  • "Absolutely brilliant weekend."

Just what I needed. The Chapel is lovely. Mark was so lovely and helpful when I needed to speak to him. Provided lots of helpful information to make our stay even better. Would certainly recommend and will be back in the future.

  • "Really lovely accommodation and fantastic hosts who were very kind when I completely messed up arrangements for the key collection!"

The village is very small and there's no phone signal (not necessarily a bad thing!) and be aware some of the establishments don't open over winter months. But tea rooms & Coach House Inn both fab and everyone we met really lovely. We were only there 2 nighta but would be a great base for wider exploration.

  • "We recently returned from a weeks stay at the Chapel and I seriously have to commend the owners for creating such a fabulous holiday let."

We love staying out away from everything but also be near enough amenities, and the Chapel fits the bill perfectly for this being right on the edge of the idyllic and picturesque village of Rosedale Abbey. The house was perfect for us, a family of five with three generations ranging from 12 to 80. My 12 year old lived having the attic room, and having 2 shower/toilet rooms is ideal. The Chapel is a bit quirky (which we love) but also has all the modern amenities you need to make your stay very comfortable and easy. I hope we'll be back very soon.

  • "4 septuagenarian chaps for a walking holiday based in North Yorkshire."

Quiet location very good for walking; good pubs and cafes (one doubling as a shop for essentials) in the village for eating and drinking; accommodation very well equipped; good standard of fixtures, fittings and furnishings; kitchen well equipped with modern appliances and pots/pans etc. (a couple of our party fancy themselves as chefs and had no complaints); bedrooms comfortable and all of a decent size. Owner, Mark, very cheery and obliging. One of our number suggests the tv needs clearer instructions and a book or two on North Yorkshire flora and fauna might have been an added bonus.

Excellent location for the property in a beautiful village Property had all the facilities you would need Welcome champagne and shortbread appreciated However a few issues resulting in a 3 star rating when it could have been 5 star The entrance door lock needs replacing as very difficult to use The freezer looks like it has never been defrosted My wife cleaned the rubber seal on the washing machine before use and sustained a nasty cut as there was a hidden metal shard in the seal The bed linen is clean but years old and really needs renewing Attention to detail lets the property down which is disappointing

Rosedale is a beautiful village. The Abbey stores and tearoom were fantastic. A little disappointed that Sykes allowed us to book Saturday to Saturday but we had to leave on the Friday as the owner only books Friday to Friday. Lots of information given by the owner regarding walks etc. We had a very comfortable stay thanks.

  • "The Old Methodist Chapel is an ideal base for a walker’s holiday and yet is ideally situated for trips to the Yorkshire coast especially Whitby and Sandsend."

We were able to explore the area with two walks and also visit Whitby for some traditional and tasty fish n chips. Rosedale Abbey is a picturesque village laced in history. It is hard to believe that less than 100 years ago the dale was a flourishing mining area and life was extremely hard and yet now instead of working on the railway track you can walk the railway bed with the sound of grouse and other wildlife. It is a walker’s paradise, you can be out of the door and on a trail immediately. The chapel has kept it’s outward religious charm with the shape of all of the windows and yet inside it is a model for comfortable living. All four bedrooms are of a good size. There are two bathrooms which serve the occupants well. It is a place for a family yet you do have to be careful of the steep stairs if there are toddlers about. It can be a place for just adults but the situation of the second bathroom might not to be everyone’s choosing. Personally we found it very helpful coming in off a walk. A really good week. Thanks.

  • "What a little gem!"

I booked this for a 50th birthday celebration with my friends and the minute we started looking for a cottage we were instantly drawn to The Old Methodist Chapel. The day before we arrived a friend informed me that they had stayed there also and told me we wouldn't be disappointed and we certainly weren't. It's such a homely place to stay and as the weather wasn't great on the Friday we lit a fire and settled down for a night of comfort. We all instantly felt at home and after the weekend we all agreed that it would be a place that we would definitely stay at again and we hope (planning permitted) to make this an annual event. Mark (owner) was very helpful when I spoke with him before our stay and full of information on things to do and places eat in the area. I would say we struggled slightly with the range cooker as none of us were use to cooking on a range but that didn't spoil our visit. I would highly recommend The Old Methodist Chapel

Kitchen is a great size both for cooking and eating and we loved the two fridges! Bedrooms comfortable and it is helpful being able to have an area for muddy shoes (although we didn’t have any as the weather was beautiful). From booking to arranging the keys, could not have been easier, thank you.

The accommodation was first class with a spacious living room and kitchen/dining area. The bedrooms were a good size and had comfortable beds and there was always plenty of hot water whenever required. The range cooker was great for cooked breakfasts and although rather different to conventional cookers we found it easy enough to operate. Whoever carried out the conversion did a great job and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a lovely village. Thank you to the owner for the bottle of fizz and biscuits which were left for our arrival, a nice touch well appreciated.

  • "Quirky and cosy, well equipped property on four levels."

Two good sized fridges in the kitchen, good size freezer and washer/dryer in the boot room. Everon stove (Aga style) was a bit of a challenge but we managed ok. Good size bedrooms with comfy beds (bed linen could do with being upgraded), lovely big kitchen with large farmhouse kitchen table. Beautiful lounge with an open coal fire which was perfect for our Christmas stay? The Christmas decorations and Christmas tree were perfect, even down to putting chocolates on the tree for our small grandchildren. A welcome pack of Champagne and biscuits was much appreciated and we all enjoyed the 'treasure hunt', especially when there was treasure (sweets) at the end of it. The location is stunning and we all had our own version of which window had the best view. The window shapes in the cottage are varied with some being arch, round, stained etc. Our grandchildren loved each morning looking out to see the sheep and horses in the field next to the cottage. We cannot comment on the village facilities as being Christmas most were closed over the time we were there. There is a good size bathroom with a toilet, bath and an electric shower on the 2nd floor, a shower and toilet on the ground floor off the boot room. Attention to detail in regards to cleaning could be improved - big cobwebs, dead flies on window sills. Outside space a little grubby - big cobwebs, dead spiders and flies need sweeping off of the inside of the canopy outside the front door. There are two allocated parking bays outside the cottage. We had a fabulous family Christmas (4 adults, 2 small children) and all loved the quirky style of the cottage, we have some lovely memories which we will treasure forever, in fact our two little grandchildren didn't want to leave. We are listing a few little niggles which could be improved upon but by no means did they impact on our stay: Bedroom on the top floor has a curtain across the door opening (no closing door) Poor water flow re shower on 2nd floor. Boot room shower could do with some heat in it, heated towel rail not working, bit of an upgrade would improve this area, it could be a bit smarter and cleaner. Front door curtain needs replacing, existing one very shabby.

  • "This is a beautiful place in a beautiful location with lots of thought having gone in to what people of all ages would like."

Lovely village with great facilities: pubs and small shops and cafes. However there was a huge expectation, and we were reminded about this throughout the house that we were expected to leave the house as clean and tidy as we found it. There were numerous mops and hoovers throughout the house. However they were two things: it wasn't actually that clean, there were lots of cobwebs and dead flies on windowsills (on the slopes by the beautiful stained glass windows), and secondly they were insistent that we had to leave on time because the house would need to be cleaned!! We had to strip the beds and put all our towels in a pile. I think if you are going to ask people to do all this this needs to be reflected in the price and you need to pre warn people. Maybe some people would happily do this it if was a bit cheaper. I have certainly never been asked to do this on any of your holidays, or any other self catering holiday. The information folder in the accommodation was very comprehensive.

About the location

ROSEDALE ABBEY

Kirkbymoorside 8 miles; Pickering 10 miles; Whitby 16 miles.

Situated in the heart of the North York Moors National Park and handily placed for touring both the Moors and the Coast, the picturesque village of Rosedale Abbey is set within Rosedale, a beautiful valley of sweeping hillsides and breath-taking views. Rosedale is surrounded by wonderful moorland countryside with footpaths and bridleways radiating out in every direction. Today, a stone pillar, staircase and sundial are all that is left of the 12th century Cistercian Priory that gave the village its unusual name. Charming stone-built cottages cluster around the village green alongside village shops, tearooms, two old coaching inns and a glass studio; which featured recently in an episode of the BBC’s “Countryfile” programme. Rosedale Abbey also has its own 9-hole golf course but for golf enthusiasts, there are a number of excellent courses in the vicinity. The bustling market towns of Kirkbymoorside, Pickering and Helmsley offer a good selection of amenities, including restaurants, independent shops and markets, whilst the abbeys at Rievaulx and Byland are well worth a visit. An easy drive takes you to Castle Howard and the historic city of York whilst the coastal resorts of Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough are all within reach. Guests can take a step back in time by booking a trip on the North York Moors Steam Railway at nearby Pickering, as well as learn of the area’s rich and exciting history at the Ryedale Folk Museum, which holds workshops throughout the year. Embrace the outdoors at Go Ape in Dalby forest for a truly memorable and adventurous family fun day out, or lose yourself in The Great Yorkshire Maze.
