Keepers Cottage - what a wonderful find! A great location for anyone wanting a cosy, warm holiday in the middle of winter within easy reach of the coast, North Riding Forest Park and North York Moors National Park. The cottage is as described with plenty of room for two couples or a family of four. It was spotlessly clean and - the best part for me - was being able to have the cottage really warm on arrival and as warm as I wanted it thereafter 24/7. The lounge is spacious and has two settees, one of them being a recliner, so in the evenings we put our feet up and watched the good sized TV (We took our Apple TV to connect up so we could watch films etc on Netflix.) The WiFi was good although not secured with a password. The wood burning stove was really easy to light and the farmers kept us supplied with logs and kindling at no extra cost which was a bonus. The conservatory with 24/7 underfloor heating was wonderful and had great views of the area surrounding the farm from where we kept a watch for the resident barn owl and little owls. We regularly saw a buzzard with beautiful variant markings flying over and resting in the trees. From the conservatory the outdoor seating area is accessed. It was too cold (below freezing) for us to sit out but in warmer weather it will be good for those who prefer a semi-private space to relax in or to go out to look at the stars on a clear night. The shower over the bath was powerful and there was always plenty of hot water. The kitchen/dining room was big and well equipped with lots of cutlery and crockery plus plenty of storage for food if you like to eat in. (There’s a well stocked Lidl store in Pickering about 3 miles away.) If, like me, you prefer filter coffee to instant make sure you take a cafetière because I couldn’t find one. It was a nice touch though that when we arrived there was a tray on the side with sachets of tea and coffee and a packet of biscuits and also a bottle of fresh milk in the fridge. The two bedrooms were simply furnished and had enough storage for the number of guests. The single bed that I slept in was comfortable. The only real downside to the cottage for me (apart from no cafetière) was that there was no washing machine in the cottage as I don’t like going out to a shared machine. The owners/farmers were all really lovely and very helpful. We met Charles, Tony, Stephen and Rita and all were willing to spend a little time chatting, answering our questions about the farm, the biomass heating, solar panels, local bird life, etc. Thornton Le dale is a quaint little place and I’d recommend going up Dog Kennel Lane and Peasland Lane for a walk or drive as the views are lovely. On the way back, take a nice short walk down Priestman’s Lane from Church Hill then follow Thornton Beck back towards the village centre to see all the little waterways converge. Very quirky. All in all this was a great place to stay and somewhere I would like to stay again.

About the location

Pickering 2 miles; Scarborough 16 miles; York 25 miles.

The beautiful village of Thornton-le-Dale lies just two miles to the east of Pickering within The North York Moors National Park. Much of its charm comes from its complicated shape - a fascinating jumble of streams and paths and pretty houses with an attractive village green which still has its wooden stocks and a market cross. The village offers a selection of shops, pubs and tea rooms. The nearby market town of Pickering offers a good range of amenities and the famous North York Moors Steam Railway. There are broad fields above and below the village and views to the south across the Vale of Pickering, whilst to the north is the Forestry Commission's Dalby Forest, with several excellent nature trails to be enjoyed. Further afield, but within driving distance, are the east coast and the city of York.
