  • "A lovely cottage in a great location."

Accurately described - friendly neighbours and the owners were very helpful after I left some things accidentally. Everything was in good working order and the cottage was spotless - the only reason for the slightly lower rating on facilities and maintenance relates to the over bath shower - but this was accurately described in the listing and worked perfectly. I simply prefer a separate bath and shower. I would definitely return.

Perfect location. A lovely, little market town, which made a good base for visiting York, Whitby and Scarborough, as well as some of the more local towns and villages. We'd definitely recommend a stay here and would love to go back! Thank you.

  • "We are old and the evenings were chilly, we could not put the central heating on so had a log fire in the evenings."

We were instructed to buy our own logs and kindling. £700 is about right for this cottage and not any more. We did have a nice week and a lovely welcome pack. Had to leave a day early.

As proactive and responsible owners, we take customer feedback very seriously and really value constructive suggestions for improvements we can make to ensure our guests have an enjoyable stay. You can imagine, therefore, why we were particularly saddened and disappointed to receive these comments. We checked the central heating as soon as you left the property and found it to be working perfectly. Many owners, including B&Bs; and hotels, will have turned off the heating systems in their properties for the summer months, particularly given the spiralling energy costs. We, however, are mindful that summer evenings in Yorkshire can get chilly and leave the heating switched on with the control thermostat turned down. This is so that it doesn't get too hot during the warmer weather and guests can select their preferred temperature. All that is required to activate the heating is for the thermostat dial to be turned up to the required temperature. Like most heating systems, ours is set on a timed programme that can also be advanced with the press of a button. All of this information, including the location of the thermostat and photographs of the control, is highlighted in the guest information pack provided at the cottage. Whilst we are, of course, delighted to hear that you enjoyed your week at the cottage, it saddens us that you didn't give us the opportunity to resolve the issue during your stay - one quick phone call would have had you toasty and warm within minutes! A quick note on the provision of logs and kindling for the woodburner - our listing on the website specifically states that we include a starter pack. The stove is left made up and ready to light, even in the summer months. Despite the requirement to leave only one night's fuel in a starter pack, we do in fact leave enough for a couple of nights to give guests the chance to get settled in and decide whether they would like to use the woodburner throughout their stay. • "Everything was great about the house except for the bed in master room - the mattress was horrible!"

It really needs replacing because it’s way too soft. When you sleep on it it caves in and slumps into the middle. The extra, long pillow at the head of the bed does nothing to support a good sleep, there should be mattress there! Besides the bed we loved the house and the town is a great base for exploring the area.

We are sorry to hear that you found the mattress not to your taste. Beds, firm or otherwise, are one of the hardest things to judge for holiday property owners - what one guest finds too soft, another will find too hard, and vice versa. The mattress you refer to is actually only 18 months old. Instead of buying one of the bog standard, cheaply sprung, contract mattresses you often find in holiday lets, we bought a more expensive brand to try to ensure a good night's sleep. We went for mid-range firmness in the hope that this would suit most guests. As you will see from our other feedback, many people actually remark on how comfortable the beds are in our cottage. Indeed, the only other negative comment we had, just after we installed the new mattress, was that it was too firm! We take feedback from our guests very seriously and so we included a mattress topper to try to get the balance right. I suspect this is what you may have found too soft. It's a shame that you didn't let us know, during your stay, that you had an issue with the bed because we would have happily removed the topper to help alleviate the problem. Pillows are, again, a very personal choice. In addition to the long bolster, there is a selection of eight good quality pillows to choose from in the cottage, which are maintained and/or replaced on a regular basis. It's really hard to know what more we could do to ensure your comfort. Property Owner

Couldn't go wrong. It might be worth mentioning on the website that the stairs, having a right angled bend in them, could be difficult for older people who have difficulty with stairs (like me). I suggest a grab rail on the bend, on the wall opposite the banister rail. Just a thought. Loved the cottage.

We only discovered this after buying and preparing an evening meal. ingredients wasted and had to go out for a late evening meal. We had to eat out more times than we had budgeted for ! May have been more economic to stay in a hotel

Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. The owner has advised that she checks the oven during every changeover and noted that the fan and light came on so assumed it was working. Had you let her know there was a problem during your stay, she would have addressed this immediately. Upon finding your note on departure, she ordered a new oven which was fitted the same day after she realised the heating element had gone on the bottom oven (the top oven was still working). The hosts had anticipated everything you would need for a holiday home from home. The beds were amazing! We all slept so well after long days walking the countryside using the information books and maps we found in the cottage. We had brought our own, but needn’t have bothered and managed to clock up 20 to 30,000 steps/day, hardly meeting a soul....but we did meet lots of lovely lambs and ewes. Kirkbymoorside has wonderful shops, so you do not need to load up with food beforehand. Try the butcher, the baker, we didn’t find the candlestick maker but there are local craft shops, and very well stocked Coop and Spar, plus other independent retailers. All within a few minutes walk from the cottage. Lastly parking, as all historic towns, having somewhere to park is invaluable! We loved it :)
