  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit to Wayside Cottage."

It stands in a very picturesque spot above woodland and is comfortable, clean, well equipped and always pleasingly cosy. Many thanks to Landlord Keith. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Wayside Cottage for a relaxing, away-from-it-all break. The short distance to open moorland was a big hit with me too.

We all had a lovely relaxing break. The cottage is very spacious and very clean and tidy. The kitchen is well equipped. The tea, cake and milk was a lovely touch after a long drive on arrival. The eggs from the neigbour were fresh and tasty ;) we enjoyed having the log burner on in the evening with a glass of wine or 4. We would recommend Wayside Cottage to friends and family.

Exceptionally clean and very well equipped with a cosy feel which made it easy to settle into on arrival. The thoughtful welcome pack was really appreciated. Milk/tea/cake etc. The Cottage was the perfect base for long walks with our Border Collie. Access to some footpaths from the gate with care on the road but only a very short drive to moorland/forest drives. Home cooked meals after a day of walking were easy to prepare with the kitchen so well equipped. The super comfy bed made sure of a good nights sleep ready for the next day! We would highly recommend Wayside Cottage for a peaceful break from busy life and we will certainly return. Thank you Keith. Karen and Derek

The welcoming gift was well received. Very relaxing and comfortable. One of the best beds I have slept in. Keith is a great host supplying every bit of information we needed and we knew he was on hand if needed. If I had one little thing I would alter it would be the sofa settee in the lounge. Only for comfort whilst sitting and relaxing but that is only our personal preference as it does serve its purpose. Well done Keith on an exceptional cottage and hopefully we will be back.

Many thanks for the glowing report Theresa. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Wayside Cottage. I look forward to welcoming you back for another stay. As it happens I have since changed the bed settee for an ordinary sofa. The bed settee compromised comfort for functionality but as no-one used it as a bed (to my knowledge) it seemed sensible to make the change. Property Owner

Many thanks for the glowing feedback! Glad you enjoyed your stay. I take your point about the road at night. The absence of street lights and a footpath do mean you have to take care. Very clean and well equipped But 2 issues the bathroom wasn’t near the bedroom I do think the owner should mention the steps to the property and had a problem with a step from the kitchen to the lounge that was a problem but otherwise a very clean and equipped property

Thanks for your feedback and those positive comments about the cottage. I'm sorry you felt the need to award such a low overall score (the lowest of any guest so far). In terms of the steps I think you will find that the description of the property does mention all the steps and also says that because of them the property may not be suitable for people with mobility issues. I'd suggest you read the full details of any property you decide to book in future to avoid disappointment. I'm puzzled that you have marked the property so low on cleanliness despite commenting above that it was very clean. I've never had less than 100% scores for cleanliness! Your comments in the cottage guest book were also very positive which seems at odds with the feedback left online. Property Owner

Nothing was too much trouble for him. A lovely welcome tin with sticky cake, oat biscuits and tea bags awaited us - thank you. We didn't keep the lovely tin although I was tempted. Hardest thing to get used to was the absolute darkness as we have a streetlamp outside our house at home - I used the torch on my phone a lot in the night. There are so many places to visit and we found the people in Pickering among the friendliest we have ever met. Near the end of our week we found a lovely dog walking spot at the top of Middle Head Road just past the cottage, so if you have dogs with you, explore that early on. In summary, cottage was immaculate and comfortable - I have nothing negative to say about it.

It was well equipped, bigger than what you see from the outside. It was very quiet and maybe a bit spooky at night. The location is perfect for walking or visiting. Pickering is a lovely little town, with a nice market on Monday. The negatives would be, a very uncomfortable sofa and there is no live TV, just Freeview on demand. you need to bring some games, books and DVDs. There are a couple of charity shops in town so you could get some. And since it is an old house the floors are not totally even, and there is a big step from the living room to the kitchen. It is not major, but it can become a problem. You can contact the owner for that. it is a really nice place. We had a good break. And the dogs made friends with the 2 free range chickens down the road, they just kept staring at each other.

  • "We were disappointed with the description of the property, primarily that there was an enclosed "garden" which turned out to be a very small patio with uneven steps as this was not good for us or our elderly greyhound."

Also, the step between the lounge and kitchen, although noted in the property details was much higher than expected; the owner did make an intermediate step out of wood when we mentioned this to him. Furthermore, there was an ongoing issue with the central heating, the owner told us that he knew about this and although he did respond immediately and provided oil heaters it wasn't ideal in October - we went to bed at 8pm on our first night just to get warm! On the plus side, the sofa and bed were extremely comfortable, the latter with thankfully a high tog duvet! Also, the cottage was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. We would like to thank Keith for the welcome pack which was much appreciated and his help whilst we were there but we did leave a day early due to both the cold and our dog becoming increasingly nervous of the patio steps after injuring her leg on one, by Thursday she wouldn't leave the cottage at all and we had to carry her out to the car :'(

Thanks for the positive comments in your review. I'm sorry you were disappointed in any way by your stay at Wayside Cottage. I have amended the property details on the listing to make it clearer that there are steps down to the front door and that these and the step into the kitchen may make the property unsuited to people with restricted mobility. In terms of clarity for potential guests reading your review, I think it only fair to point out that there had been a previous problem with the heating, which I believed had been resolved. The problem you experienced was not on your first night, but on your second night (Saturday). You chose not to contact me until the Sunday morning and I attended within 30 minutes, got the heating going again and left some back up electric heaters in case the problem recurred. Had you contacted me on the Saturday evening you would have received the same service and not had to spend the evening in the cold. I spoke to you on the Tuesday of your stay and was told all was well, the heating was working and you and the dog had been out for the day. The next I heard was on Thursday evening when you left me a voicemail saying you were going home a day early because the dog wasn't well and you mentioned the heating had gone off again but didn't say when. I'm truly sorry the cottage fell short of your expectations. Had I been aware of the problems earlier, I may have been able to resolve them to your satisfaction. An engineer has since visited and carried out a repair to the boiler and as I say I've amended the property description to prevent any further misunderstandings for future guests. Property Owner
