  • "Mulgrave Cottage is ideal for less able bodied people."

It has a big wet room with a lovely shower however we as able bodied found it a bit awkward using the sink to brush our teeth as it is so low with a shelf above it. The cottage is lovely and comfortable with everything you need. Lottie Shaws ginger Parkin biscuits that were in the cottage were beautiful and a shame we couldn’t find where to get them. Gerard took us for a ride in the trailer up to see the sheep, my 5 year old grandson loved feeding the lamb. He also loved giving the horses carrots every day. Pity there wasn’t a visitors book that we could share our holiday experience in. The Black Bull at Ugthorpe is a place not to be missed. The food is plentiful, freshly cooked and gorgeous but leave room for a scrumptious dessert from the many available.

Ample space for six (we were five), Comfortable beds and sofas and a large dining table. Great location for exploring the coast between Whitby and Saltburn, although you have to be prepared to drive on some narrow roads. Good place for children who are interested in farm animals as the farmer is very friendly. We parked two cars easily even with the picnic furniture in place. Even better than expected.

The local pub is literally a minutes walk & the food was superb! Lovely walks around the area if you enjoy the fresh air & Staithes is only a 10 minute walk too. Quietly located, by a working farm, you could nevertheless walk down into the beautiful harbour at Staithes. A local co-op was easily to hand and open long hours and a kid-friendly cafe also within a gentle walk. The holiday let itself was very thoughtfully renovated with accessibility in mind on the ground floor and neatly curated kitchen equipment. I enjoyed the pleasantly humorous juxtaposition of books. On the one rainy day we played *all* the board games in the house.

More than enough room for 3 adults and 3 teenagers with a courtyard overlooking the countryside and the owner's farm. Gerard, the owner was lovely and showed the children round the farm and is emailing photos when the new foal is born. It's a short walk up a steep hill past the pub to the main road and then a few minutes into Staithes. Not much open when we went, but booking the excellent Cod & Lobster was essential. We had a fabulous stay here, there were 6 adults and we fitted in beautifully, albeit that my husband and I were in single beds but that was our choice; just the family being together after this dreadful pandemic was well worth it. There was still plenty of room. The cottage was extremely clean and tidy and it was the best equipped cottage that we have stayed in for a very long time. The location is amazing, lovely walks in every direction from the cottage and you can easily get into Staithes within 10 minutes walk up and down steep Hills and then onto the Cleveland Way. There is a nice little pub just a few yards from the cottage. We walked the Cleveland Way to Port Mulgrave and Runswick Bay and it was absolutely beautiful. We also explored the local walks from the cottage through the woods and the dales which were lovely. We had trips to Whitby and Saltburn, we had the best Fish and Chips ever in Saltburn at Oscars on the sea front. We ate out in the little court yard in the sunshine most evenings which was lovely and peaceful. The owners were very welcoming, always checking that everything was okay for us.

  • "We stayed for 3 nights in October."

On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful village and its proximity to Staithes. The place seemed clean and smelled of bleach, which, considering covid, was a good thing. We opted not to use the downstairs bedroom so it was not made up. We did use the ensuite downstairs as a toilet however. There was only 4 of us, 2 adults and our children, but had there been 6 of us, in my view it would have been overcrowded. I understand that the downstairs bedroom is very much intended for a less able person, but has made the living and kitchen area too small. Kitchen was ok if a little basic but the oven was not clean inside. It needed a thorough scrub. On day of arrival we wanted a shower but there was not enough water. There were no instructions anywhere to boost the water so we had to call on the owner next door. Apparently the cleaner should have pressed the boost on the boiler but forgot! The no instructions thing was a bit of a theme. I had to work out the TV, heating, microwave and everything else without any reference. The DVD player had no remote and no external buttons so, although it did work, I could not adjust anything. We suffered subtitles and the wrong aspect throughout our stay. Sleeping was interesting. All the upstairs windows are roof lights and ceilings are low. Advice:- Do not sleep on the side or the double directly below the roof light. You will be dripped on all night! It was not leaking but the condensation was horrendous on the very poorly insulated units. We moved the bed forward after the first night and it was much better! Previous feedback mentioned the poor wifi. It is, in fact my phone refused to log onto it. I suspect one wifi was servicing too many people! This feedback sounds a bit negative, it isn't meant to be. We had a good time and it was generally fine. These were just small things!

  • "A very comfortable , extremely clean, well equipped cottage suitable for adults and children, providing an excellent base for visiting the North Yorkshire coast, the moors, Cleveland Way, the National Park, and further afield."

Places like Whitby, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, and Saltburn are short drives away via the A174. There are a number of short and longer walks from the doorstep. Mulgrave Cottage is situated in the centre of a very quiet village yet a short walk to Staithes harbour, Staithes' pubs, Staithes Co-op, and fish and chips. Dalehouse itself has a pub that at the time of this review serves food although we did not have the opportunity to visit. At nearby Borrowby there is an equestrian centre. The cottage has parking for at least two vehicles and at the front there is a private gated and block paved area where you can sit to eat and drink (weather permitting) and where children can play safely. The owners, Elaine and Gerard, live in the adjacent farm house and are very helpful and friendly. We and other family members had an excellent stay and proved a very positive distraction from the current national crisis. Overall, we can't recommend Mulgrave Cottage enough and look forward to returning.

It was crystal clean, plenty of space inside and comfy beds! It didn't feel very cosy, though was perfectly functional and met all our needs. The kitchen was well equipped, though the fridge was too small for 6 guests for a week. The cottage is lovely & everything we needed was provided including a "welcome pack" of milk, sweets & biscuits - just what we needed after the long drive from Edinburgh. When we arrived, the oil warning light had come on in my car & I asked if there was a local garage I could go to. Mr Welford checked the oil level & advised me not to drive anymore until the oil had been topped up and offered to go to the garage next morning to get the oil for me, which he did. He even put the oil in for me. Kindness above & beyond expectations. There was a wee problem with the hot water & within 5 minutes of us letting Mrs Welford know, Mr Welford was on site resolving the matter. I would reccommend Mulgrave Cottage very highly. There is also a well-equipped kitchen with dining area.

Stairs lead up to two pleasant bedrooms and the family bathroom.

Outside, the rear enclosed patio garden is safe for children to play and offers off road parking, not often found in the Staithes area.

A short stroll brings you to centre of this charming fishing village, whilst the surrounding countryside is a walker’s haven.

Dalehouse Farm Holiday Cottages

Staithes 0.5 miles. These two, pretty, stone semi-detached cottages, are quietly tucked away in the small hamlet of Dalehouse, just a few minutes’ walk from the charming fishing village of Staithes. Set on the owners’ farm which has suckler cows and sheep, and where they breed Cleveland Bay horses, the cottages overlook fields and countryside and are in the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing holiday, with an abundance of walking tracks and cycling trails in the area. Originally the milking parlour, they have been converted to a good standard and provide comfortable accommodation with a traditional feel running through them. Both cottages have L-shaped open plan living areas, with leather sofas, electric stoves and family dining areas. The larger cottage offers the flexibility of a ground floor bedroom and wet room, enabling the less mobile to stay, while both have family bathrooms and first floor bedrooms with views of the lambs skipping around in the springtime. With both cottages having off road parking, guests can leave their cars safely behind and walk into historic Staithes, with its narrow cobbled streets and cottages that tumble down the bank towards the picturesque harbour, with a feeling of stepping back in time. Wander around the quaint shops, partake in tea and cakes, or enjoy fine fish and chips in one of the local inns. The Captain Cook's Museum is well worth a visit, or blow the cobwebs away with a bracing cliff top walk along the Cleveland Way long distance trail, that follows the coastline for miles. This special corner of North Yorkshire offers some superb countryside, with the North York Moors on your doorstep and delightful inland and coastal villages to explore, including Runswick Bay, Saltburn and Danby, with attractions such as the Danby Moors Exhibition Centre, the steam railway at Grosmont and the interesting mining museum at Skinningrove. Two well-placed cottages for wonderful family holidays.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
