  • "Fantastic cottage, really well kept and clean."

Very cute! Short little wander to the beach which was great for us with our wee pooch. Parking was not an issue for us, there was always a space outside or if you didn't want to park on the narrow lane there was parking on the street at the bottom of the lane (about 50 metres away). Marske on sea was great for a wander, very handy small sainsburys local round the corner. Perfect place for a quiet week away. Owner was great, kept in contact to check all was ok. Would definitely recommend.

  • "Lovely well equipped cottage!"

Comfy beds, well decorated rooms and a tiny handy kitchen. Spacious bathroom with bath and shower and pretty courtyard garden out the back. It must be said that immediate outside parking is very limited. The cottage is on a quaint narrow lane. Reversing out is not for the faint hearted! However there is usually plenty of parking space on Church lane less than 5 minutes walk away. The less said about Marske by the Sea the better….it is a gem but it’s OUR gem. Thanks Rachael for sharing your cottage. G&M

Thank you for your feedback George; I'm really pleased that you enjoyed your stay. I agree reversing out of the road can take a bit of practice; hopefully you managed. You're right; Marske is a Gem!!! Kind Regards, Rachael. Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful location."

All very clean and tidy. The beds were comfy - always a bonus. Had all the bits and bobs we needed such as washing-up liquid, hand soap, some tea and coffee - these are all little extras that are appreciated. The fizz and chocolates were a lovely surprise too. The courtyard at the back is small, and our dog needed a bigger space really, but we just went for lots of beach walks instead to tire her out. We parked in the neighbouring street as it was tight for our VW van. Plenty of parking near to the cottage. Marske itself is great - the cottage is a couple of minutes walk from the centre - small Sainsburys, pub, bigger Co-op and great cafes, pet shop, post office and bakery. Everything you need without having to drive. Can walk along the beach a couple of miles either way to the next town. Beach is dog friendly and generally very quiet. Locals are very friendly too. Middlesborough very close and Whitby, Sandsend, Staithes not too far away. Would definitely return here.

Thank you so much for your review Helen and I'm pleased that you liked our cottage and would like to return in the future. We also own the house next door to The Sanctuary (The Hide Away) which has more space at the rear, probably half as big again. If you take a look at the pictures online you'd get a general feel for the size. Hope to welcome you back again in the future. Kind Regards, Rachael.x Property Owner

It felt like a real home, beautifully prepared, rather than a standard holiday rental. Needing to book from Friday to Friday was inconvenient - we missed the first day/night because of this.

Thank you so much for your review Judith. I'm really pleased you liked our holiday cottage so much. I am so sorry about the Friday - Friday booking. We need to set a changeover date based on cleaner's availability. We had used an alternative cleaning company and accepted Saturday to Saturday bookings but found the standard of clean just wasn't up to scratch. The cleaners we now use are fabulous but they like to enjoy weekends off over the summer period hence in peak season we can only accept Friday-Friday bookings. I hope we can welcome you back again soon. Kind Regards, Rachael xx Property Owner

  • "Lovely terrace cottage clean comfortable with everything you might need."

Our only concerns were rhe street parking area narrow means having to have the car wheels on pavement, apparently firstly come gets the space otherwise could be difficult to find somewhere. 5min walk to beach for me 9mins my husband has significant disabilities so this certainly wasn't the place for him. Such a shame Marske has some beautiful beaches . Sadley the above did spoil the holiday for us..

Thank you for your feedback Jenny. It was lovely to meet you and I'm pleased to hear that you liked our cottage but sad to hear the extra time it took to walk to the beach spoiled your holiday. Just for reference and for anyone else considering the walk to the beach, the walk based on Google maps is 400 metres (0.25 miles) and the 5 minutes stated in the cottage description is based on this. It states the average person walks at 3.1 mile per hour pace and so 400 metres would take 4 minutes, however we rounded this up to 5 minutes. It doesn't however take into account that walking speeds may vary and certainly as you said with your husband having a disability and walking with a stick it would take longer. Just to clarify the parking situation, the first parking spot on the right hand side which you parked in throughout your stay does require the driver side wheels to be parked on the curb to enable other cars to pass due to the protruding curb on the opposite side. The other car parking spaces do not however require wheels to be parked on the curb. If you liked Marske and wanted to be closer to the beach there are a number of other Sykes Cottages which are located within about 50-100 metres of the beach, however, they are obviously further away from the village centre. I'm sure Sykes staff will be happy to assist you in choosing an alternative cottage should you wish to visit Marske in the future. Kind Regards, Rachael. Property Owner

The owner obviously takes a pride in her property and it was very well equipped, clean and comfortable. The welcome pack was a really nice touch too. Marske itself is a small, quiet town, but has a couple of bars and restaurants - we had a good meal at the Vault & there's a lovely cafe/bar "In the Dog House" tucked away opposite the fish & chip shop (that is also very good). The biggest pub, The Ship Inn is closed throughout the week, only opening at weekends at the moment. All in all, we had a relaxing break plus a couple of days of really good weather when we did walks from Markse to Staithes (along the coastal path from Saltburn), plus the hike up to Roseberry Topping and along the ridge to the Cook Monument. We needn’t have worried as the cottage exceeded our expectations, everywhere was spotlessly clean, very comfortable but cosy and well equipped with all we needed to have a fabulous stay. Rachael is the perfect host, she knocked to make sure everything was fine for us, she’s there if you need her but not intrusive. The welcome pack was lovely & the wine & chocolates very welcome & thoughtful. The cottage is decorated beautifully, as there was only the two of us we only used one bedroom but the bed was very comfortable & plenty of storage space. The beach is only five minutes walk through the gardens & goes on for miles so the doggies really appreciated the long walks. Marske is a great little town, only two minutes walk from the cottage & has a good variety of shops, pubs & takeaways & most were open considering it was only the second week after lockdown was eased. This was our first visit to the north east & we had some lovely days out, there is plenty of places within a short drive. We had a wonderful holiday & will be back as there’s plenty more to explore. About the location

MARSKE-BY-THE-SEA

Saltburn 3 miles; Redcar 3 miles; Whitby 20 miles.

Marske-by-the-Sea is a small, bustling coastal village with long, wide, sandy beaches. Originally an old fishing village, today it has a selection of local shops and pubs, which cater for all the family, plus the safe, sandy beaches, sand dunes and fishing boats are an enticing attraction. Places of interest nearby include Captain Cook's birthplace, the mining museum, and the Zetland Lifeboat Museum. Within easy reach of this quaint village is a horse riding centre, the stunning scenery of the North York Moors, through which runs a steam railway line, and the numerous pretty inland villages and fishing villages including Staithes and Runswick Bay. The old Victorian spa town of Saltburn is just 3 miles away and it's an easy drive to other seaside resorts such as Whitby. A great base from which to tour the area.
