  • "A very comfortable house with plenty of thoughtful touches to ensure a good holiday."

(And a real bonus to have a piano!) The owners were always discreet and always responsive to any question. It's true that the road leading up to the house is not the best but that should not put anybody off from choosing the house. Besides, there are plenty of excellent walks directly from the door including a walk into Guisborough.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay the cottage was great."

Well equipped and a lovely welcome basket on arrival with lots of nice goodies in it. There were a couple of things from a health and safety perspective that would have made the experience even better though: The were a couple of elderly members in our group who commented that a hand rail on the wall of the staircase would have made coming down easier for them as there was nothing to hold on to. Also slip mats in the bathrooms for baths and showers. We bought some which we left for future visitors to use. The only other issue of note was the driveway up to the cottage which was full of potholes and bumps which, even though we were driving v. slowly the car grounded on several times during the week; whilst suitable for 4x4s less so for normal cars or those lower to the ground. We limited ourselves to only going out and back once a day and back before dark because of the condition of the drive. The roadway was very long and steep, poorly lit (no lighting) with no passing areas, we noticed other buildings were being renovated, if busier this could be an issue.

It is in a wonderful setting with great views all round. Plenty of walks from the door, Roseberry Topping just over 1 ml, local woodlands, Cook Monument, Cleveland Way. Enjoyed sitting out in the evening sun watching the swallows.

No question this is hands down the best cottage we have stayed at. Communication with the owner was straight forward and helpful when locating the cottage in the early hours of the morning.

  • "What a lovely property, clean very well presented and off the beaten track, away from everyday normal life, so relaxing and peaceful."

It had all the home comforts, it really did have everything we needed. Met Paul the owner who's a lovely kind helpful chap. He was there when needed not intrusive at all. The property is a real gem and thank you for sharing. We hoped to return (providing the cost increase wasn't excessive), just looked today (23/12/21) and managed to get the same price roughly so we've booked again for 2022.

The long driveway was uneven and rutted in places, not good for some vehicles but that was a minor issue and fR outweighed by the amazing views from this place. Will definitely return

  • "Very good communication with Paul, the owner."

Cottage was very clean and comfortable, with everything that we would need. The welcome hamper was appreciated. Great internet connection. Excellent location for walking - Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook's monument can be reached directly from the cottage. The only issue for some might be the lane access to the cottage by car which is very steep in places and a rough track. Not a problem for our old BMW, but could be a problem for low slung cars. Would definitely stay again.

Rough track up to the cottage but was fine in my old Honda. Welcome pack was great and had all essentials we needed. Comfy beds and sofas, which makes it much more comfortable. The host was extremely helpful and was quick to respond when we had a fuse problem. All in all, a great stay cation in a lovely area.

  • "The peace, the quiet and the views were to die for."

It was so convenient to get to countryside and the coastline. The kitchen was fully equipped and the nicest touch was the welcoming basket with bread, coffee, tea and biscuits and milk and butter in fridge. Only problem we found was the road up to the farm!! Possessing an Audi car with thin tyred sport wheels the journey up-down from the cottage was slow and precarious trying to avoid the many pot holes. Despite this a very enjoyable stay in the cottage and would return again.

About the location

GREAT AYTON

Stokesley 3 miles; Guisborough 7 miles; Middlesbrough 8 miles.

The attractive village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of pretty stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330-metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafes, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks, and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside. A good base for market towns, the lovely countryside and, just a short drive, the East Coast.
