  • "This was our second time staying at the lodge."

It’s a lovely cosy cottage in a perfect location close to the cinder track. On our arrival the cottage was icy cold and the heating wasn’t working! there is a lovely log stove in the cottage however on this visit there wasn’t any fuel to light it, the first time we stayed there was enough coal and logs left as a starter for your first night. So we had to go out and find a place that sold coal, this and the heating not working wasn’t a great start to a holiday in December. After calling Sykes who were very kind and helpful I later got a call from the lovely owner who talked me through how to top up the water to get the boiler working. Once we’d done this it was a much nicer evening for us. We felt that the lodge had been stood empty as it was so very cold and putting the heat on caused a lot of condensation. It was running down the walls, windows and even the kitchen floor was wet when the heating is on or you used the oven. There was a smell of damp the whole time we were there and some of the internal walls are crumbling due to this problem. We had a lovely stay and enjoyed our holiday and would stay again but only in the warmer months.

  • "What a warm, cosy and clean property, every thing you could need on your break, plenty of places to visit in the area and a little further afield, shops and stores for your needs a few minutes away, as always, in this area of the country, locals vary friendly and helpful an added bonus is the local pub a few minutes walk away that also does food, we visited it several times and found the meals very nice and reasonably priced, all in all we had a great weeks stay at the lodge and have already told family and friends how much we enjoyed our stay, this is a place we would definitely return to, once again, thanks for sharing it with us."

Thankyou for your lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your holiday. Hopefully you'll be back for another visit in the future! Property Owner

  • "I felt the cottage was not dog friendly because the neighbours started complaining within an hour of us being there because the dogs where playing after a long 5hr car journey with breaks."

I feel that they would have been the same if I had small children with me. I then felt on egg shells the whole time and wouldn't use the garden, was worried the while time that my autistic child would have a meltdown and wanted to keep the dogs separated in case they wanted to play. He continued to complain the whole time. I also wanted to wash the towels and the washing machine was so dirty that I had to clean it 1st but even after that the towels smelled so bad that they couldn't be used again. On the night we arrived we put the kitchen tap on and the pressure forced the tap off and we had to quickly turn off the water and we repaired this ourself, luckily that was just an easy repair of screwing it back on. The one plus was the beds, they were so comfortable and the best that I have ever had in holiday accommodation before.

The majority of our bookings are from people with dogs. Not once in all the time we've had the cottage have we ever had a complaint from the neighbours about a guest. They are lovely people who wouldn't have complained without good cause. We were informed your dogs were constantly barking 24 hours a day the whole time you were there. I'm sure this would have driven a Saint mad! Property Owner

The local pub was friendly and the food good with sensible prices. Very dog friendly too, so much so that our two fluffy friends dragged us in most nights! You can walk into Whitby on the Cinder Track, or drive in less than 5 minutes. Great base for exploring the area.

  • "We had a lovely stay at the lodge."

Its a great location from whitby and surrounding areas. We walked the cinder track or drove about easily. There is also a bus not too far from the house travelling from Middlesbrough to Scarborough. We ate at the windmill one night and would definitely recommend. We wish we'd gone sooner. The house is great, set back from the road. I've never seen our anxious dog so relaxed. The house was well equipped, we used the washing machine and had a maiden to dry clothes. I would say the kitchen wasn't as clean as expected. Notes say to empty cupboards and it looks like this was trusted to be done however still old food items and stains in cupboard. We rewashed the cutlery as had food stains (possibly from the dishwasher, we dont have one at home so just used the sink) and the cooker and microwave had dried food stuck to them. As a dog friendly property i appreciate it may be harder to keep on top of the hairs etc. Our dog doesn't malt and the rug in the living room had alot of dog hair left behind. We were out throughout the day staying busy and everybody's standard of cleanliness is different. I would still recommend the lodge to stay due to the great location.

The cottage was comfortable and within 10 minutes driving for all the local resorts (Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc) The local pub is 2 minutes walk, is welcoming, serves good food and is dog friendly. Most pubs and eating places were. Great for us for a short break and would be an excellent base for anyone wanting to visit this area from further away.

Ideal location with a great little pub in walking distance, a great childrens playground and a lovely walk through the woodland and along the cinder track. The cottage was cosy and the log burner was a treat on cold October evenings. Daughter enjoyed finding the mice around the house. Thanks

  • "The Lodge was a really comfortable cottage for us to stay in."

There were 3 adults plus our Labrador sharing the space for 4 nights. Such a great location for walking as the Cinder Track is just across the road. The local pub is a bonus, very friendly and serves great food. We had a fabulous few days enhanced by lovely weather with a cosy cottage to return to after long walks along the coast. No problem parking in the village unlike some of the cottages we considered in Whitby!

Location is ideal as we do alot of walking. Beds were comfy . My husband bearing in mind is 58 loved looking for the mice. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay . Only thing was a slug trail on the rug in the living room but we didn't mind that you are in the countryside. Would highly recommend

Thankyou for your kind review. We're pleased to see that your husband enjoyed hunting for the little wooden mice, we did originally add them for the children to find but it seems to be that the adults enjoy it just as much. We hope you'll return for another visit to the lodge soon! Property Owner

Had most of the things you would need for a week away with small children. Only negatives for us personally were the mattresses being super firm and when we arrived it hadn't been cleaned properly with clumps of white dog hair in the living room all over the rug and floor. Not ideal when you have young children picking it up. Other than that it ticked the boxes for everything you would need.

However the central heating would not work and no wood provided for the log burner. Fortunately we were able to buy some wood . The oven grill had not been cleaned after it’s last use. The towels particularly for one of us were inadequate. No bath towel. I am sure these things can be addressed but I felt they needed mentioning. Re the central heating there were no instructions which would have been helpful.

So sorry to read you had a few problems with your stay. Sykes customer services would have been glad to help with the heating problem it's a shame you didn't call them. We hope If you return you'll find everything to your satisfaction. Property Owner
