  • "Low ceiling in attic bedroom means you need to be short Temperature control in shower erratic sudden change from cold to very hot Lighting poor - spot lighting with dimmer switch cast a shadow on stairs No warning tape to indicate step on landing caused me to fall and 2 visits to Ripon minor injuries clinic leaving with splint on right hand wrist."

These are health and safety issues that need to be addressed.

  • "I was disappointed that having reported that the bedroom ceiling lights (4) over the bed area didn't work on arrival ((2) over the staircase did work), the owner changed the switch but still they didn't work."

He said he would get what was needed to fix it, but didn't and appeared to be avoiding us as never came back to explain. The kitchen sink tap is difficult to use and one can get a sudden rush of water. On our last evening we discussed these problems with the lady of the house who was aware of these issues. We found the place very cramped for space, I bumped my head frequently on the low beam across the bedroom ceiling (I am only 5ft 4 inches) because furniture and things you need to reach are back from the beam and one is looking down. I felt it was not up to the standard of Sykes holiday cottages we have used for years.

  • "Disappointed with the size of the property, the photographs flattered the size of the living space which is very compact."

Upstairs bedroom appeared to be a good size but had restricted headroom due to the roof. Kitchen very small with limited space for food preparation and no draining board for drying dishes The property was well equipped for its size but lacked both tea and coffee pots. Property is in good location for town centre and although on a main road, traffic noise was unobtrusive. Off road parking was available a few minutes walk from the house. The shared garden is very pretty and must be lovely in the summer. Hospitality pack was particularly welcome as shops close at 4.00pm on Sundays.

  • "Lovely to find that the property had an oven fitted, listing needs updating on Sykes website."

Unfortunately there was no oven dishes or gloves for us to use which would have been useful to have. The property lacked an information pack, owners very helpful in quickly fixing issues and answering questions, pack would have prevented these questions.

  • "Lovely bijou property and had everything we needed for a short stay."

Very clean The walled garden is beautiful and shared with the owners. Ripon centre is an easy 10 minute walk The sofa wasn't comfortable to sit on for any length of time and is a small 2 seater. The bathroom is compact with not much wiggle room and the staircase is steep and narrow to the bedroom with a lowish ceiling. The property is situated next to a busy main road too, so consideration it can be noisy at certain times if your not used to it (especially with windows open) but the walled garden did make it private. Nothing the owners can do to change these things *except the sofa, but may be useful to know for someone staying. All in all a lovely place to stay .

  • "The owner failed to notify us that there had been a serious problem with the water supply in the area which affected the quality of the water at the cottage."

Following this she ignored all attempts at contact and the matter was only resolved via the Small Claims Court. It is advised that should you encounter a problem, you record what evidence you can. Customer service has perhaps not yet made it to October Cottage.

Many thanks for your feedback. Whilst the property owner was aware of an external issue, they understood that the problem had been resolved which is why you were not made aware prior to your stay. You left the property before we were able to make contact with the property owner and you could not provide evidence so this did make it difficult for us to find an amicable resolution. Where possible, we work with our owners to ensure any issues are resolved during your stay or an alternative resolution is offered. I am sorry that you left the property before we were able to do this. If you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact us. Property Owner

  • "Gorgeous cottage."

Small and compact but ideal for two. Lovely welcome pack of milk, tea, coffee, and a Yorkshire Brack cake. Located behind owners property within their beautiful garden. Plenty of local information in the cottage of things to do and places to visit around the area, and in Ripon itself, which is only a ten minute walk into town. Hosts were non intrusive but there if needed. Plenty of parking space outside of property. We spend three nights at the cottage. The only additional suggestion I have would be the provision of a small ironing board and iron, which would stand nicely in the stairway recess. A slightly softer mattress would have been more comfortable too. Other than that though everything was fine.

  • "October Cottage is small, but very clean & tidy - very well presented."

It is an ideal bolt-hole for two people who are going to take the short walk into the city centre for their meals as there are plenty of good restaurants within a ten minute walk. The walled garden is a lovely spot to sit and unwind after a long day out in the countryside. Lay in bed at night and be lulled off to sleep by the soothing trickle of water into the pond full of Koi just below your window! Owners are very friendly & welcoming. p.s. If birds are your thing, please go to the Thirsk Bird-of-Prey centre - fabulous!

It didn't help that I suffer from a bad back so I found the sofa a little too soft although my wife was fine with this; there was no alternative seating. Overall, we did enjoy our time at October Cottage. Ripon was an easy walk away and we loved the cathedral and walks along the river. Slightly further afield were a number of National Trust properties which were good and Fountains Abbey was spectacular. Don't miss Brimham Rocks if you get the chance. Harrogate and especially Bettys Tea rooms were a treat.

The owners, a lovely friendly couple, had everything you could need for a stay in their cottage. It was very cold outside but the underfloor heating kept it warm and cosy inside. There is also a heater upstairs. During our stay we enjoyed plenty of canal walking and went through the forest to Studley Park. Judith has suggested other walks for next time which is very helpful. We also went to the Curzen cinema, newly refurbished with a restaurant, just a short stroll from the cottage, the food was freshly made and very nice, definitely visit there again. As Ripon sights are all within easy reach of the cottage the only time we used the car was to visit The Black Sheep Brewery, superb food and the beer was exceptional. We had a fabulous week surrounded by beautiful autumn colours. Would love a return visit.

Owners very welcoming with tea, coffee, milk and cake left for arrival, as well as other household essentials, and they were not intrusive but readily available if needed. Cottage not large but perfectly accommodates two with comfortable and nicely decorated furnishings and a beautiful garden to enjoy. Re the area, Ripon market day is Thursday, would recommend the Royal Oak and the Unicorn Hotel, both in Ripon, for meals. Local attractions we visited and enjoyed were; Foutains Abbey and Studley Royal parklands, Brimham Rocks, Bolton Castle (great falconry demonstrations) and RHS Harlow Carr.

  • "Judith, our hostess was extremely nice."

On our arrival there was tea, coffee and more importantly milk in the fridge. She also had left a 'Yorkshire Brack' in the cupboard. The cottage was lovely and everything in the cottage was spotless and the shower was one of the best I've had in any hotel or quest house. There was off street parking for the car which was important as the car was only three weeks old. Even though was had guide books she told us about small things which we may have overlooked as been minor but were important. When I mentioned one of the reasons for my visit was after watching the 'Yorkshire Vet', she arranged with her sister who works for Julian, one of the vets, for me to meet up with him which was really nice. The Yorkshire show was brilliant. The train journey from Pickering to Whitby was nearly ruined for lack of signs on the road and signage for parking. A few people were in the same position but we made it by the skin of our teeth. We mentioned it to the 'volunteers' on the train, who were not very helpful kind of blamed the councils for it, and that maybe we should contact them,. At the end of the day we have enough problems with our councils without sorting out yours!!! Went back to Ripley twice, a most beautiful village. The holiday was fantastic and Yorkshire has a huge amount to offer, clocked up a lot of mileage.
