  • "Very disappointed in this property."

It's not 'close to the harbour' but at the top of village near turn off from A174. Position on map shown online inaccurate. To the rear of house there are views of fields but also a large industrial mining plant. Not shown in online photo. No photo of front of house. In my opinion Not a 4 star house. There are many negative comments already online and they're valid. Decided to return to the comfort of our own home, 3 hours after arriving. Sykes unhelpful, would not provide an alternative unless I paid again. Won't be booking again with Sykes.

  • "Great place to stay, cottage was very clean and tidy and were grateful for the welcome pack of Prosecco, crisps, biscuits and chocolate buttons!"

! Great location as only a 10 minute walk to Staithes harbour and good pub meals at the Cod and Lobster. Only issue we had was the very tight car parking at the back of the property on the lane, no other space available for another car other than a 30 mins stay outside the front as these were for permit holders. Suggestion would be to get a permit for guests.

  • "We was really disappointed that there was next to no live TV available due to a fire at the main TV mast that happened some 8 weeks or so ago before our arrival."

Despite this being a known issue that live TV would not be available we a not made aware. Indeed we was not made aware of this until we phoned to report this as an issue that we was not getting any live TV pictures. While many people may feel that a week without TV is OK, we do not, particularly when a service is clearly advertised. We shall be taking this up directly with Sykes as we feel it spoiled our holiday and as such we should be entailed to a discount.

  • "Spent a very relaxing week at this comfy cottage."

Well placed for coastal walks, bus services, pubs and other local amenities. Our travels didn't extend far, just between Saltburn and Robin Hood's Bay, never more than a 30-min car journey or short bus trip and we also made it to Goathland on the steam train. The accommodation was perfect and unexpectedly quiet (ignore other comments about the fish & chip shop as it closes at 8.30pm). Batteries fully recharged, we would definitely return.

  • "Comfortable but certainly not 4 star."

If you wish to sit at a rusty table and chairs in a pebbled yard overlooking dustbins, lock up garages and next doors oil tank this is the place for you. A little bit more T L C and thought needs to be given to this property to make it 4 star. Examples are - A blind most certainly needed in front bedroom as totally not private as overlooks chip shop. No mirror in middle bedroom and no waste paper bins in any bedroom. As the shower is over the bath there was no bath mat to stand on which made it very dangerous to stand in bath and when getting in and out. Unable to locate any table mats or table cloth in dining area. No extractor fan in kitchen so any cooking set of fire alarm especially as oven was old and very dirty and greasy. Despite these shortfalls, we had a good holiday with good weather and loved Staithes and Runswick Bay especially. Good meals at the Captain Cook as unable to get into other pubs until mid October. Would return to Staithes but not to Benjamins Cottage

  • "As per a previous occupant, the creaking floorboards and stairs, jammed doors were annoying."

Particularly the boards in the living room which moved a lot under your feet and was quite worrying. In addition, the freezer/fridge was in a cupboard under the stairs with jammed cupboard door about 15 ft from the kitchen.Even making a cup of tea was a chore. The table and chairs outside were rusty and unfit for use. However, the plus side is the superb fish and chip shop opposite, the position of the cottage near the main road, 200 yds from the Captain Cook Inn and 10 minutes from the wonderful harbour. We enjoyed our stay but be aware of the drawbacks.

All facilities that you need, extremely clean, welcome basket is a beautiful touch. The only downside for us is we found the beds and pillows to be uncomfortable, this is a small problem that I am sure can be easily rectified. Overall a great value for money, beautiful cottage, perfect for exploring and short stays.

  • "The cottage had the creakiest floors & stairs imaginable!"

Every step anyone took anywhere in the cottage could be heard and it became quite wearing by the end of the week. The downstairs bathroom was damp, despite us opening the window at every opportunity. Overall we wouldn’t recommend Benjamins’s cottage for a family or anyone who might need to use the toilet during the night.

  • "The cottage was well located in the top village."

The parking space was useful if tight. The kitchen needs bigger saucepans and more sharp knives. The views from the back of Boulby Cliffs are beautiful. The fish and chip shop at the front closed at 7pm and so caused no disturbance. The house info had some good walks. A good place to stay.

  • "Parking. We took two cars, the cottage has space for one car only at the rear."

That worked well, however the other car had to be parked on a nearby road which is where the owner had advised. The owner said that they had never had any problems parking there but we did. Damage was caused to this car which was not accidental, but deliberate. This marred the holiday. Weather could have been better but nothing any one can do about that.

Great location and spotlessly clean. Beautifully presented throughout and the owner has thought of everything you could need for a relaxing break. Bonus of a parking space at the back. The neighbours are so friendly I could have happily moved in. I stayed here with my elderly mum and aunt and my 12 week old son and we all loved it! Baby was so relaxed! The food at both the chip shop opposite and the captain cook inn was delicious and would definitely recommend

  • "The cottage was welcoming and beautifully furnished."

The location is very quiet and great for exploring locally. Fish and chip shop is directly across the road. Having Netflix and Prime video an absolute boon and not something I've ever had in a holiday home. Welcome pack was nice - I would have been happy with a pint of milk and a loaf of bread so the wine and biscuits were more than expected. I did drop and lose the keys outside when I arrived and the owner kindly arranged for her cleaner to bring me a set of spares which I was very very grateful for. However, it's worth mentioning that the cottage does seem to be very hot or very cold - the curtains cover the radiator and absorb a lot of the heat so I folded them up which seemed to help. The downstairs bathroom was fine but it was very cold in there whatever time of day. The blind in the lounge is broken so it is permanently dark meaning you have to have it up during the day which is not very private given that the cottage opens directly on to the street. Not sure if the owner is aware of this and I think I was more aware of it because I was a woman on my own, it wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't been alone. There is a patch of damp in the front bedroom which is spreading from the corner across the window and down the side wall. It is beginning to look black and the paint is bubbling and starting to peel off. I think this may have been mentioned in a previous post. It's not a problem to sleep in the room but it is a bit unsightly and clearly there is a damp problem which needs fixing. When I arrived it was raining and very windy - the back ginnel where you park is muddy and completely unlit and twice I tripped over the small step into the garden because I couldn't see a thing. Finally used my phone torch but it wasn't ideal trying to work the key safe holding a torch and instructions. There is a light attached to the building but it never came on and again I'm not sure if anyone is aware of this because the cleaner is probably there in the daytime. These are minor points and easily fixed but the cottage is so beautifully decorated it seems a shame to let it down with a broken blind, a non working light and a small damp patch. I would definitely come back as I felt very safe and I loved the cottage and the location is brilliant.

Great cottage with the advantage of off street parking which was great. • "The house was very well presented to a high standard & the welcome hamper a lovely touch."

It’s situated in a good location for exploring the area. The only issues we had were with the quality of the mattress on the king size bed, we found it very uncomfortable & although the overall cleanliness of the house was excellent, there were cobwebs on some lights & some paint peeling off the walls. I would also recommend taking a stair gate if you have little ones as the stairs are very steep. Overall we were impressed with the accommodation.

  • "Nice little place, however would prefer to go there when bit warmer as we had issue with the heating."

The hive thermostat didn't work when we arrived. In the info left for us it said that the owner controls it. Next morning nothing had changed so I text the lady it turned out the battery run out. Lucky I had spare. After while the heating start working but the temperature was set so high so for change was too hot. Tried to regulate it but find the hive system not very cooperative. The day we were going back home find out the brand new batteries already run out even that we stayed just for long weekend. I think it was something wrong with it. The owner was very nice and worked out the problem very quickly and offer extra bottle of wine. However I was so cold that I couldn't bother to have a shower on the day we were going back. The house could fit five guests but I found that there is not enough plates for so many people and saucepans are far to small if you would like to cook yourself. Also having bathroom downstairs not ideal but it was OK for a few days. Location very good, this little village is very beautiful. Personally prefer it more then Whitby, where is much busier. On the rainy day you can stay in and watch a film or good program as they have a good selection from Netflix and Prime.

Spoke to the owner prior to going and she said we could go earlier as there wasn’t anybody in before us. I had family come over for fish and chips which where delicious! Go to excelsior fish shop directly opposite. Furnishing where lovely and made it so cosy. The log burner was a good extra too! Especially as it was very cold and windy outside. The only downsides where the cleanliness and other little things. The cottage is advertised as sleeps 5, only two of us stayed but I had family over for tea, there was only 4 dinner plates, some of which are chipped. Some cutlery also missing. It is a self catering cottage and we went to cook, couldn’t find the trays but then looked inside the oven, they where there but covered in food left by the last people?? Also the oven needs a very good clean inside urgently, it smells when cooking. Just the little things you expect when you pay to go somewhere. We also had our dog with us, it looked like the cleaner had tipped something into the drain outside but missed it and was al over the gravel, didn’t notice it until found out dog licking it. Obviously this could of been worse if he had got ill but just wanted you to be aware if other dogs are staying there.Overall we loved the cottage and definitely would go back again if it was guaranteed to be clean.

Very warm, cozy and comfortable. A lovely welcome basket awaited us on arrival and was much appreciated....lovely touch. The bedrooms are all a good size and the beds comfortable. It’s perfectly situated for a walk down into Staithes itself which is really pretty and has some lovely little shops, pubs and cafes. Albeit the hill is a little steep so maybe wouldn’t suit anyone with walking difficulties. For those who do like walking you are up onto the Cleveland Way in 10 minutes or so and there are some stunning views. Local shop, pub, cafe and fish shop all on the doorstep. I would definitely stay here again.

A stay here will definitely test your fitness level. The cottage itself is lovely, the owner had left a welcome hamper and logs for the burner. My only slight criticism is that the bathroom is situated off the kitchen so is rather inconvenient if you need to get up during the night but that’s just me being picky - I’d throughly recommend Benjamins Cottage for a stay in Staithes.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
