  • "Our 5th stay in this cottage so it speaks for itself how happy we are with it."

Clean, cosy and well equipped. Situated within a few minutes walk from shops, pubs, sea front and a caretaker on hand if needed. Looking forward to next year's stay and many more.

Thank you for your lovely review. It is very much appreciated. Property Owner

Thank you for your kind review. It means so much. It’s lovely to know that our efforts to keep the cottage the way we would expect it if holidaying elsewhere is appreciated. Many thanks again. Property Owner

  • "While we found our stay was pleasant and the presentation of the cottage excellent we could have done with more guidance on how to find it, down an obscure and twisty alleyway."

We had to call the owners agent. A simple picture or sketch of the alleyway entrance would helped. It was unfortunate that the toaster, as reported by the previous users, havinf regularly blown the main fuse, was no fixed in the period we were there. Although Keith did come and try to set up the TV we were not able to get the normal programmes and finally had to resort to watching DVDs. Your recommendation to arrange parking at Glenvale was very welcome.

So sorry you had a couple of issues during your stay and hope they didn’t detract from a lovely stay, in such a picturesque village. We pride ourselves on our lovely little cottage and want our guests to love it too. It is tucked away just off the High Street and very private but Mandy or Keith (Agents)are always there to help with directions if Sykes directions may not be clear to you. We will take a photo of the alleyway entrance to add to our listing, for future guests. Thank you for pointing this out. Apparently, after speaking to Keith, he came within a few minutes to show you how the lounge TV works. There are instructions both in our guest folder in the kitchen and also a manufacturer’s guide in the TV unit. There is also a TV in the kitchen, whilst not ideal, could be viewed instead of having to watch DVD’s. Sorry for the toaster issue but Keith said he called within a couple of days to locate the spare one for you and you said you were happy to use the grill for toast. Glad you found Glenvale Car Park useful. We always use it when we visit as there can be parking issues elsewhere during peak times. Kind regards. Property Owner

Easier to suggest looking for the passageway opposite Lion@Staithes which is next to Betty & Bo. Apart from that we had a wonderful holiday the cottage is very clean and had everything we needed for the week. The village itself was lovely, everyone was so friendly. We would love to return.

It’s not far to walk to the coop but it’s nice to be able to make a drink when you arrive after a long drive. Everything was really comfortable, and what it lacks in views it gains in its central location and the fact that very few people walk past the property.

The living area was good but if you want to lay out and relax the chairs are a bit uncomfortable. Maybe a comfy sofa would be helpful for the future. Also if you have pets, there is no restriction to keep them in the kitchen at night.we had to take our own safety gate. No complaints at all.we had a brilliant stay ans have highly recommended too family and friends. We would drefinately stay again. Thank you

Thank you for your lovely feedback. It’s so good to know you enjoyed your stay in our lovely little cottage. The chairs are new and need ‘wearing in’. We also have foot stools so that you can put your feet up. We had a fantastic stair gate but unfortunately it went missing and we haven’t been able to find a suitable one since, but we’re still looking. So glad this didn’t spoil your stay. Thanks again. Highly recommend pre booking parking as advertised. We did and this worked out very well as the council car park gets very busy at peak times . We did find the cottage a little difficult to find even with the instructions. Even the locals hadn’t heard of the passage the cottage is located in and there was no signpost? but after eventually finding it , we were very pleased with our choice of accommodation. The cottage is very quirky , clean and well equipped and everything we needed for a great stay . We would happily recommend this property to family and friends. Lots to do locally too . We found fossils , went sea fishing, cycled the cinder trail from Whitby to robin hoods bay , walked to runswick bay , and visited Saltburn on sea and sands end . We love this part of Yorkshire and never fails to deliver .

  • "Lovely little cottage in a beautiful village."

It is a great location for the local shops/cafes and pubs, with plenty of lovely walks nearby. It was a little hard to find at first but a great, quiet location up a small alleyway. The local contact was very close by and really helpful and friendly. The cottage is very small but cosy and comfy; in fact the only thing missing was a couple of footstools to get your feet up after a day out. Three levels and two flights of stairs might not suit everyone, or the fact that you have to leave vehicles in the pay car park at the top of the village after unloading your luggage - we used the council one as it was cheaper despite what it says on the signpost to the private one! We took a weekday break in June for a much-needed short holiday and had a great relaxing time and hope to be back!

  • "Cottage was cold on arrival."

The toothbrush mug had secondhand toothpaste round the rim and some water inside. Two of the egg cups had egg yoke down their sides. In the current climate that is utterly unacceptable. The toaster had not been cleaned. There were crumbs on top, inside and underneath. One or two of the utensils were grubby and the cooker top had not been polished clean. The passage outside would benefit from an occasional sweep and bleach. Dog's muck and bird's mess.

So sorry you had a few issues at the cottage. This is most unusual. We rely on our lovely guests to wash everything they use thoroughly, ready for new guests arriving, as housekeepers cannot possibly check every single item in the cottage as well as do a thorough clean, linen change and sanitise (due to Covid 19) in the time between guests leaving and new guests arriving on the same day. There are 4 egg cups for two guests so a clean one could have been used instead. The mark on the toothbrush holder was cream cleaner that just hadn't rinsed away. The alleyway is regularly cleaned and I'm afraid we have no control over dog walkers and birds after it has been swept. The Old Cottage can sometimes seem a bit chilly on arrival. Heating is free and it soon warms up if you turn the radiators on. Everyone is doing their best in these unprecedented times. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was very clean and very comfortable."

The alleyway from the high street to the cottage however was dirty and could do with being swept. There were several wheelie bins outside the door to the cottage but only one belonging to the Old Cottage. Although not a problem for me many renters will find that the steepness of the incline to the top of the village will be an issue particularly for the elderly or the "unfit". The maximum parking in the car park was for 24 hours and therefore a trip to the car park was having to be made to feed the machine each morning during our stay. IWe enjoyed the short break but did find that Staithes could do with a clean up and most of the properties could do with having their exteriors painted.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you found the property clean and comfortable. In regards to the parking we are sorry you found this an issue at the property, Parking passes are available from the local council if purchased in advance and this is stated within the properties description. • "The cottage, in itself, was everything we expected."

Very comfortable and ideally situated. We had a few problems with parking - which would have been handy if explained beforehand. Your information seemed to indicate that we could park opposite the sweet shop - which we did, there being no other place to park. As Staithes was extremely busy, we failed to notice that this extension of the 40 mins parking zone was actually a loading only bay. The signage on the road was very faint and the sign further down on the wall minute. Consequently we managed to get landed with a parking fine. We were advised by the parking attendant that a parking disc should be available in our cottage to enable us to park as a 'virtual' resident in the public carpark up the hill. This was not so and we subsequently ended up in the visitor car park which was £10 per day - £70 on top of the holiday cost which we had previously also paid £30 to re-book for July, June not being available to us due to lockdown. It would have been helpful if parking information had been available to us prior to arriving in Staithes. We regularily book cottages through Sykes but feel a bit let down with this one and would welcome your comments.

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy you enjoyed your stay at The Old Cottage. The website states all the information guests need when it comes to parking. You will find this under the summary section. Property Owner

Extremely well equipped. We booked parking at Glen Vale which was stress free and nearer to Staithes compared to the main council car park, recommended. Lots of great walking, we were sad to leave. Just one point - there are rules about your dog which should sleep in the kitchen, only go in living area with you and never go into the bedroom. Unfortunately our lovely gentle Lab tends to just follow us wherever and we struggled to contain him as the staircases are open plan. Perhaps a baby gate or similar might help guests comply here.

Also we didn't like having 8 rubbish bins directly outside the property it was an eyesore and possible health hazard during the summer months, most of the bins belonged to other properties and also the sweet shop on the other side of the road !!!!!

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear your comments. The property layout & windows are very typical of cottages in Staithes. Most properties do have smaller windows. The cottage does boast lovely views from the bedroom. The property has no damp and we do provide heating and lighting within the cost of the rental for our guests to use as little or often as they wish The rubbish bins belong to the local shop. They are mostly recycling material but can assure you that these are emptied weekly by the local council and therefore do not pose a potential health hazard. About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
