Clean and well-equipped. A quiet place to stay. Inviting pub attached to the property, however, we experienced no noise from it at all. We would consider coming back.

Plenty of local walks albeit hilly in places although we expected that. Convenient for Staithes and Whitby. Very comfortable all round.

  • "Excellent all round."

Rooms spacious, warm, very well equipped and well presented. Semi detached to a charming country pub - served very good food (evenings 6 pm to 8 pm only) and good beer. Very quiet too! Outside space is limited but this was not a problem to us as a couple. One of the best places we have stayed, and would happily return to!

  • "Lovely cottage, very clean and spacious just a shame there was no washing machine as having two children it is a necessity and the nearest launderette is 12 miles away!"

Don't micro pack! but the owners seem to think a dishwasher and clean pots takes priority to clean clothes very odd. The other bit of a disappointment is that there is no mattress on the main bed it was a giant piece of foam and was extremely uncomfortable! I would have expected a proper mattress. I wouldn't choose to stay here again for those reasons.

Your booking was made 13 months prior to the stay and so if the washing machine was a necessity to your stay then you had over 1 year to check whether the facilities suited your requirements ,rather than waiting until you arrived at the cottage. Also a washing machine is not listed on the itinerary on the Sykes listing. The mattress is a new memory foam mattress which many guests have commented on how comfortable it is. my only points would be a washer drier would be useful, and change the sofa bed in the lounge as not very comfortable

  • "The Cottage was very nice, well laid out and well equiped."

The Negatives was that the Wifi was not included in the rent and the Mobile phone connection in the area was very poor. The other factor which should be in the listing is the fact that you have to walk a fairly steep hill to get to any amenities. Anyone who has slight walking difficulties would struggle.

  • "After deciding that Staithes itself looked very compact and difficult to park in, we were unsure of booking a place just outside Staithes."

We neednt have worried , it was perfect, very comfortable, quiet and with parking. The bonus was the great country pub next door. Reviews all said it didnt cause any disturbance which was correct. The pub had only just opened and served unbelievably cheap beers and the food started being served on the Thursday which was great for us. Loads of country walks directly from the cottage and close enough to beaches, holiday towns and villages for a quick drive out. The cottage itself was very modern, warm and quite spacious. Very well appointed with lots of crockery and utensils pluse spares of everything - not always our experience with some lets. Not much outside space for sitting out with a small enclosed courtyard at the back with no views. WiFi was an extra £10 but well worth it, especially as no mobile signal. All in all very enjoyable and good value for money. I would definitely recommend.

  • "Lovely, high quality cottage with walks from the front door."

Staithes is a short walk away (with steep hills!). Lovely area to explore. Only downside of this delightful place is the difficulties for taller people in the bathroom (sloping ceiling everywhere except the shower ... ouch!) and kitchen (very low cooker hood). Otherwise gorgeous!

  • "A very well appointed Cottage in a nice quiet location."

There are walks from the doorstep and Staithes is within easy reach by foot. The Pub next door is very welcoming and comes highly commended with great home cooked food to be sampled. Note; we didn't suffer any disturbance at all so no worries there! We had a minor issue with the Shower which was repaired in a very timely manner - thanks. River Cottage provides an excellent base to cover this part of North Yorkshire and is well recommended.

  • "Extremely clean, neat and tidy."

Good little pub adjoining the cottage, causes no disturbance. Good-sized kitchen if you like cooking, although no colander. Comfy bed. No "welcome pack" after a long journey. Taps in bathroom much too small, so impossible to get hands under them. The little courtyard is a bit tatty and bare. No real designated parking space in pub car park: it's a free-for-all with no space at all sometimes. On the expensive side for what it is. Hate the Sykes "book now before prices rise" rubbish. It has the opposite effect on us.

All you could ever need is included. The owners give good communication and keep the property in very good condition. Cleanliness is outstanding. The position of the home is in a very quiet village with easy reach of Whitby on the main roads and easy reach of the moors. the shops are in Staines which is in walking distance although up a hill out of Dalehouse but only a 2 minute drive. The Pub next door is very friendly with a lovely local atmosphere. We would use this property again without hesitation.

Very good walking in the area, from the house you can walk to Roxby and on the way take the public footpath just before you reach St Josephs church. The walk through the fields and woods was so nice then you are back on the road and take a left turn and it brings you back to the house. Two hours well spent.

River Cottage is lovely and clean and thoughtfully laid out. The Fox and Hounds next door is nice and friendly and good value. There is an excellent view of the harbour in Staithes from the Cod and Lobster pub at the bottom of the village; well worth a visit even with a steep climb back up. • "Very cosy and comfortable cottage, it was lovely to come back to after a day walking."

The position was great, very secluded. I was unsure about booking somewhere next to a pub because of potential noise, but there was none whatsoever, in fact it was a particularly quiet location. The only negative point is that I was disappointed to be asked to pay separately for access to the wifi. I would expect it to be included in the rental cost. Wifi is particularly essential as there is absolutely no phone signal at the cottage.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
