  • "Great cottage and amazing views."

Was surprised at the garden being so big at the back! The log burner was really nice too. The Royal Hotel great for a drink and food just a short walk away and the Runswick Bay hotel at the top also very nice for food. We had a day on the beach and a trip to Whitby close by. Would definitely book again.

  • "This is an enchanting cottage, in the heart of the old village with uninterrupted views of the Bay - the sunrise was a delight every morning."

It accommodates 6 but there are in fact 7 beds - a comfortable double, a pair of bunk beds (top bunk might be quite claustrophobic, tucked into an alcove) and 3 more singles in the attic room, reached by squeezing past the bunk bed then up a set of paddle steps. The views from the lounge, main and attic bedrooms are outstanding. The main bedroom has a really good shower but there is no shower curtain for the main bathroom (I think this shower may be broken judging by other comments - we didn't try it). The property is tastefully - but perhaps not recently - decorated. Heating for most rooms is with effective electric wall heaters, with the exception of the lounge which has a log burning stove. As this is the only heating in this room I would have thought a more generous ration of logs would be supplied - enough for one evening only - plus paper or firelighters, kindling and matches. As it was we couldn't light a fire until we picked up the necessary. The kitchen is ok but again lacking a couple of basics - we couldn't find any dishwasher tablets, the griddle pan looks like it warped years ago and there's no spatula, for example. The cottage was mostly clean but not spotless - there were cobwebs and dirty crockery, and the woodburner hadn't been cleaned out. We'd love to stay here again and I feel like I should give it more than a "3" but it falls short of a "4"; with a little more attention to detail it'd be a "5". Thanks for the wine and bag of crisps - but a nice touch would have been to have the fire laid and ready to light, with enough fuel for a couple of days at least. Coffee pods for the machine, dishwasher tablets, kitchen roll, cleaning stuff, perhaps a welcome pack / cottage information would all have made a difference. (This is feedback, not criticism; we really do love the cottage).

  • "Absolutely filthy."

cooker top , washer , nothing had been cleaned. I have photographs to prove it. Bedroom window warped and could not be shut at all. room was like a fridge. No instructions or information - despite what owners now claim. Look at previous feedback and you can see nothing has changed. Owners unable or unwilling to deal with problems. god knows how many people have complained about one of the showers not working. A beautiful view but far too expensive for everything else you get. My advice is steer clear and look for another cottage in the village

  • "Overall a great stay, just a little bit of feedback!"

One of the showered didn’t work, there was little info about the house. I had thought there would be parking but no info about it. The kitchen could do with a few more plates/bowls. Overall lovely and aware it has been a busy season so maybe there have been a few breakages. Also unsure it is still necessary for guests to strip their own beds?

  • "As you will know this is a delightful cottage with a spectacular view of the bay."

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. In a spirit of helpfulness and in trying to be constructive I have made suggestions that you might like to consider (or not) as the case may be: 1. We could not find a corkscrew on the first night or at all! We have bought one and donated it to the cottage. Enjoy. 2. As I have said we loved the cottage however we probably spent 3-4 hours cleaning on Thursday. When you get down to it you realise what cleaning has been done and not done. For example only vacuming behind and underneath the settees (particularly the large one) had not been done for some time and was pretty gross. Skirting boards pretty filthy, rug in the sitting room not had a shake outside for a long time. Black dog hairs all over the settee. Not our dog it is a sandy Labrador. A deep clean would not go amiss. 3. We were of course aware the shower in the main bathroom did not work. It would however be a big win if it did. Enough hot water for five adults and one 4 year old coming off the beach needing a shower/bath would be a big bonus. Additionally two showers and one small bath for a 4 year old is about the most you can get out of the system before the water goes cold. Cold showers at 6o'oclock were not appreciated! 4. The particulars make clear the restrictions to the second bedroom on the floor. Clearly designed for children rather than adults. I could add more that might enhance the experience but perhaps that is enough. As I have said we loved our week here and would book again but you might find the above helpful?

  • "We had the best of times."

.. looking out over the bay whilst still in bed from the en suite bedroom window watching the sunrise and the tides flow with the sound of waves shading the sands wet. We were only two so can only speak of the mattress in the en suite bedroom but it was supremely comfortable and the downstairs was cozy and snug with easy access to the tiered private garden at the rear. The village itself was like a mix of Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay with tiny walkways and ginnels so worth an hour or so to look see the interesting and varied structures. The pub hotel was literally three minutes walk away and the café overlooking the bay about five minutes though the cafe was seasonally shut while we were there but we’ve been before and it’s good. The public parking was five minutes’ walk away and loading and unloading was simple because there was a turning circle/loading bay directly outside the property. We will be back!!

  • "The family bathroom shower needs fixing, otherwise with six people using the on suit one it can take sometime to get ready."

The cottage was very cosy and warm but for six adults it would be a little snug, but for us (four adults and two small children) it was fine. Bedding and towels were of good quality and the beds were super comfortable. Parking for two cars (six pounds a day) adds to the cost of the cottage, so we opted to buy a weeks permit from the tourist information in Whitby. This qualified us to free parking in Whitby and various other places. Runswick bay is a stunning place to visit and the views from the cottage are beautiful and the children loved the beach.

  • "Flamingo Cottage is in a superb location."

We loved Runswick Bay, a hidden gem on the Yorkshire coast. Fabulous beach, just minutes away and the views from the cottage were amazing. It was lovely to sit out at the front of the cottage for breakfast and for drinks later! Nice little garden to the back of the cottage. The village has a lovely friendly pub, with good food, just minutes away. Delicious ice cream, at the beach cafe. We enjoyed walks from the cottage, on the coastal path to Staithes and Whitby. We were blessed with very sunny September weather. The cottage was very clean for our arrival. Beds were comfortable, with lovely Egyptian cotton bedlinen. Dishwasher, woodburning stove and the Nespresso machine were an added bonus. However, we did have a couple of problems. Key safe on arrival, was very tricky to open and we were unable to get a response for help from Sykes, or the owner. The second bedroom is just a corridor with a bunk bed, has no space or privacy and the ladder up from this room to 3rd bedroom was very tricky and difficult to negotiate (even for agile twenty somethings!) Despite booking what we thought was a two bathroom, two shower property. The only working shower is in the master bedroom en suite. Great shower for the first 2 people! but then the hot water runs out. No clue as to how to reheat the water for persons 3 and 4, they had to suffer a cold shower, or wash later! The parking situation is a pain, someone has to feed the meter with coins (£6 per day) every morning, because there is no phone signal in the village the text or phone options on the parking machine, do not work. On speaking to other holiday makers, most owners give a resident parking permit with the rental. Apart from this, we had a most wonderful time in Runswick Bay and will definitely return.

  • "Although we enjoyed our holiday due to the wonderful position of the cottage we did notice it was in need of a 'deep clean'."

It was well equipped and the bedrooms were comfortable. Another thing we noticed was there was a number of maintenance jobs unfinished. One of these was the fact that the en-suite bathroom door wouldn't open from the inside (my partner was locked in until I managed to open it from the outside). this could have been serious if anyone was alone in the cottage.

  • "I use Sykes properties regularly and are generally very impressed."

Flamingo cottage had good reviews but I was disappointed. The dishwasher had dirty glasses in it, the couch I had to vac and clean. The dining seat covers I had to clean. There were no instructions for the facilities, and the kitchen bin was kept outside. The bin was small and half full when we arrived. The washing machine was outside in a plastic shed. The kitchen floor was very dirty. The towels had all bleach marks on them, and they were very worn. On a positive note, the setting was fantastic, sea views a good pub and cafe near by. The beach was amazing and very safe for my sons.

  • "This cottage is really too small for 7 people."

There may theoretically be 7 spaces to sleep but access to the attic room is difficult and getting luggage up and down what is in effect a ladder is no easy task. It may suit children but even for only 4 adults this was tight. Similarly a very small kitchen and living space meant no space for boots, coats, backpacks etc for when we were walking. We had a lovely time and the owner was very obliging but I’m pleased there were only 3 of us for most of our stay and sometimes 4. We’d originally looked for a space suitable for 5 - it would have been quite uncomfortable if all 5 of us had been there all of the time. The standard of fittings etc. facilities were very good but basically it was just too small. I have used Sykes on many occasions so this hasn’t put me off, as on the whole I have found listings to be accurate.
