  • "The lodge is lovely but needs some TLC and maintenance this did not spoil our holiday."

Whoever is the cleaning company I would be looking to terminate their contract and appoint a company that does the job which you pay them for. I had read in earlier post that the lodge was freezing on arrival but it didn’t take long for the lodge to heat up it would have been nice if the heating was on low on arrival. No leisure passes in the lodge and no call back from the contact after leaving a message. Hopefully the issues that I have raised will get the owners springing into action before the spring summer season. We look forward to our next stay at the Sea Dog.

Its our 6th time over the years staying on the site in various types of property. The property was very homely and we did get to sit out on the patio to enjoy a late afternoon drink. Lights above the cooker did not work (probably bulbs need replacing) so a little dull for cooking this time of year.

Called Martin about this and said he would be with us within the hour and he didn’t show up, tried to call again no answer so ended up calling Sykes who got in touch with someone to bring us the pass and we received it 5 hours later. Maybe the pass shouldn’t be advertised as included in the price if it is not provided without chasing for it

We enjoyed our short stay. Very helpful maintenance man over bent window key. Would have appreciated a little more crockery. My main concern would be that the bedding is ready for renewing and upgrading for the advertised standard of the property. The towels were fine.

On closer inspection quite a lot of marks on paintwork. Beds uncomfortable. Batteries dead in remote control for one of the bedroom tv's . Curtains in lounge grubby at bottom. In the manual of instructions the washer/dryer instructions were for a previous model therefore not very helpful. Fridge door - one of the shelf/holders broken therefore could not use for taller items. No scissors provided. On the plus side the accommodation was otherwise well equipped with plenty of drawer and hanging space and very nice surroundings.

  • "Having stayed in three of these properties at The Bay, Sea Dog was not of high standard."

The general cleanliness was not good, dusty, dirty walls, areas behind/ under tables had not been swept. The chair in the living space was very shabby, this has been mentioned in previous reviews, but not rectified. The main shower had a damaged and dirty flex from shower head to wall. Skirting boards were also grubby and the chrome shaver point was rusty. There wasn’t enough crockery, only 2 small plates, some of the glasses in the cupboard needed washing before use. These holiday homes are all the same in structure, as we have experienced but very different in what is provided and the standard of upkeep from the companies that owners rely on or the owners themselves. Disappointed with this one. Definitely not a 5 star rating compared with the other properties offered by Sykes holidays on this site.

  • "Really lovely resort and comfortable and cosy accommodation."

Really nicely done out so it did feel like a bit of a treat to be there. My Mum has a similar pre-fab lodge at another resort, but this felt much more like a beach house then being in a caravan -light and airy with lovely high ceilings. Took full advantage of the washer/dryer! Our kids loved the arcade and my oldest son really enjoyed an Easter craft workshop we booked onto. The food in the pub is lovely -the pizzas are immense! Easy access to the beach -shame the rubbish weather meant we couldn't enjoy it as much as we would have liked. Onsite swimming pool was FREEZING! Be warned! And it rained so much that the adventure playground was waterlogged, but you can't plan for the weather! I think if we came again we'd wait until summer!

  • "Sea dog was a lovely stay had all amenities needed."

Had a tv in each room which was bonus for the kids. Nice big fridge and freezer. 2 bathrooms which was great when there is 4 of you. Am not one to complain about much but the only real downfalls mainly for my kids and partner was that the bathroom off twin the automatic light wouldn't always come on especially for them in the night, the double bed mattress was very pingy every time your turned over and also parking was an issue getting the kids in and out the car unless you pulled off the somewhat narrow drive which also could be fairly slippy when wet. Other than these few things it was a lovely week enjoying the surroundings and places to visit Scarborough, york, filey and bridlington

  • "Arrived to find we couldn’t get in as door would not open, this had been mentioned in a review in Nov 2022 but obviously had not been fixed, after many attempts it opened."

Next issue was it was freezing, I appreciate the price of electric but could the heating of not been switched on an hour before, Mum is 82 and was frozen, no thermostat so found the welcome pack and discovered all run by the boiler so switched it on but lit the wood burner too, brought our own logs and some fire lighters glad we did as nothing provided. We have booked 2 of these Beach Houses before and they are all set out the same and always loved them but I was quite disappointed with this one, I realise that the information does not mention providing, toiletries but no hand soap or anything to wash your hands when soap dish and dispensers provided, well in one bathroom anyway. kitchen lacking basics like dish cloth, washing up liquid, scissors and clean cups, washed everything before use. The shower in the Jack & Jill bathroom was dirty at the bottom near the door runners and when you turn it on it leaks all over the floor. It isn’t a cheap stay for 3 days but I would expect a chair in the lounge not to be shedding the leather as you sit in it. Didn’t spoil our weekend but not knowing if we can get back through the dodgy front door was no fun.

Re the lock problem, this was allegedly repaired, an invoice I have already paid the contractor. I personally visited on the 5th Feb and the lock was checked several times and appeared ok. The service company who look after the property were instructed to turn the heating on prior to each visit in cold weather and this will be addressed with them. The showers were checked when I visited and were clean so the comment is surprising but again will be checked with the service company. The chair in the living room has been slightly damaged likely by visitors dogs when in the property, I would dispute that it is 'shedding leather' , actually not leather! , it is scuffed in one corner. We actually provided a 'throw' for the chair, but this disappeared very quickly after it had been fitted, explanation unknown? Dish cloth, scissors and clean cups should have been in the property and this will be also taken up with my service provider. We do not provide most toiletries, but soap dispensers should have been filled, again this will be checked and rectified. The service company (contact details in the property) are contactable 24 hours a day, so I would have expected any 'key' issues to be relayed to them so they can hopefully be resolved quickly. The shower in the master bathroom is a luxury. The disadvantages of the accommodation are mattresses were old and so uncomfortable the pillows were flat and were stained as were the duvets. The duvet cover was thread bear and had a hole in it The sofa and chair was uncomfortable, peeling and also in need of replacing There was dried food on one of the plates, there was old open cooked chicken left in the fridge, the fan in the lounge area was extremely dirty, the floor had not been swept behind the television, surfaces ornaments were dusty the general cleanliness of the accommodation needs addressing by the owners with their cleaning contractor. Having said this if these were addressed I would highly recommend this property.

  • "We had a lovely stay here."

I was with my parents and my son, who is nearly two, so being on one level was perfect as he was able to safely explore the holiday home. The beds were really comfy, and the place felt so light and airy. There were only a few things that brought my rating down. The lack of some pots and pans/chopping boards, the place could do with some. We couldn't find the telly for the remote in the living area, only the fire stick remote so we were having to figure out watching live TV through ITV Hub/BBC iPlayer etc. We didn't have any information regarding using the facilities on the Bay, such as swimming, so we ended up not going. There were also some belongings left behind from the previous guest, a t-shirt that was on the floor in the living area (it does make you question how much cleaning happened before we arrived). Failing all that, we did still enjoy our break away. I think if those little details were looked at, a nice welcome message out on the table perhaps with all the info we needed (such as the swimming cards, the guest book etc although the biscuits and coffee in the box were nice touch), then it would of made our stay a 10/10.

Furnished to reflect the whole beach theme. Facilities were clean, property could do with a lock of paint but nothing that would have put us off. Toilets were amazing. The use of a cooker, dishwasher and washing machine certainly made life easy. Decking with seating was fabulous for those sunny days. The owner admits to requiring a new sofa, but has added a throw and some decorative cushions. The site itself is somewhat quiet, but the beach kept us busy. The walk to the beach is pretty steep but well worth it when you get there. Used the pizza takeaway service, we were not disappointed. Overall a great staycation. Handy location for visiting Filey and Scarborough where there is lots to do for kids. Having read some of the reviews we were a tad nervous, but there was absolutely no need! Cleaners and cleaning company manager called fairly quickly and said they thought we were not arriving till 4pm? We went for a walk and when we got back place cleaned. The manager did tell us that the owner was getting a new settee which was needed and also the ropes on the decking had all broken but he said they were to be mended. Decking needed some TLC. Also lounge needed some TLC too - a coat of paint would be nice. The bathrooms and bedrooms were lovely and clean, lovely fluffy towels and clean bedding etc. Just needs some TLC. I did get an email from yourselves saying that the manager told you we got there early that was the reason they had not finished cleaning. • "Dear Sirs The facilities were an absolute disgrace, especially when you consider it cost in excess of £1000 to stay."

The whole place was covered in dust, cob webs and general grime, wifi was non existent and the furniture was in horrendous condition, property was in desperate need of painting as well as a deep clean. Have the owners heard of a thing called COVID 19? Outside decking and furniture needs attention also. The only reason I didn't complain while I was there was due to the fact my wife asked me to not make a fuss as it would spoil our break. As a cleaning business owner for over 20 years I would strongly urge your management to vet the condition of the properties you let and that the property owner spend some of the money they charge to invest in the property urgently. We have stayed at the Bay on 2 other occasions and had no issues but if I am being honest this experience had left me wondering if I should use Sykes again or stay at the Bay. The state of this particular property has insured I would never stay at the Sea Dog again. As I am a repeat customer with Sykes, I would be most keen to get a reply to this email as well as a token gesture from either yourselves or the property owner for my families experience and the obscene overcharge I have incurred. Regards Colin Scullion 07885 088 265

There are some issues, which were rightly raised, many of which I was not aware of, and these will be resolved as quickly as possible. There have been some issues with my cleaning company and I have met the owner to discuss and to agree an action plan to rectify the issues raised and to maintain this standard going forward. Though the recent review questions my financial commitment to resolve the issues, I can assure all future guests that this is not the situation and finance will be provided, where needed, to bring the property back to the previous high standard. I would also add that some of the external issues, i.e., broken ropes on the patio, are the responsibility of The Bay, and these issues were reported to The Bay several weeks ago but the repairs had not been done. I have spoken to The Bay again and they have assured me the repairs will be done as a matter of urgency. Please accept my apologies for the recent issues and I can assure all future guests that the property will be restored and maintained to the high standards expected. John Wherrett Sea Dog Owner. There was also dirt on the floor, so I tried to vacuum the property however the vacuum didn't work properly so we had to put up with sweeping the floor which took a couple of hours. There was also a problem with the dishwasher - every time we opened it, it caught on the counter pulling the bottom part of it out. This became frustrating throughout the week. Then on the third day a family with three or four young children and a dog moved in next door and it was noisy and chaotic and spoiled things. The advert said there would be fire lighting equipment and enough for the wood-burner to start us off after which we would have to buy our fuel - but when we arrived there was a box of matches and an empty firelighter box - nothing else, which was disappointing. FILEY

Scarborough 7.7 miles; Bridlington 10.5 miles.

Filey is a traditional English seaside resort with a friendly atmosphere, offering a restful holiday, making an ideal place to stay for walkers and wildlife watchers at any time of the year. A real gem on the Yorkshire coast. A fishing town on the North East Coast, Filey has enjoyed a reputation of being a resort since Victorian times, set beside the magnificent Filey Bay, a long stretch of beautiful sand, with Filey Brigg and its shallow rockpools to the north. Filey Brigg is a low headland that protects Filey Bay and provides good bird watching and seawatching opportunities all year round. The 400 ft high Bempton Cliffs (RSPB Reserve) to the south of Filey Bay are home to over 250,000 seabirds in the summer. Gannets, kittiwakes, puffins, guillimots and razorbills all nest there. Gannets are regularly seen diving for fish in Filey Bay. The Brigg area is an ideal place to watch for common and rarer waders, seabirds and migrating warblers, finches and thrushes. As well as seabirds, seals and other marine life, such as porpoises dolphins and minke whales can be seen in the sea around the Brigg. The town itself seems almost caught in a time warp, retaining much of its character with individual shops, narrow paths and ginnels. There is a small coble landing, a slipway where local fishermen keep their boats, plus delightful beach chalets that can be hired through the summer months. The bay is edged with two promenades and there are various gardens, where brass bands play on a Sunday afternoon. This small town is family orientated, crazy golf and candy floss. Also in Filey there is the Filey Dams Nature Reserve, a wetland reserve where common and rare waders and wildfowl can be seen as well as autumn gatherings of swallows, sand martins and house martins. Also there is Parish Wood (just off Sycamore Avenue) an unexpected gem that offers a wealth of wildlife. Willow warbler, chiffchaff, blackcap and tree sparrows breed there and a wide variety of other species are regularly seen such as great spotted woodpeckers and sparrow hawks. Parish Wood also provides shelter and food for a wide range of migrant bird species such as goldcrests, pied and spotted flycatchers, warblers, finches, thrushes and woodcocks. A short drive brings you to the busier town of Scarborough where for family fun you can visit the Alpamare Waterpark, a waterpark unlike anything the UK has ever seen before, as well as plenty to explore and discover in this lovely area.
