Beech Cottage is an annexe of a farmhouse on a working farm. It consists of a single downstairs room that includes a kitchen, complete with cooker, microwave and fridge, and an upstairs bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom contains a bath and spacious shower. Towels, bathrobes, crockery and cutlery are provided, but not soap or toilet roll. There is no T.V. in the bedroom, but there is a small one downstairs. The bed is comfortable and extra blankets are available if you have need of them. Wi-fi is available and worked well. The property is close to York and within driving distance of various attractions such as Flamingoland Resort, and is very reasonably priced – we found it to be cheaper than a Travelodge (and much nicer). If you’re planning to stay here you should probably be aware that, as it’s on a farm in the middle of the countryside, you may have some little visitors – we had a mouse living with us for a few days, and several huge spiders. This didn’t bother us, but if you don’t like sharing your space with critters, this might not be the place for you.

About the location

STAMFORD BRIDGE

York 8.5 miles.

Stamford Bridge, as its name suggests, was a fording point over the River Derwent for a Roman settlement. Nowadays, it is a village with a selection of shops and restaurants and is notable for a renovated railway viaduct, which is now used as a cycle and public footpath. The village is well known as the site of the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25th September 1066, which marked the end of the Viking era in Britain. Within easy reach are the pretty Yorkshire market towns of Malton, Beverley and Driffield and within an hour’s drive is the unspoilt coastal resort of Filey with open beaches and the nearby RSPB nature reserve at Bempton.
