  • "A lovely cottage in a beautiful friendly village and everything was well described."

It was very thoughtful of the hosts to leave tea/coffee/pizza and beans and although we didn't think we'd need them - we did! The weather was kind and the little garden was very welcome. We had initial reservations about the shower but actually it all worked out very well and didn't detract from any comfort. The location is excellent, especially for York and we would recommend.

  • "We enjoyed our stay and there was plenty of space for the 2 of us."

We felt that the photos of bedrooms didn’t do them justice as there was actually more space than photos suggested + there was decent wardrobe space on the landing which wasn’t shown at all. We agree with other reviews that the wet room arrangement was a bit strange in that the shower was in the middle of the room so if you need to use the loo after anyone has had a shower, take your wellies! We felt the sofa could do with updating. We were always able to park but the space is a bit dependent on other people parking considerately. There was some traffic noise, mainly in the mornings - tractors etc but, just because it’s a village doesn’t mean you are not going to get any traffic.

The little local shop have some little maps which shows several nice walks all setting of from their door compiled by the village in association with the land owners they were the highlight for us . We used the white bear pub ( 2 min walk) their are two in the village but don’t be hungry or thirsty on a Monday or Tuesday but the little shop was always open and very friendly .

  • "May Cottage is small and cosy."

Decor is perfect and it’s bright and clean. All the comforts of home and the owners have used the space in the cottage really well. We used the cottage as a base for revisiting some of my childhood haunts in Beverley,Hornsea, Bridlington and visited the Eden Camp at Malton which I would highly recommend. The village has two pubs but during our stay there was only the White Bear open from Wednesday to Sunday they were well organised to protect themselves and customers and the food was really good. The village shop has the essentials and there is a chip shop and an Indian Restaurant. Would I recommend May Cottage? That would be a resounding yes we had a fabulous time and We were very sorry to leave. Would highly recommend.

It has a lot of character and is just right for a family of 3. Our puppy was also very happy there!

  • "I stayed at May Cottage for 3 weeks while I was waiting to complete on a house purchase."

Myself and my little terrier dog where very comfortable there, with the little secure garden, which was not only dog friendly, but Terrier proof, so no escaping, which was reassuring. The cottage is spacious and well laid out, with an exceptionally well equipped kitchen with everything you would need. The upstairs shower/toilet was a great addition, and there was great storage in the upper hallway. Bob the owner was extremely helpful and and gave great info to assist my stay. I felt very comfortable staying there and enjoyed my stay immensely.

  • "As soon as we walked into May Cottage we were delighted by this cosy, quirky little cottage."

The lounge with its lovely fireplace, comfy chair and sofa was ideal for relaxing in the evenings. The kitchen was small and compact, thoughtfully proving us with everything we needed. Through to the sun room, a bright place to sit on a cooler afternoon or evening overlooking the courtyard garden. The double bed was very comfy with nice duvet. Plenty of storage space on the landing. The narrow wet room is very well designed and nice to use. The whole feeling of the house is far more spacious than it really is. There was a bit of early morning traffic but this didn’t worry us. So conveniently placed in the village to the amazing community shop, pubs and Indian restaurant all within about 150m.

  • "The cottage was not very clean and there was a half used bag of ice cubes in the freezer, the wet room was not practical and was all set out wrong."

There was no seat for drying in the wet room so we had to sit on the toilet seat to dry our legs and feet, the toilet seat broke on the last day of our holiday causing scratches to my bottom. The toilet seat was also loose and wobbled every time you sat on it, the water pressure for the shower was pitiful. The front bedroom had poor quality windows and it was like trying to sleep on a motorway with lorries, cars and farm tractors passing all the time through the day and night even on Saturday and Sunday. The small garden was full of weeds and was not managed very well with poorly maintained edges and plants with box blight on them, the owner is setting up some kind of temperature control system witch made all the rooms light even in the middle of the night and made it hard to sleep. Because of these reasons we would not use this cottage or your company ever again.

Thank you for your comments. We provide e-mail addresses and telephone numbers for both Sykes and the owner to be contacted if there are any issues during your stay. Many of the points raised as criticisms are clearly evident from the description and photographs on the Sykes website, or through checking the location on a map or Google Earth. Being surrounded by mainly arable farmland and in the middle of the harvest season, there will be farm traffic from dawn to dusk and beyond. This mid-eighteenth century, Grade II listed cottage has quaint characteristics unique to a property of its age and type. The listing prevents upgrades to windows and other features. My housekeeper takes great pride in presenting the cottage and having it ready to a high standard ready for guests arrival. Thanks Again, Sykes Cottages. Property Owner

The cottage was fully equipped with everything we needed for our short stay there. The owners had left us pizzas tea coffee and sugar on arrival this was a lovely gesture . This cottage is perfect for a small family situated not far from York . We used the cottage as a base and visited a few places within a short drive away from the cottage . We recommend this cottage for a fabulous little break away and look forward to our next stay there .

However we found the double bed so uncomfortable with springs that you could feel when you laid down even though there was a topper on the mattress, this made it impossible for us to have a good night sleep. Also the sofa and chair in the lounge were very well used this made them uncomfortable to relax on ,we found ourselves mainly sitting at the dining room table.

  • "Fantastic holiday in May Cottage and much needed breakaway with our little family ."

I did however feel I was ducking the whole time I was in the cottage, if your tall take note of the sign above the stairs door ! Watch your head ! I also love that you can take you dog and it was great to read about everyone else's experiences in the first book with their doggies. Maybe for future reference a security or outside light maybe useful for night times. The beds were so comfy , I could have stayed in bed all day they were that comfy but having a four year old and a 1 year old spaniel that was never going to happen. The wet room shower was brilliant. The local amenities were great too , ten minutes drive into York itself which was where we ate most nights , my only downside to this holiday was that we didn't stay longer as there are still loads of things we want to do but just didn't have the time for! Thankyou Sykes Cottages.
