“I have stayed in a number of Sykes Cottages and they are all great but The Granary must be high in the top league.”

It is immaculately clean and tastefully furnished, with every commodity you could possibly think of. A complimentary bottle of wine was a thoughtful touch, My first thought on walking in was: I could happily live here. I was looking for peace and quiet to do some writing and I was delighted by the word count. It was cosy and warm, though I was lucky with the weather in mid-February and turned the radiators down (or off) during the day and up again in the evenings. The principal delight was the large, superbly equipped, kitchen with its acres of work surfaces. This made cooking a pleasure and it was easy to keep clean. It actually proved to be a good place to work - and in the evenings I relaxed in the comfortable sitting room. The bed was big and comfortable. Harrogate is a short drive away, as are good supermarkets. You can go for tea at Betty's in Harrogate or enjoy Timothy Taylor's Landlord Ale in Spofforth - 4 minutes away - after visiting the castle.
