  • "A lovely little cottage ideal for exploring a variety of North Yorkshire’s best towns, cities and coastlines."

Louisa & Neil couldn’t have been friendlier and more accommodating hosts before and during our stay. We were even treated to a bottle of bubbly and fresh roses on arrival! There is so much to do locally and an abundance of independently run shops and cafes which was great to see. The facilities in this cottage were spotless and we were sad to leave. However, we can’t wait until we can come back and visit the likes of Whitby, York, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge again.

  • "Absolutely fantastic place to stay."

Amazing views- little bit noisy early on on firework night but you could see loads of displays from Northallerton and Thirsk. Rest of time just the cows for company! House lovely. Heated bathroom floor was a huge hit when showering and having a bath was a joy as we don’t have one at home in our wet room! Large fridge and freezer and lots of cupboards for food too. Nothing we didn’t like - will definitely be back!

  • "Just back from an amazing week at Blackthorn Cottage."

I didn't realise there were places with far reaching unspoilt views like this still around in the UK. We met with the owner (Neil) briefly on the first day and he let us know anything we could need to know, even his farm routine to allow us to know in advance of any potential noise but we honestly encountered none in our whole week. The second time we met Neil was around mid week as the local water authority had unexpectedly done some work on the mains, but again we hadn't suffered any inconvenience or even noticed. I asked about a hill in the distance and Neil informed me it was 35 miles away - what a view! The cottage was warm and comfortable and had everything we could possibly have needed. Fantastic host and accommodation!

  • "My daughter and I came to stay at Blackthorn cottage over a weekend for a short break."

We had my 16 month granddaughter with us as well. We were welcomed very well by the owner who came to have a chat with us and pointed us to some places to go so our stay is enjoyable. The property itself was very clean and comfortable with a very good homely feel to it. In it was everything we needed to make our stay as comfortable and convenient as can be. I love the country side! We had a huge dose of it. I would sit out in the mornings and enjoy dawn in front of me being an expanse of fields full of nothingness. The evenings were even more special as I sat on the same spot watching and being mesmerised by the sunset. The property is well positioned with easy access to amenities. I would recommend 100 % anyone needing a short break to unwind. We would return if our way takes us in that direction again.

We were greeted by Niel the farmer who was very helpful about places to visit. We enjoyed a relaxing holiday on this working farm, which had easy access to Northallerton and Thirsk, also well place for trips to the coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough. A welcoming bottle of Prosecco and a carton of milk in the fridge together with a vase of flowers in the main room window were appreciated. Will be booking again.

  • "Blackthorn Cottage is a well appointed single level accommodation situated within the grounds of a working farm."

Having said that, there was very little noise, if none at all at most times and the cottage itself is easily accessed via a well laid gravel roadway. The facilities are well maintained and clean with good kitchen appliances and plenty of equipment. The garden area at the front of the building is predominantly South facing, so if you intend to visit during the summer, the garden area will be a massive attraction if you are a sun lover as there is nothing whatsoever to block out the huge views you get from there. There is also a pub style wooden table and bench seating outside at the premises. Overall, I would have no hesitation in giving ten stars for this cottage, as the owners are very approachable and very welcoming, but not 'in your face'. I hope to return next year.

  • "We have stayed in some amazing cottages over many years and whilst Blackthorn Cottage had the potential to be one of them it didn’t quite make it into that category for us."

We had a pleasant stay but there were some imperfections. The hosts were welcoming with flowers, Prosecco , coffee and milk left for us on arrival. The cottage was warm and cosy (occasionally too hot on sunny days), nicely furnished and tastefully decorated, however the bare shadeless light bulbs hanging from the ceiling in every room gave a very utilitarian appearance and generated a harsh light. I’d describe the cottage as clean but certainly not spotless with dirt under the table, layers of dust on surfaces, stickiness on kitchen cupboard doors, and general grime on bathroom walls. Unfortunately no cloth was provided to be able to wipe down surfaces. The wet room was huge but the major downside for us was the absence of a place to put one’s toiletries (other than the floor or window ledge behind the toilet!) and absolutely nowhere for shower gel, shampoo, etc whilst showering. Blackthorn Cottage is in an ideal location, feeling very rural and with superb views from every room and yet so close to the A19 to access the North York Moors easily. We had a week’s worth of hiking in stunning scenery but never drove more than 30 minutes from the cottage.

  • "We had a lovely relaxing holiday."

Owners were very helpful with any questions we had about the cottage and the local attractions. Great-grandson loved seeing the cows running around the fields. Great views across countryside towards Northallerton. Cottage was lovely and warm. Easy reach for both dales and moors. Only thing I can say if I'm being really picky is there wasn't a proper bread knife for slicing bread and cobs.

  • "Absolutely amazing cottage and wonderful stay."

The cottage had everything we needed for our stay and it was modern, comfortable and cosy and very clean. The enclosed garden area was perfect for my little boy to have a run around safely at the end of a day or for us to sit and enjoy the stunning, uninterrupted views (usually while eating cake!!). It feels like you are in the middle of nowhere but is very close to the A19 so is perfectly placed for many local attractions without having to travel too far. It is a working farm and the cottage is right next to the cow barn and the garden backs onto the field where the cows were grazing which my little boy thought was fantastic. We both enjoyed looking through the little window in the bedroom in the morning to see them. The owners couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful - they left us in peace but made sure we had everything we wanted and we’re there for advice about local amenities if needed. They were also happy to chat to my little boy all about the cows and tractors. A fantastic stay and we will be returning when we come back to Yorkshire. Thank you for our stay.

  • "Blackthorn is a beautiful cottage."

It is very comfortable, has a well-equipped kitchen, and it really was a joy to stay there. The mix of old and new furnishings and decor give the cottage a great ambience. Once the farmer had introduced himself to us after we arrived, we were left to it, and didn’t meet anyone else again, but they were on-hand if needed. We enjoyed watching the cows in the barn through the window above the bed, and some recently born calves. The underfloor heating was lovely but it sometimes made the cottage too warm, although the bedrooms were cool. It would be great to come back and be able to sit out in the private grassed area which catches the sun all day. Leaving fresh tulips for guests, and Prosecco, was a nice gesture. Looking forward to returning soon. Thank you

The accommodation was modern, spacious & well equipped with great views - we were treated to several fantastic firework displays across the valley given that our visited started on 5 November. As the weather was unseasonably mild we found the well insulated house to be a little too hot at times - this was easily remedied by opening some windows but we worried a bit about the owners heating bill! About the location

BORROWBY

Thirsk 5 miles; York 28 miles.

A delightful little village of steep streets and narrow lanes, Borrowby is situated on a hilltop on the edge of the Hambleton Hills overlooking the great Plains of York and Mowbray. Standing by the old cross on the green, visitors can enjoy an unrivalled view west to the Pennines and Penn Hill dotted with towns and villages and east to the North York Moors. At the centre of Borrowby is a traditional village pub – The Wheatsheaf Inn – serving local ales and food. Just 5 miles away are the market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton with their many amenities. Thirsk is possibly best known as the Darrowby of the late James Herriot (Alf Wight), famous vet and author. Today Thirsk is at the heart of "Herriot Country", Gateway to two National Parks - the Yorkshire Dales to the west and the North York Moors to the east.
