  • "Lovely property in a great location for exploring the East Yorkshire coast area."

Bus service was very good to get south to Whitby and north to Saltburn. Cottage was very clean, spacious and comfortable and the village has two good pubs, the Badger Hounds is just across the road and does excellent meals and good beer. Good area for walks both on the costal paths and further inland. A very enjoyable stay, would certainly return.

  • "A very pleasant place to stay."

Very clean and comfortable and nicely furnished. Pretty much everything that you have in your own home for a great break. The location suited us for easy access to the area without noise and hustle. Good reserved off road parking space for a large car or two smaller ones. A bus every half an hour if you don't want to drive everywhere. Nice front garden to sit in when the weather permits. Although at the front it has enough mature shrubs to still make it private and secluded. All in all a real gem of you want peace and quite with a high standard in a great !ocation.

Badger Hounds pub directly over the road good for food but limited vegan options but not a problem. Staithes is wonderful though watch the parking, park if you can in the council run car park at the top of the cliff (left hand side). Schoolhouse cafe in the village is fab too, great food. Walk to Brunswick Bay about a mile and a half away, though the slope back top can be a tough challenge! Co-op just down the road so good for convenience. lovely cliff top walk to Staithes with superb views. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

  • "Our very peaceful week spent at at Fern Cottage has delivered on every level from the very outset."

The cottage is very clean, spacious, well furnished and equipped to a good standard (plentiful stock of crockery, sharp knives, good variety of pans etc.). The bedrooms (one is en suite) offered very comfortable beds, plentiful storage hanging rails & drawer storage and the USB facility in the bedside lights were a very welcome novelty ! The large, well equipped Kitchen allowed made it easy to prepare food in (noting that the microwave was integral to the built in oven) and the private back patio offering a sunny morning “first cup of the day” sanctuary was pure indulgent therapy. The easily accessed (double space) private parking provision within the property was a much appreciated added luxury and replenishing the bird table with the fat balls and seed treats provided by the owners gave us all hours of joy. We felt very lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy the same home from home comforts that Richard and Sue would afford themselves when they stay at the Cottage. Each Sykes Cottage offers an individual delightful charm, Fern Cottage is no exception to this. We have enjoyed memorable opportunities to walk along and explore the beautiful local beaches, Staithes Harbour, Runswick Bay, Skinningrove (South), Robin Hoods Bay,Sandsend Beach (& Sandside Cafe). The Cod and Lobster Pub in Staithes Harbour offered vey large portion servings on nights we ate out. To mark my Dads 83rd birthday, he asked to re-visit the lovely Whitby centre and we sat people watching from the pier recalling many happy childhood visits to it’s Harbour and pier on our visit. We would of gone out to sea on a boat trip to Scarborough but the tides offered awkward sailing times. Later in the week we drove northwards, on the one rainy day we had, to visit the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool and witnessed the difference in coastal scenery from Noses Point through past Hartlepool (and the Hartlepool Monkey statue), through to Redcar, Saltburn-By-The-Sea, Marske by the Sea and Skinningrove Beaches. Inland we have been charmed by the contrasts seen in vast open upland moorland, undulating upland livestock farmland, coastal cliff top horizons through to the gentle village and streamside scenery of Great Ayton and the Waterfall Gardens, Thornton le Dale (and Mathewsons Classic Car Auction), Snainton and Pickering to name but a few. The Rapton Viewpoint (YO13 9EB / (54.2896588, -0.5643036)) offered breathtaking opportunities to marvel at local birds of prey in action. I would highly recommend spending a couple of hours in Malton and locating the Groovy Moo Ice Cream parlour for a treat. Needless to say, we now have to go home but leave knowing we really want to stay to see more of what this beautiful area has to offer….enjoy !

  • "A good location with lots of places close by to have days out."

Hinderwell has 2 pubs, a chipshop and local butchers for sampling good food and beer. The house is comfortable and had a travel cot, change mat, stair gate and IKEA highchair - great for our baby. A good selection of games and books The house is well heated and radiators are easy to turn up and down. The downstairs living space is large with plenty of sitting space Points to improve, in our opinion The log burner needs the chimney sweeping. The fire would only draw with the door ajar and went out very quickly when the door was shut. A point raised by a few previous guests. The double bedroom (non ensuite) door is difficult to close. Only a frustration for us when putting our baby to bed! We did have a blocked toilet which took too long to fix. The toilet was draining slowly whrbWe found our own plumber as Sykes, and the owner, struggled to find one quickly enough. With a baby, me being pregnant and mobility issues, this made not having a downstairs bathroom an issue for us. The owner did send tools however which my husband tried without success. This meant a day lost and I had to clean the bathroom thoroughly. The other members of our party had to move rooms to allow us all to use the ensuite during this time. We did receive compensation though which was appreciated.

The parking was very good. It is situated in a fantastic location with a lovely pub/restaurant across the road. Other amenities such as a amazing fish & chip shop & butchers selling essentials close by. Small supermarket within a mile. Although downstairs facilities suitable for a person with mobility difficulties, there are steps to the property. However a folding ramp might solve this. It is worth noting there is a very small step on entry to the righthand bedroom at the top of the stairs that when taking in the luggage I didn't see because the carpet made it blend in. I broke my toe. However this did not spoil my holiday & we have re booked the same property for our wedding anniversary in March. We are hoping to return again in the Autumn.

  • "What a lovely cottage!"

We had a fantastic 3 nights in August. We wish we'd booked more nights as we didn't get to enjoy the outdoor space. The kitchen is better equipped than our own! Could easily cook in it but we ate out each night. The badger and hounds across the road was very tasty. We took our 5 year old with us as well as my parents. She slept downstairs and wasn't bothered by us talking in the living room. The ensuite room definitely had a smaller bed in it (which is probably the only negative) we were lucky that it wasn't hot when we were there as the upstairs rooms might get hot. Special mention for the fossil finding kit. What a lovely touch. We took it with us to Staithes and did find a fossil. We are contemplating booking here again as it was so lovely. Thank you.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
