Bedding was white and very clean (better than in the photos). Only complaint was I could hear a dripping noise in the main bedroom all night from the boiler below. I put some white noise on my phone which helped. We really enjoyed our stay. Brilliant location in Staithes!

Cons: LOUNGE - Tired, lounge furniture and soft furnishings (cushions, throws etc). - In much need of decorating. KITCHEN - No hand soap (basic requirement) - Only two wine glasses, we had to borrow two more form the pub (basic requirement). - No salt and pepper (basic requirement) - No large saucepan. - No cleaning fluid. - No kitchen roll. BATHROOM - No hand soap (basic requirement). - Shower - although hot, the flo was weak. ATTIC BEDROOM - Bedside light on left-hand-side not working. FIRST FLOOR BEDROOM - Single bed on right, mattress needs replacing, as lost all firmness. HALL/STAIRWAYS - All carpets need cleaning. -------------------------------------------- Pros: - Great location. - Nice, clean bathroom - Great working fireplace - Warm - when storage heaters up and running. - Nice attic bedroom I would stay there again if all my points were addressed.

  • "Directions to the cottage were incorrect as the gift shop which was previously opposite the property had moved."

We had a lovely holiday in the wonderful Staithes which we were familiar with from when we lived in the north east.. The cottage is a charming old building on the High Street but this does mean that the bathroom is two flights of narrow, steep stairs below the main bedroom and (if you are 6ft 2) one of those flights has limited headroom. Make sure you bring everything you need as there is no welcome pack etc.

  • "We admittedly forgot to contact the owners 48 hours prior to our arrival so that was down to us but the directions were confusing at best, inaccurate at worst."

We were told it was opposite a gift shop, it turned out to be 100 yards away. I also think the owners should make it abundantly clear this accommodation is totally unsuitable for any one who has the slightest problem with walking up multiple steps or inclines, .. the car park is half a mile away up a very steep incline. Having said all that the accommodation it's self is "compact" but clean and comfortable.

We were so happy and comfortable in this light filled, charming house. Super clean, everything we needed in the kitchen for cooking, comfy beds and living room too. We loved watching the world go by on the little bench outside and meeting other residents and holiday makers. It is a really friendly place and the location by the sea was perfect for the kids to have a bit of independence too. Easy costal bus to Whitby etc and Cleveland Way walk. We loved it!

  • "Our stay at Broomhill View was a bit of a mixed bag, tbh."

Things we liked: location, cleanliness of the property, helpful instructions on managing our stay and checking out of the property. We also loved the pictures and photos of local scenes in the property. Things we disliked: no corkscrew or hairdryer - not that we could find anyway, and no mention of the need to bring same with us; the bed was uncomfortable and there was no place for 2 adults and 2 x 12 year olds to eat together other than in front of the telly. And whilst we realised that the bathroom was on the ground floor when we booked, coming down 2 flights of stairs to use the bathroom in the night was a bit of a chore. I think that this might suit other holidaymakers better as it's a charming, little cottage in a prime location but there were a few things noted above that left us with some grumbles.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad that there were many things that you enjoyed about your stay. We do not advertise that we have a hairdryer but a corkscrew should be available for your use. Unfortunately sometimes things go astray and can only be replaced when we are notified. We are sorry you found our bed uncomfortable and appreciate that memory foam mattresses do not suit everyone. Whilst our kitchen is small there is sufficient space around the breakfast bar for four people, we have stayed ourselves with our grown up children many times. Broomhill View is a small fisherman’s cottage and the description and photographs do show this clearly. Property Owner

The cottage is in a great location on the High Street so great to explore straight from your door. We parked on the top car park at the top of the High Street(a steep walk so not ideal for people with mobility issues) which was great value and was able to pull the car up outside to unload the car when we checked in. The cottage was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. We took our own fire wood to light the fire in the evening and this was lovely. We would highly recommend Broomhill View and will definitely come back and stay again.

Perfect for two adults and ideally placed right on the high street with all amenities required for a short stay. If the storage heaters are used correctly (instructions at the cottage) plenty warm enough and fuel can also be purchased locally for the open fire which is in excellent order / well kept. The walk to the car park is steep...nature of the village and part of the charm. Well equipped and spotless.

Many thanks for your kind feedback, as returning guests you clearly enjoy the beautiful village of Staithes. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is cold and draughty."

This is exacerbated by the fact that when you check in the heating is set on minimum and there is no immediate hot water either. This really does not make the cottage very welcoming. We appreciate that we are in a fuel crisis and costs are high but when you know guests are arriving on a cold December evening it is not acceptable to arrive to a very cold house. I accept that there are 2 electric heaters that can be used to help warm the house but these were inadequate and made very little difference despite them being in constant use throughout our stay. The type of heating for the house is also inadequate and at no point, despite carefully following the instructions, did we feel warm. The heater in the kitchen didn’t work. Added to this, there is a real fire which I would have expected, given that the heating was poor, the first basket of firewood to be free and then any additional wood charged. This is what we have experienced when we have stayed in other accommodation. However this was not the case and a charge was in place for any. We did eventually purchase some wood from a local supermarket and although the fire was nice the draughts remained. We accept this is an old cottage but draught excluders should be considered. We have stayed in other cottages in Staithes and not had this issue as they have been warm and cosy. The 5pm check in is the latest we have ever experienced. If there was a late check out I could understand that but checkout is the fairly standard 10am so the check in time does not make sense. The statement on the booking that early check ins and late check outs are not accepted along with ‘must not do’ instructions around the house and from Sykes cottages just gives a feeling of a lack of any personal touch to this holiday when compared with other companies/owners we have used. As you can see we are quite disappointed.

Thank you for your feedback, however please note the feedback following yours from our returning guests who had taken the time to read fully the instructions for the storage heaters. We do not live locally and so our advert makes it clear that we are unable to supply fuel for the fire. We do have a draught excluder for the front door as we know that the nature and age of the building requires this. With regard to our check in time I’m afraid this is governed by our housekeeper who looks after other properties too, currently we are regrettably unable to bring this forward. We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay, we have several returning guests who visit during the colder months who all enjoy Broomhill View. Property Owner

  • "Second time staying here and I was alittle disappointed."

Kitchen was not equipped for 4 guests, only 1 dinner plate so we had to use saucers to eat from. Only 2 folks, 2 knives, 2 spoons, no cups. Heating broken in kitchen so it was super cold. Rubbish in master bedroom bin, double bed squeaky everytime you move and cleaning wasn’t as clean as first visit. I’m sorry but we won’t be rebooking. Great location though. Thank you.

We were obviously confused and concerned to receive your feedback having had the cottage checked prior to your arrival and following your departure. However, your feedback is simply false as in fact when you left there were 7 dinner plates, 8 dessert plates, 8 bowls, 6 mugs and sufficient cutlery for up to six people. We do not own any saucers. The heater works perfectly well in the kitchen as it has for previous and subsequent guests. If the cottage was as you described when you arrived it is inconceivable that you would not have contacted us to report your findings immediately. We welcome constructive feedback and any opportunity to improve but on this occasion we are at a complete loss as to why these comments have been made. Property Owner

  • "Thanks for a lovely week."

The cottage is lovely and quaint, but is very small and may not suit four adults. There isn't much room to store food in the kitchen, so don't do a big shop! There was no corkscrew, but a quick visit to the Royal George, who were happy to help, sorted that problem! We often had to move people off the bench when we wanted to use it, and it was quite intrusive- it sounded like they were with us in the front room, so privacy could be an issue. That's not down to the cottage or the owners though, and a little assertiveness sorted it. Some great rock pooling and fossil hunting to be had on the beach. We used the Cow Bar free car park (which was a bonus) as the Bank Top one was very full, and you need the RinGo app or cash to use it.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed the village and Broomhill View. **Just a note for future guests that the Cowbar car park is no longer free.** Property Owner

We are naturally disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay at Broomhill View and whilst we would always welcome the opportunity to improve where we can, the comments in your feedback are inaccurate. On arrival it was spotlessly clean, had all the facilities needed and was comfortable. The beds were soooo comfy and warm. Only two minutes from the beach which is perfect and had a sea view from the main bedroom. My only negative comment would be that due to the storage heaters we were chilly in the evening on Saturday. The weather is unseasonably cool at the moment, and there were small radiators that could’ve been used but I didn’t find the downstairs one until the next day when I hoovered before we left. My mistake, and it’s not a criticism of the Cottage, just a comment. We would definitely look to return to this pretty and quaint cottage.

Lovely cottage. Your blurb says minimal mobile signal. NO mobile signal (either with 02 or EE at cottage!!) Perhaps others should be aware - although this didn’t trouble us unduly!! Also the first flight of stairs has a low head height at one step. There is a plaque which says ‘mind your head’ but husband (6 ft) only took note after hitting his head once or twice!! Due to Covid-19 restrictions would advise incoming guests to book nearby pubs for evening meals (if their idea is not to cook) as soon as they have booked cottage as Cod and Lobster (excellent pub on seafront) already booked, for example, until end November now! They do accept walk ins but it’s hit and miss if there’s an available table inside or out.

Thank you for your feedback. Storage heaters are simple and effective. If used correctly they provide more than adequate heating for the property. There is also an open fire and a portable oil filled radiator that guests can use if they wish to during colder periods. Thank you for your feedback and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday. About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
