"Welcoming owners, comfy, beautifully clean, warm and inviting with our basket of goodies."
Always good to arrive at Mulgrave Cottage and sad to leave.
"We have stayed at one other property at this destination previously and we were delighted by the quality of the property and the welcome given to us by the owners."
The property we stayed at this time was disability friendly which was required by one of our party. The facilities at this property are first class for disabled people. The owners were there for our arrival to make sure the facilities were what was required, nothing was too much trouble for them. This is the best property our disabled friend has stayed at which is testimony to the facilities provided. Absolutely first class in all respects and I can't recommend it highly enough.
"We arrived late due to car problems."
. Elaine ( owner) took in our shopping which was really kind.
Heating didn't work ( Hot water did) although they did try and fix it.....as an alternative, they provided heaters for us so there was no issue. Property is a warm property so we were very cosy.
Lovely location... would recommend a stay. Owners very very friendly. No issues.
"Loved the cottage and the owner, very friendly, loved the idea of “what3words ..."
Loved the cottage and the owner, very friendly, loved the idea of “what3words address” really helpful, especially for hard to find places, although this was pretty easy, heating funny controls, tv was a problem but we lived with it, as we understood the problems
"A very spacious cottage with really good facilities for any disabled guests, large wet room and roomy downstairs bedroom, two more great size bedrooms upstairs, ideally placed for lots of local beauty spots Whitby, Robin Hoods bay, Staithes, Sandsend, Thirsk and Pickering."
Hosts are very helpful with prompt attention if needed. Wouldnt hesitate to go back here or to recommend to other visitors.A great cottage , lovely village a real gem and a credit to Mr and Mrs Welford. A definate five star review from our party.
Within 20 mins of several beaches. Friendly helpful owners and I felt immediately relaxed in the cottage.
"Mulgrave Cottage is beautifully presented and well equipped."
It is in a lovely location, close to many of the lovely bays and open countryside.
The owners are very friendly and helpful.
We would not hesitate to visit this property again.
"I think that this cottage, based on location, should be a much higher star."
We had a fabulous stay here, there were 6 adults and we fitted in beautifully, albeit that my husband and I were in single beds but that was our choice; just the family being together after this dreadful pandemic was well worth it. There was still plenty of room. The cottage was extremely clean and tidy and it was the best equipped cottage that we have stayed in for a very long time.
The location is amazing, lovely walks in every direction from the cottage and you can easily get into Staithes within 10 minutes walk up and down steep Hills and then onto the Cleveland Way. There is a nice little pub just a few yards from the cottage.
We walked the Cleveland Way to Port Mulgrave and Runswick Bay and it was absolutely beautiful. We also explored the local walks from the cottage through the woods and the dales which were lovely. We had trips to Whitby and Saltburn, we had the best Fish and Chips ever in Saltburn at Oscars on the sea front. We ate out in the little court yard in the sunshine most evenings which was lovely and peaceful.
The owners were very welcoming, always checking that everything was okay for us.
"A lovely, well appointed cottage in a great location."
The host was friendly and more than helpful. We would definitely stay here again and recommend to family and friends.
"The holiday cottage was lovely and welcoming, and the owners (and other people in the village) went out of their way to make us feel welcome, including showing us round the farm, and letting the children see their animals."
The area is beautiful, with gorgeous beaches, friendly locals and good food. We will definitely visit again.
"We stayed for 3 nights in October."
On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful village and its proximity to Staithes. The place seemed clean and smelled of bleach, which, considering covid, was a good thing. We opted not to use the downstairs bedroom so it was not made up. We did use the ensuite downstairs as a toilet however. There was only 4 of us, 2 adults and our children, but had there been 6 of us, in my view it would have been overcrowded. I understand that the downstairs bedroom is very much intended for a less able person, but has made the living and kitchen area too small.
Kitchen was ok if a little basic but the oven was not clean inside. It needed a thorough scrub.
On day of arrival we wanted a shower but there was not enough water. There were no instructions anywhere to boost the water so we had to call on the owner next door. Apparently the cleaner should have pressed the boost on the boiler but forgot!
The no instructions thing was a bit of a theme. I had to work out the TV, heating, microwave and everything else without any reference. The DVD player had no remote and no external buttons so, although it did work, I could not adjust anything. We suffered subtitles and the wrong aspect throughout our stay.
Sleeping was interesting. All the upstairs windows are roof lights and ceilings are low. Advice:- Do not sleep on the side or the double directly below the roof light. You will be dripped on all night! It was not leaking but the condensation was horrendous on the very poorly insulated units. We moved the bed forward after the first night and it was much better!
Previous feedback mentioned the poor wifi. It is, in fact my phone refused to log onto it. I suspect one wifi was servicing too many people!
This feedback sounds a bit negative, it isn't meant to be. We had a good time and it was generally fine. These were just small things!
"A very comfortable , extremely clean, well equipped cottage suitable for adults and children, providing an excellent base for visiting the North Yorkshire coast, the moors, Cleveland Way, the National Park, and further afield."
Places like Whitby, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, and Saltburn are short drives away via the A174. There are a number of short and longer walks from the doorstep. Mulgrave Cottage is situated in the centre of a very quiet village yet a short walk to Staithes harbour, Staithes' pubs, Staithes Co-op, and fish and chips. Dalehouse itself has a pub that at the time of this review serves food although we did not have the opportunity to visit. At nearby Borrowby there is an equestrian centre.
The cottage has parking for at least two vehicles and at the front there is a private gated and block paved area where you can sit to eat and drink (weather permitting) and where children can play safely.
The owners, Elaine and Gerard, live in the adjacent farm house and are very helpful and friendly. We and other family members had an excellent stay and proved a very positive distraction from the current national crisis. Overall, we can't recommend Mulgrave Cottage enough and look forward to returning.
"A lovely cottage with a very warm welcome from the owner."
WiFi a little intermittent but given the area not unexpected. The beds were very comfortable, along with pillows. Cottage was spotlessly clean and welcoming. Had a most enjoyable stay. Not needed with our party, but if needed good disabled facility.
"Mulgrave cottage was exactly what we were looking for - a little cottage tucked away in a village, but in walking distance of Staithes and the coastal path."
It was crystal clean, plenty of space inside and comfy beds! It didn't feel very cosy, though was perfectly functional and met all our needs. The kitchen was well equipped, though the fridge was too small for 6 guests for a week. We were a little disappointed that the outside terrace was also the driveway, though it was big enough that it didn't matter too much. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to explore the area.
"We had a fantastic short break at Mulgrave Cottage."
The location is idyllic and within walking distance of Staithes and a short drive to Runswick Bay, Sandsend and Whitby. We were made to feel very welcome by Gerard and Elaine and they had thought of everything their guests might need. The welcome basket was a lovely touch! Everything in the cottage was spotlessly clean and hand sanitizer and hand wash were provided. We would love to come back and stay for longer!
"This is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful location."
Would love to return. Very clean property with everything you could ever need.
"Delightful cottage in peaceful village

The owners very friendly and helpful with local advice
The perfect cottage to relax and unwind
Will be returning again
"Mulgrave cottage was home from home, everything you needed was there."
The cottage was idyllic and with such peaceful surroundings.
Thank you..... see you again.
"We stayed here 3 nights September 2019."
Five adults wanting to relax and enjoy each others company. The cottage enabled us to do all of these things. despite the weather we were able to snatch a coffee outside when the sun decided to dodge the rain. The farmer was friendly and could not have done enough to make our stay pleasurable. There is an old interesting pub within a short walk away. Though it served food we did not eat there, but the menu on the wall looked varied and interesting. Two of our relatives are from the States and were going home to recommend to friends.
"Mulgrave cottage is in a remote and peacefull position with a traditional pub in easy walking distance."
The owners are very good ,
"We all had a wonderful time, the cottage was exactly what we wanted and needed."
We had a very warm welcome and felt at home. The area was ideal and we would definitely recommend it to others.
"Lovely quiet location ideal for touring the coast and moors, the cottage was very clean and well equipped and the hosts were friendly and very helpful."
The only issues were low wifi reception and poor phone reception.
"The owners couldn't do enough to help us ,fantastic place to stay"
"Property, furnishing, location, surroundings all excellent."
Friendly welcome. Minor quibbles - tired kitchenware, no sweeping brush!
"This holiday cottage is beautifully kept and is ideally located for Visiting Staithes, Whitby and the surrounding areas."
We were made very welcome and would certainly recommend this cottage to others.
"Enough to say it was very very enjoyable and its likely we will be booking for next year"
Cottage was spotlesly clean.Gerard and family were very nice and nothing was to much trouble. Advantage having on site parking in such a small village. Granddaughter loved been able to go and see the animals. Good food in local pub was home cooked and very reasonably priced. Will return
"Perfect venue, perfect surroundings and perfect hosts."
"We had a great week."
The cottage is spotlessly clean, cosy and a perfect base for the coast and moors. It was a real treat being on a farm during lambing - we saw lambs born and our daughter got to feed a lamb. We will definitely return and would highly recommend to others. Thank you Gerard and Elaine.
"The cottage was excellent The owner met us on arrival to show us round."
Made sure every thing was to our liking. Everything was excellent for the three days we were there thank you to the owners they were first class. Alan Cartwright
"The cottage was Great: clean comfortable and well equipped."
Very nice welcome with tea, milk biscuits and chocolate. Would recommend this to family and friends. Good accommodation for anyone with a disability.
"The cottage is well equipped."
There were toiletries in the bathrooms, tea, coffee, sugar, and everything needed to cook. On arrival we were greeted with milk, biscuits and sweets. It is nicely situated within short drives to Whitby, Saltburn and the North York Moors. Lots of lovely walks on the doorstep. The pub is two minutes walk away were we enjoyed good meals and the staff were friendly.
The cottage owners, Gerard, Elaine and their son Tom couldn’t have made us more welcome. We stayed over Christmas and on Christmas Day realised we had no gravy for our Christmas dinner. They gave us homemade gravy and apple sauce. On Boxing Day they arrived with homemade soup and spicy lamb, cooked by Tom, which was delicious. Gerard also let us meet his farm dogs, cows and a beautiful horse. He gave us lots of interesting information which made the stay even more special.
On arriving home one of our company had left items at the cottage and Gerard and Elaine posted them back. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made of stay special. We certainly intend to return.
"My husband had a stroke eight weeks ago, Mulgrave Cottage was absolutely perfect for him."
Wet room, spacious, comfortable and warm. Owners were friendly and welcoming. Weather was good and we were able to get out and about every day.
"I had a very enjoyable holiday with my disabled husband ( the disabled ground floor wetroom and bedroom were perfect for us."
We also had 2 adult granddaughters with us, 1 with her partner and 1 with her baby and they had the upstairs bedrooms and bathroom. This was ideal for all of us and we had a very good holiday. The owners were friendly and the cottage well-equipped.
The North Yorkshire moors and coast are beautiful and the cottage is in easy reach of many interesting places.
"A wonderful week in a beautiful cottage."
We enjoyed rediscovering the Yorkshire coast with all its hidden charm and look forward to returning soon.
"The location of the cottage & the welcome from the owners was fantastic and the cottage was so warm and comfortable."
Easy access to local facilities.
"Our hosts Elaine and Gerard went above and beyond!"
Chocolate, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar, milk and many other products had already been supplied for us.
Fresh flowers in the cottage.
Gerard also popped in with some homemade cupcakes on the second day of our stay, which was a lovely added touch.
He was always on hand if we had any questions, as well as suggestions and local knowledge to help us with our days out during our stay.
We couldn't fault anything at all about our stay and will be back!!!!!
"Wonderful reception from the owners, plenty of comfortable seating, well ..."
Wonderful reception from the owners, plenty of comfortable seating, well equipped, fantastically clean, excellent wet room and bathroom facilities, all round 10/10
"The farmer who owns the cottage was very friendly and helpful."
A lovely peaceful position. The only criticism I have is that the fridge freezer was very small! Overall I would really recommend this cottage especially if you like countryside and farm animals. The local pub was excellent, good food at reasonable prices
"Although Sykes "met our expectations" (we have used Sykes before), our hosts at Mulgrave Cottage far exceeded expectations."
They were friendly & VERY helpful. The cottage is lovely & everything we needed was provided including a "welcome pack" of milk, sweets & biscuits - just what we needed after the long drive from Edinburgh. When we arrived, the oil warning light had come on in my car & I asked if there was a local garage I could go to. Mr Welford checked the oil level & advised me not to drive anymore until the oil had been topped up and offered to go to the garage next morning to get the oil for me, which he did. He even put the oil in for me. Kindness above & beyond expectations. There was a wee problem with the hot water & within 5 minutes of us letting Mrs Welford know, Mr Welford was on site resolving the matter. I would reccommend Mulgrave Cottage very highly. It is situated in a lovely part of Yorkshire & within easy travelling distance of Whitby, Saltburn by the Sea & the Moors. Staithes is a picturesque harbour town, although it has very steep access roads. Everyone seemed friendly & we had a very pleasant week.
"Lovely cottage, spotlessly clean and warm."
Owners very friendly and approachable. Appreciated the milk and biscuits on arrival. Would highly recommend and would return again.
"Mulgrave Cottage was perfect for our family weekend break."
The cottage was spanking clean, everything we needed was provided and the welcome gift a very thoughtful gesture by the owners. Elaine, Gerard and Tom all made us feel welcome and Gerard went out of his way to make sure we saw the newly born calves and lambs. Would highly recommend the cottage to anyone wanting a few days away with easy access to Staithes, Runswick Bay and Whitby. There's also a great pub two minutes walk away, The Fox and Hounds, where Bill and the rest of the staff were really friendly and welcoming. We'll definitely be booking for another break and looking forward to it already.
"This cottage is superb and the owners are so wonderfully helpful."
We have already recommended this cottage to family and friends. A great spot to tour the North York Moors and the Cleveland coast.
"Very friendly owners and made us most welcome."
We enjoyed the welcome pack and milk in the fridge.
"Elaine & Gerard are excellent hosts - providing just enough information & being available if required but not giving the impression that they are watching everything you do!"
The ideal balance.
"Lovely location, well appointed cottage - and the hosts very friendly, taking our children on a trip around their farm"
"We had a fantastic week at this cottage which is perfectly located for both coast and countryside day trips."
Cottage was very cosy, comfortable, spotlessly clean and very well equipped for all our needs. Downstairs bedroom with en suite wet room was a thoughtful addition and ideal for my mum who has mobility problems. Owners were very friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make us feel welcome (fab welcome pack) and giving us ideas for making the most of the local area. Best cottage we have stayed in and will definitely book again! Excelled in every way.
"The cottage was very cosy, immaculate and well equipped for a stress-free, relaxing holiday."
The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely consider booking this cottage again.
"We had a fab holiday with the cottage and it was great for my mother who is in a wheelchair."

. The cottage icaters for every need from families to the elderly and people with mobility issues. We had a fantastic week and was lucky with the weather make sure you visit the local pub Fox & Hounds they make you feel really welcome and the food is excellent too.
"A home away from home, friendly owners who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome."
"Wonderful welcome, lovely cottage, we will recommend!"
