The vacuum doesn't work, the cupboard under the stairs is full of old paint tins, looking at the previous reviews these problems have been ongoing for sometime yet still no one has addressed them, the flooring in the hallway needs replacing and is dangerous as it's all uneven and is lifting, no information on when bin days are or where the outside bins are kept, the garden was all overgrown and dirty.

  • "Fantastic location in regards to amenities and for any train enthusiast."

The towels and bedding were clean and the property was tidy on entry, however there is, in my personal opinion a great opportunity for growth with some repairs and maintenance. The toilet flush needs replacing, the kitchen tap needs looking at as the pressure on the cold was temperamental. The listing states the property is child friendly but there was no highchair available. I did bring my own booster seat. The hoover did not work which I know for some will not be a big deal but with small children it just enabled me to keep the floor clean and safe for my toddler. There is no where to place rubbish when the bin is full and no where to recycle so we ended up piling it in the garden. Again with small children and one in nappies the bin filled quickly. The floor throughout the hallway could do with replacing as it was broken in several places with it being a high traffic area. The lino in the bathroom was also split. The beds are extremely uncomfortable and in need of new mattresses. You literally sink into them and the double bed you roll into the middle. I appreciate that everyone sleeping styles are different but this lead to us not sleeping great for several nights. The welcome pack on arrival of bread, milk, crisps, biscuits was a lovely touch but maybe a suggestion of either a welcome note with some basics about the house I.e using the oven, where to store rubbish, the internet password might be useful and more inviting. (I’m not daft I know it’s on the bottom of the box but some people may not.) An emergency contact number potentially. There were plenty of information leaflets regarding attractions in the area but some were dated 2019 maybe an idea to sort through? For the price, heavily discounted on Skye’s Cottages, I paid for bank holiday weekend in August it was ok and gave us a base but I would have been requesting money back if I’d paid the full amount there is so much potential for this little cottage but our stay was a little disappointing.

  • "The cottage is lovely and great location."

We wasn’t far from anything. 20mins to Whitby, 10mins to flamingoland. We found an alpaca trek which was 20mins away and brilliant. So we was very happy with location. Stem train station directly across the road. It was lovely hearing them. Pickering it’s self. Isn’t that impressive. Not many places to eat on an evening the chippy round the corner closes at 7.30pm. Not great when you have been out all day and want to go get tea. Parking: there is parking outside the cottage which you can park overnight. But for long stay parking go to Lidl there is longstay parking opposite their own parking and it’s 24hrs for £6. Now the cottage. Yes the cottage is lovely. But it is in desperate need of a make over. The decor of the cottage is not of high standard. And the shower is poor. Which is such a shame because it let the cottage down so much.

The house is great with brilliant location. The fully paved garden is a great sun trap with comfortable seating The house is fully kitted out including washing machine. The owners supplied a handy welcome pack inc bread milk and tea and as the Coop and Lidl are both only a couple of 100 yards away there was no need for us to take any food with us. The town of Pickering is really nice and very friendly. Various places accept dogs. Parking is an issue as the town centre car park only allows 2 hours during the day and the off road parking is only for 1 hour over the same period...unlimited free parking overnight. There are two long stay car parks but the nearest one was closed for maintenance.

  • "We really enjoyed our holiday in North Yorkshire as always, but were most disappointed with the general presentation of the cottage."

It fell way below the standard we've experienced with Sykes Cottages over the many years we have been using them. The cottage needs a really deep clean, the carpets and flooring need replacing, the floorboards need attention as they were dangerously loose in places and it is in need of redecoration throughout. The boiler needs attention as we had difficulty getting any hot water - it was only lukewarm. Also the description of the cottage said there was free parking opposite the cottage on a first come first served basis. This was only partially true as parking during the day was limited to 1 hour but free from 6pm to 8am. This needs to be made clear on the description. On the plus side the cottage was in an excellent position near the centre of Pickering. I would not recommend renting this cottage to anyone in it's present condition.

She loves trains so we took a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and drove to York to visit the railway museum. We did feel the property looked tired and there were areas were the property had been painted then not finished. We would have found it useful to have some sort of welcome pack with Wi-Fi details, knowing where to leave black bags, recommended local places etc. plus we had planned on doing some washing especially with a little one but could only do a few things and had to use the radiator to dry as cold out and wouldn’t want to hang outside. For us a airer in the storage cupboard would have been really useful.

The heritage railway was not open when we were there but i can imagine when it does open Pickering could be very busy so parking would be a problem. Lots of very nice shops in Pickering , good market on a Monday, plus a couple of great butchers. The cottage suited our needs for a weeks break during these covid times, allowing us to get away but keep safe. If I'm honest the cottage could easily be improved for its guests by leaving a small information brochure about the operations of the facilities it had. ie cooker, washing m/c, central heating, wifi password etc. We couldn't find this information. Also the bathroom could use a hand towel rail next to the sink and toilet roll holder. Having said that it was very clean and comfy and plenty of room in the kitchen. Do go and visit the raptor/ owl sanctuary " National centre for birds of prey" in Helmsley well worth a visit , great flying shows and very friendly/ informative staff. Very covid safe as all outside and plenty of picnic areas. Visited a couple of English Heritage sites locally but had to put an app on my phone to book a place online first as you cannot just turn up. Loved the fire in the living room, very cosy and homely - just what we wanted for a relaxing romantic getaway. Decor was not overdone and suited the feel of the cottage, furnishings were comfy, we really liked the sofas to sit and watch TV in the evenings. Didn't do much cooking so can't comment on kitchen amenities, although it would have been good to have some oven gloves. During the course of the week there was a lack of hot water, although this wasn't a massive issue it was inconvenient at times for washing up (as there was no dishwasher) and having a bath. We felt it was unnecessary to be queried on our age (early 20's) as we had stated at the time of booking that there were only going to be two of us staying so there would be no wild parties. Would be happy to stay there again as we really enjoyed our time there and love Yorkshire, much nicer to have a home to stay in and have our own space, than being in a hotel.

My asthma during our weeks stay was the worst it has been in five years. Most of the kitchen crockery and cooking equipment had to be washed before we could use it and the floors were dirty. The mattress on the double bed was the most uncomfortable mattress we have ever had the misfortune to sleep (or not as was the case) on. After one night we moved into the room with two single beds and put our young daughter in the double. It needs to be replaced. • "Pros -It was a lovely cottage, clearly very popular."

It had everything we needed and though we only spent a short time there it was an oasis of calm - even with the steam trains across the road, which of course we loved too. The beds were very comfy, the shower bliss, and the kitchen well equipped. We had our lunch in the sun on the back patio, eating yummy pork pies from the bakery a few doors away. There was even a Costa on the street corner! We bought flowerings from the nursery shop next door and found the market town shops round the corner totally dog friendly - never known anywhere quite so dog friendly, and the cottage was too. The sofa's and big TV were perfect for an evening in after a day on the moor at Levisham watching the steam trains. I'm sorry we didn't write this in your guest book, but I'm sure you are not short of happy visitors. It is a very pretty, bright and well appointed little cottage. Cons - not much wrong at all just the light carpets were a bit stained here and there, but I suppose it's late in the season and there's probably not been much chance to shampoo them yet. Car parking was our only issue, because we didn't get to sleep-in since the car had to be moved by 9am every morning and no return permitted within 2 hours. Not sure everyone adhered to this, but it would be ideal if there was a parking disk or similar arrangement available for parking near the cottage. Many thanks!

With all amenities on the doorstep, it is well placed for exploring the spectacular surrounding moorland scenery and within a half hour's drive of the seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough.

Nicely renovated to a good standard, there is a modern galley-style kitchen and a separate dining room, with a living-flame gas fire set in a Victorian fireplace.

The cosy and comfortable sitting room is at the front of the property, again with a living-flame gas fire and boasting a 50" TV.

Upstairs, the two bedrooms are tastefully furnished, with quality bedding, the front bedroom looking directly out across to the railway station.

To the rear of the cottage is a small, enclosed sheltered courtyard - an absolute sun trap, where guests can sit and relax with a drink and listen to the steam trains puffing into the station.

A steam train trip is a must for both young and old, as it winds its way through the beautiful heather-clad moors to the small village of Grosmont.

Pickering is known as the Gateway to the North York Moors, and has an excellent array of quaint tea rooms, pubs, restaurants and a twice-weekly market held in the cobbled main street.

Enjoy a visit to the Beck Isle Museum, climb up to the castle, or try your hand at trout fishing, all within five minutes' walk.

Walkers and cyclists are spoilt for choice, with an abundance of public footpaths and trails in the area, including the wonderful Dalby Forest Outdoor Pursuit Centre, just a few miles away.

With easy access to the rugged East Coast and many nearby family attractions, including Flamingo Land and Ryedale Folk Museum, this warm and welcoming holiday home provides an excellent choice.
