    Would definitely recommend.

  • "A perfect cosy house, with off street parking, just a 10 minute walk to the walls and 20 minutes to the city centre."

Didn't have to use the car once. I had a really relaxing stay with my daughter and toddler grandson, visiting all the attractions. I'd highly recommend this holiday let, and would gladly stay again.

  • "Blacksmiths Retreat was a lovely comfortable place to stay well equipped with everything you needed."

It is well located to visit all the attractions York has to offer with the added bonus of a parking space. The owners greeted us on arrival and provided a welcome pack so we could have a cuppa after our long drive. Would definitely recommend.

Well equipped kitchen, lots of space. We had one small issue which the owner sorted quickly. Nice touches like the welcome packs, milk in the fridge and bathroom toiletries. Would definitely recommend this house and would stay again.

  • "We enjoyed our stay in "Blacksmiths Retreat" It's a great cottage, well equipped, clean, tidy and comfortable."

The roof terrace is a nice feature. The cottage has excellent access to York. A 20 minute stroll to the centre of town, or a 3 minute walk to bus stops with frequent services in and out of town. There are several pubs in walking distance, and a Sainsbury local, as well as many take-away food shops Parking is easy, but could be a bit tight with a large car. The brief contacts we had with the owners were pleasant and friendly. My only comment is factual rather than negative, is that the stairs in the property are steep, there is a good rail, but if you have mobility issues, perhaps worth noting. (there is no picture of the stairs on the site).

  • "Excellent location for exploring York Centre or visiting places further away."

Only kitchen on GF but does have 2 seater dining table down there. Bedrooms up 2 flights of stairs. Couple of random steps on way down to lounge too. Has roof terrace but wasn't the weather to sit out there. Plenty cups and glasses, bit lacking on cooking equipment like dishes etc but have spoken to the owner about this and they have already rectified. Has washer and airer to dry and dishwasher. Shower and separate bath which was good for the littleun. No welcome booklet just a card with WiFi code and enjoy your stay note. Overall a good stay. Would recommend.

Thank you for your comments and I was glad to help. We have tried to make it clear on the pictures regarding the step to the lounge but will also add a bullet point about this to the advert. To clarify, the bedrooms are not up two flights of stairs, there are just four steps. Property Owner

  • "If you love York, you’ll love this place."

The location is fantastic, just 5 minutes walk from the walls; close enough to be handy for the city but slightly off the beaten track so not too busy and noisy. We had a comfortable stay although we have suggested to the owner it could do with a little more kitchen equipment as we didn’t eat out. There are three TVs but no dvd player and the wifi wasn’t great if everyone is online at the same time but this wasn’t a big deal. Parking is off the street which was very comforting, the beds are comfy and everything worked as you’d want. When we return to visit York we’ll be looking to book this place again.

! And guessed on the dishwasher!!

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you found the property dusty. The property was checked before your arrival, the beds are pulled out and hoovered regularly. The double bed in the back bedroom was brand new that day and the carpet was hoovered before the bed was put up by myself. The instructions for the appliances are there a previous guest had left them in the wine rack.If you had contacted us straightaway we would have rectified any issues as we are only downstairs as advised on arrival. Not far to walk to Micklegate, warm and friendly owner who welcomed us on arrival and was accommodating throughout our stay. Lovely warm and clean house. Everything was spotlessly clean and tidy, we felt very much at home there and will definitely be returning soon to explore more.

  • "Lovely house in good location close to the city."

We trained to York and walked for the whole weekend with no issues. House was warm and comfortable and kitchen equipped enough for light cooking. Bit low on the cleanliness score as lots of dusty skirtings, corners with cobwebs and inside radiators full of dust. Generally clean enough just odd bits and no use for a dust allergy.

  • "First impression was how clean the property was and the welcome pack from the owner (who stays next door)."

The owner popped in as we arrived to let us know where they were if we encountered any problems which is a nice touch. All appliances work well, large tv in lounge and a tv in each of the bedrooms. The couch is comfy after trailing round York all day (nice snooze for 1/2 hour). The double bed was a bit soft for us but that’s just a personal choice. If I could just make a couple of suggestions it would be to have a couple of fans available and 2 bins in the kitchen one for recycling and one for general waste. If we are visiting York again we will try and book blacksmiths retreat again

  • "Our holiday got off to a disastrous start as when we arrived at the property no keys to the property were in the key safe."

Luckily Sykes staff answered the telephone and were able to contact the owner. Luckily the owners live next door to the holiday property and luckily they were at home. The owners said they had not been informed of our booking and so were not expecting us. Luckily they were able to get hold of their cleaner and were able to get the property ready for us. The owners were embarrassed by this mess up by Sykes booking procedure and were very apologetic. We were able to use the toilet at the property and to put our food shopping in the fridge which the previous guests who had left that morning luckily had left clean. We then had to wander round the town for an hour and a half whilst the property was cleaned for us. Luckily it was dry pleasant weather. There was a lot of luck in our experience in this disastrous arrival and the whole event could have been much worse. In our opinion there is no excuse for this mix up, it has destroyed our faith in the Sykes company and it did put a damper on our holiday. Post covid faith that your properties are thoroughly cleaned between bookings is paramount to us. The property appeared clean but the cleaner only had chance to do a quick clean as it was 5pm when we arrived and understandably we wanted to get into the property as soon as possible as we had been travelling and visiting a local museum all day and had been looking forward to a relaxing evening cooking and eating a meal in the holiday rental.

So sorry about the booking mix up and Blacksmiths Retreat was not ready for you when you arrived I can only apologise again, this has never happened before in either of my holiday properties. I can assure you we take post covid cleaning very seriously and the cleaner had two other cleaners with her to make sure the property had a thorough clean as normal. Hope you had a safe and pleasant journey home via Sheffield. Once again our sincere apologies regards Sam Property Owner

It,s an ideal base to explore York and the surroundings also only five minutes walk from York railway station, the only thing i have found when booking a cottage or house through this or other such sites, is that all the ones i have been to in the past have had a information pack that you can look through if your unsure about any factor of the property you are staying in. That said i printed out most of the detail,s from the sykes site before i came to York, but i have only praise for the house and it,s owners and York is a wonderful city .

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

I worked from the house during the day - the WiFi was good and the dining room made a lovely temporary office as the light was great. The city walls and some lovely cafes were just minutes away. The rooms were comfortable, the kitchen well equipped (although we ate out every night). The friendly owner lives next door and checked in when we arrived and before we left to see everything was ok. There were just two of us. It might be a tad cosy for four adults but it’s proximity to York would more than compensate.
