The cottage is lovely - fitted out with good quality furnishings and is spacious the garden and hot tub are magnificent i doubt we'd return tho as we found off-putting: half a fire lighter no kindling even tho it says all fuel and power included no sugar no coffee no welcome bottle of milk 2 dishwasher tablets worn out sponge for washing up no foil, etc in others words remember to bring everything we were warned in other reviews about this parsimony but regretfully ignored that info

Thank you for your feedback we take on board your comments and have now requested Sykes to edit our property description, with regard to fuel, to read "fuel and power included and starter pack for the wood burning stove with additional logs available to purchase on site". Hopefully this will resolve any ambiguity. The starter pack comprises of a made up fire (with a fire lighter, kindling and a log) ready for you to light on your arrival and approx 4KG of additional logs. May I also apologise for the cleaning cupboard not being restocked for your visit. Had you have made us aware of this shortfall when we spoke during your stay we would have been more than willing to provide more dishwasher tablets and a new sponge. Being a self catering accommodation we do not provide any food or beverages so please do remember to bring your own. Above all always advise your hosts of any issues while you are there, we are dedicated in making your holiday as enjoyable as possible given the opportunity. Property Owner

  • "Lovely little cottage."

Lush location. Hot tub was fabulous added extra. Had a lovely time celebrating my birthday and valentines. Only downside was the dog poo all over the lane on the way to the parking spot. Difficult to avoid with a child and had to drive over to get out. Had been picked up later but with a small child we were up and out early. Would return and can’t fault the actual cottage

We are very pleased to hear you had an enjoyable stay despite the dog poo on the public footpaths around the property. I do routinely clean this up myself when spotted, unfortunately I spent most of your stay in A&E, however, as you noticed, I did clean it up immediately upon my return. Negating any further trips to hospital I will endeavour to keep the footpaths as poop free as possible should you choose to return Property Owner

Option to buy more logs on site rather than having to go back out for a 10 minute drive would have been handy.. Would recommend and book again.

  • "The reason for rating of not recommending this place, is purely based on the fact they tried to charge us an extra £45 because we didn't hoover the property and bleach the bath when we left."

We got photos sent to us, of a fly squatter not in the cupboard, the ironing board left out, and a hoola hoop on the floor. Absolute ludicrous esp when we had been so laid back about the bath leaking through through the roof. If you are prepared to deep clean the property upon leaving, then I'd highly recommend as its a cosy cottage in a lovely village, hottub is brilliant and you are only half an hours drive to Scarborough. We had a lovely stay with our children until we got a phonecall and email with the above information in it. We personally won't be back due to this reason only

It was very clean, warm (it was snowing and frosty outside) and had everything we wanted. The hot tub was fantastic especially as it was situated in a private garden next to an old stone wall that had a snow on it. We put candles in the snow and had a very romantic and beautiful setting in a warm and clean hot tub. The Peacock, a local pub just short stroll away, was very friendly with a lovely landlady and another warm fire and a good choice of drinks too. The places we visited and the relaxing stay really made our long weekend a fantastic break that we all enjoyed. We are hoping to return and highly recommend to everyone.

Ideal base for discovering the area from Maldon to York or Scarborough. The cottage was impeccable and had everything you would need. I would suggest bringing the essentials bread milk coffee etc as the nearest shop was 7-9 miles away. This didn't really impact out stay as we were out most of the time. Great places to eat in the surrounding areas. Would definitely recommend this cottage for couples. Ps the log fire is an added bonus in colder weather we however didn't use it as the cottage was warm enough.

However I was disappointed to find that such good quality pillows had no protectors on them. Showering was also an issue, I tried using both shower heads but encountered the same problem with having to clear up a pool of water from floor. Whilst the bathroom is lovely it was not very serviceable due to the issue.

We use machine washable pillows eliminating the need for protectors. The shower handsets have now been replaced with a fixed shower head which seems to have resolved the problem of the wet floor. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay and base for the week."

The hot tub was great even in the rain! Local pub the Peacock was very welcoming and Coachman served great food. Only drawbacks were extremely noisy and very busy main road outside the property, leaking bathroom window when it rains, leaking shower that drips over the floor making a puddle of water, and very tight parking space if you have a large car.

The roof above the bathroom window has now been repaired hopefully no more leaks. We have replaced the shower handset with a fixed shower head which appears to have resolved the issue of water getting on the bathroom floor. The allocated parking space is 2.75m x 6m (9ft x 20ft) if your vehicle is too large for this space there is ample on road parking directly outside the property or alternatively on one of the side streets, you can normally find safe parking outside the village hall approx 100 meters down the road. • "No allocated parking - and directly on a very busy main road."

Interior was clean but the bathroom needs altering. The bath is mounted on a tiled plinth and as its a roll top version, so it is very high of the floor - making getting in and for a shower or bath out very difficult. There are no handles or anything to hold onto when getting in or out in a confined space. I would even class it as quite dangerous for anyone with mobility issues.

Bathroom mobility aids IE bath stool, repositionable grab handles and non slip bath mat are provided at this property. These are located in the bathroom cupboard and available for use as required for guest own personal mobility needs. 20/06/23 this property now has an allocated off road parking space. Property Owner

  • "On arrival we were disappointed to find that the cottage is on a busy A road into Scarborough."

The noise of traffic, which included large lorries and cars whizzing past at speed (supposedly on a 30mph road) was relentless, even in the early hours. I really struggled to sleep. Because the weather was hot we needed the windows open slightly, but even with them closed it w2as noisy. Unfortunately, it did not lend to a relaxing peaceful stay. If I had known about this I would not have booked this particular cottage! There is also no parking, and had to park at the local village hall down the road. The property is quite overlooked by the next door neighbour (who luckily seemed to be away while we were there), so the hot tub is not very private. The only view is a stone wall and neighbours gardens. It was also a little inconvenient having to walk wet through the house to go to toilet upstairs. The bathroom looked lovely, but was not really user friendly, especially if youre not very tall or have mobility problems, as it was very high to climb into the shower. Sorry to be so negative, but we were quite disappointed with the noisy location. TBH we were glad to get back home to our peaceful home, and am looking forward to a good night's sleep and to hear the birds singing in the morning!

So sorry to hear you were disappointed to find the cottage located on an A road. However the cottages exact position is indicated on a large map on our web site. We are justifiably surprised to hear off road parking, views secluded garden and ground floor/outdoor toilet were expected even though these were not featured on our website. The Victorian roll top bath which caused an issue during your stay is clearly shown in our photographs. We have taken great care to provide an informative and genuine description of the property and it's facilities and endeavor to fulfill all of our guests expectations, however in order to prevent disappointment such as this it is imperative guests read and understand the property description before selecting the most suitable for their personal needs. Sykes Cottages are available and keen to help in enquiries regarding specific features of all there properties, should you have specific requirements which are not clear on our website. On road parking is available, as described on our website, directly outside the property, however, for the safety of guests vehicles we recommend unloading next to the cottage then parking on one of the less busy side streets. And please be respectful if refused permission to park on our neighbours private parking spaces. Property Owner

Quiet, comfortable and cosy cottage with good facilities overall. Hot tub was nice and private (shame we didnt get to make the most of it with kids). Lovely stay would visit again. A Few feedback points would be parking situation on an A road is not ideal with children as busy during the day. WiFi situation could be improved as very weak signal upstairs. The hot tub was great and we made good use of it over our 2 day stay. Unfortunately, the master bedroom is in real need of a new mattress. The huge dip in the middle makes it very uncomfortable when 2 people are sleeping in the bed. It would have also been good if we could have logged into our Prime account on the TV to stream a film in the evening but unfortunately the WiFi settings in the cottage do not allow for any streaming which was a real shame.
