicer outdoor furniture but I’m being super picky overall it was great!

Extra directions to assist with post code issues were very well done and we had no problem locating the site. The view over Scarborough bay was great on clear days Low light pollution reveals a wonderful night sky too. The cottage is on a working farm but the work did not intrude on our enjoyment of the cottage. The interior was very clean and well prepared with a welcome gift. We had everything we needed. The TV was large and worked well and was located so it could comfortably be watched. James, the host was just great; we could have taken him home with us. This cottage is in a very good tourist location for the north Yorkshire coast. We understand that some Highland cattle are due onto the site soon to occupy the field next to the cottage.

It had everything we needed for a week's stay, and we looked forward to returning to this cosy retreat after a day's sightseeing. We were there in Winter, so didn't take full advantage of the outside space or walks to nearby pubs, although we did see wonderful sunsets and also deer from the garden. James is a fantastic host, and resolved a minor issue for us immediately. Cloughton is a great location to visit the North Yorks and Cleveland coasts from. Highly recommended.

About the location

CLOUGHTON

Scarborough 4.8 miles; Ravenscar 6.3 miles; Robin Hood's Bay 11.6 miles; Whitby 14.8 miles.

Cloughton lies just under five miles north of Scarborough, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Home to old cottages lining the main street and more modern developments behind, the village boasts an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional to bring a charming atmosphere to all its visitors, as well as offering a welcoming farm shop where you can pick up any essentials and two pubs on the main street and two on the outskirts. Close by is the popular 'Cinder Track', a disused 23 mile long railway track, that's now used for walking, cycling and horse riding. There is easy access to the Cleveland Way, a long distance trail that hugs the cliff top as it winds its way to Hayburn Wyke, a rocky cove with a waterfall and inn, Robin Hood's Bay and beyond to the north and south to Scarborough. Popular since Victorian times, this vibrant seaside town of Scarborough retains many of its original fine buildings, parks and gardens, as well as its historic castle which overlooks the town. North Bay and South Bay provide two superb stretches of beautiful, golden sandy beaches, popular with families and small children. There are a number of child-friendly activities and many excellent visitor attractions for grown-ups too, including the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough Spa and Scarborough Open Air Theatre for live music. There are plenty of outdoor activities within easy reach too, with golf courses, coastal walks along the Cleveland Way, stunning cycle routes such as the old railway to Whitby, beautiful sailing and championship quality surfing, offering something for every taste. Ideally situated for touring both the coast and countryside, Cloughton is an ideal base for a fun-filled break at any time of year.
