  • "Fantastic location, facilities are excellent."

  • "The property is in need of some repairs."

The showers don’t work well. Downstairs toilet and shower is not working right. Mouldy shower upstairs. The radiators were thick with dust. I could hardly breathe in there as I have mild asthma which was made worse by the dirty radiators. The blinds are all dirty. The curtains should be black outs to help sleep. The couch downstairs was not very comfortable. The kitchen is basic and functional but very old and tired. Glass broken in internal door. Big Mirror upstairs in single bedroom is just placed on the chest of drawers. My daughter was closing a drawer and the mirror nearly smashed on her, that mirror needs putting on the wall for safety. The hair dryer is probably 30 years old, it’s rubbish. The carpets feel old and dusty. The gate is old and rotten and the lock has rusted off. The beds were comfortable and the linen and towels were clean. The views are amazing and the proximity to the beach and restaurants of Sandsend is perfect. House just needs a major refurb, it doesn’t feel like anything’s been done for 20 years.

The review above was written in response to Sykes claiming from the Good Housekeeping Bond for some of the damage after the property was left in a very poor state by the guests. To answer the specific points: Subsequent guests have confirmed that all the showers and WCs work well, cleaners have checked the radiators and blinds, the freestanding mirrors have not caused any issues. There is a cracked pane of glass in an internal door that is due to be replaced but was taped for safety. The hair dryer is recent, all the carpets were replaced in 2023 (apart from the stairs and hallway upstairs) following a full re-decoration last year. The gate lock was broken during the week in question. We have recently replaced one of the two sofas with armchairs as some people found the sofa rather too soft. The property is deliberately priced as a Sykes 4* rather than 5* as not everything, including the kitchen, is brand new. It was disappointing to find guests that aren't respectful to the property or the neighbours as our other Sykes customers have been charming guests. We trust others will continue to enjoy their stays in Craigmore. Property Owner

  • "Lovely period property with magnificent views out to sea Very comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen."

Only slight criticism would be the sofas in the lounge weren’t very comfortable. Thank you for a very relaxing week in your lovely house

  • "The cottage was brilliant."

We have no complaints at all. What we would like to say is that the access to the cottage is very difficult. At the bottom of the lane where you come out on to the main road is especially difficult. Two way traffic is difficult to negotiate when there are two bends in the road coming in opposite directions. The lane itself is narrow and quite steep in places.

Delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Craigmore. Thanks for the feedback about the access - turning right towards Whitby on the road can be tricky, so you can turn left and then turn round in the car park at the bottom of Lythe Bank. Property Owner

Very well appointed and equipped and the rooms to the front all have the most wonderful views along the beach to Whitby.

  • "A lovely, comfortable house; a home from home."

Marked down slightly for cleanliness as grill and oven hadn’t been cleaned, grill pan full of fat as was one of the other trays. Immediately gave bad impression as one of the first things we wanted to use after our journey. Rest of the house was fine on inspection however. Great beach for fossil hunting and nice relaxed walk into Whitby. Area seems to have very good bus service. Would definitely recommend.

Pleased you enjoyed Craigmore. I appreciate the feedback about the cooker - we have chabged cleaners since which is working much better. Property Owner

  • "Property was wonderful and in an amazing position."

Would absolutely recommend and would book again..but not through Sykes. Called Sykes the day before check out to extend our stay by an extra night. Property owner said this would be ok but Sykes informed me that the housekeeper would need to be contacted but they had no number on file. Nobody got back to me so contacted them again later in the day. Informed me that they didn’t have an answer and would need to check out at 10am if I heard nothing. Checked out as no contact from Sykes. Then 30 minutes later the housekeeper calls me wondering why we aren’t still in the property. Very frustrating and contact from Sykes was just terrible. Owner missed out on a further nights rental and my data (my phone number) seems to be available to anyone. Unfortunate as property was brilliant.

Glad you liked the house so much. The communication from Sykes was not good enough which they acknowledge and I believe compensated you for. Communication has worked well since then. Property Owner

About the location

SANDSEND

Whitby 2.5 miles.

Lying on Yorkshire's spectacular Heritage Coastline, Sandsend is the ideal place for a family holiday with its award winning, wide sweeping beaches, rock pools and dramatic cliffs. Indeed this part of the coastline is known locally as the Dinosaur Coast because of the many fossils found here. Children will enjoy damming the little beck where it crosses the beach to form a freshwater lagoon - great (and safe) for paddling and boating! For the more energetic the village sits on the lovely long distance Cleveland Way Trail, which offers great off-road cycling along the disused coastal railway as well as breathtaking clifftop walks. The National Trust now own the nearby headland, Sandsend Ness, where there is a delightful nature trail in the old quarry pits. A special place offering something for everyone!

Please note: Please advise us, before your stay, if you wish for the super-king-size bed to be left as it is, or unzipped to make a twin.
Note: Property will not be decorated for Christmas
