    It was in a good area for walkers, including walks direct from the village and a regular bus service to York. Just a short drive from some lovely villages and not far from Castle Howard and 2 National Trust properties. The cottage was warm and cosy so ideal for a Winter Break

    The location is perfect for exploration as well as offering two pub / restaurants within easy walking distance of the cottage. We had our dog with us who loved the woodland walks accessible directly from the village. The cottage offers all you require for a fantastic holiday as well as a base to explore the dales and picturesque villages / towns in the area.

    The Old Forge is immaculate. Tastefully decorated and in an ideal location with two lovely pubs and beautiful dog walks all on your doorstep. Fresh bed linen, towels and a welcome pack made this the perfect find for us to enjoy our wedding anniversary. We would love to stay here again and would highly recommend to others.

    The cottage is a perfect place to explore Yorkshire from; it has all you need to relax and take things easy. A small, but secure garden gives your dog some freedom without any worries. A very quiet and peaceful location. Highly recommended.

    There are lots of walks, country houses and gardens on its doorstep. The bed is super comfy with a great quality duvet. Towels are fluffy and the shower was perfect. The kitchen had everything we needed. I highly recommend this cottage.

    It's an ideal centre point for visiting local attractions and other villages. 2 pubs/restaurants within easy walking distance, there's also an Indian restaurant/takeaway nearby and a chip shop wich was closed while we were there. The host is very thorough and accurate with her instructions. We had a wonderful stay, thank you.

    We were a touch nervous as it was our first holiday (not in our camper van) with our 3yr old dog and my gosh it was perfect. The yard provided a safe space for him to pootle. The property was clean, comfortable, and exactly what we needed. There are so many beautiful walks around stillington and the wider area.

    Thoughtful owner, nothing too much trouble. Lots of lovely surprises on arrival. Great location, used the bus a couple times, the stop is close by. We also visited the welcoming and friendly The White Bear pub a few times. We would love to stay again. Good access, beautiful courtyard garden, safe for our dog too. Somewhere really nice to return to after a busy day out exploring the area, far and wide.

    It is very well presented and immaculately clean. Ideal for a short stay in this beautiful area of Yorkshire. Thanks to the good weather during our visit we were able to make full use of the lovely courtyard garden. The comfortable seating creates a welcoming spot for lazy lunches and early evening drinks. We found the bed to be particularly comfortable and enjoyed good nights sleep due to the very peaceful location. The owner was extremely kind in leaving in leaving a hamper of goodies to welcome us to the Forge, even our little dog was not overlooked as she benefited from a gift of treats. We would certainly recommend the accommodation to others.

    The weather wasn't too kind but the cottage more than made up for it. The Old Forge was beautifully presented and immaculately clean. Wonderful quiet location. Lara has thought of everything to make our stay extremely comfortable. The lovely big rattan table and chairs on the patio was an added bonus and the shower is larger than it looks on the photos which was great. We'll definitely stay again, lovely cottage and host.

    The two local pubs were dog-friendly they both allowed dogs inside and in the gardens. Both pubs provided fresh drinking water for the dog and dog biscuits. The village was beautifully clean and tidy, no litter no eye-sores of any kind. It was peaceful and relaxing in the village. We both enjoyed this holiday very much and would certainly recommend this cottage to other dog-owning people who need a quiet relaxing break.

    Fruit bowl, slotted spoon for the poached egg, cling film, foil, washing up liquid, milk, bread, tea, coffee, sugar, dog bowl, dog biscuits, dog towel, biscuits for humans. Hand wash in bathroom. Cleaning stuff under the sink, yes towels. I have been to so many self catering places and there’s nothing so thank you Lara it was amazing and we will be coming back if you’ll have us Sarah

  • "The cottage is excellent for 2 people in a very quite location."

    The patio is south facing with sun from morning to night.Plenty off street walks around the village.The locals are very friendly. You are spoilt for choice with 2 pubs and fish and chip shop all 3 serve excellent food. There are hourly bus into York and the bus stop is only a few minutes walk from the cottage.We will be recommending this property to friends and family . We certainly would book this property again.

    We arrived on a very cold day after travelling 200miles. The cottage was heated and very welcoming. We had spring flowers in both rooms and a generous basket of refreshments. We would definitely recommend this cottage and hope to return again. This is a great part of Yorkshire to explore.

    We arrived to a very cosy and welcoming cottage which had everything we needed for a short break with our dog, Summer. Lara was very helpful and contacted us soon after our arrival to check that we were happy with everything. We appreciated her nice touches like the welcome hamper and vases of spring flowers in the rooms. As we were only staying for two nights and spending our time exploring the area we treated ourselves to a fish and chip supper from Stillington Fisheries and takeaway curry from the Gulshan Tandoori, which were both only a short walk away and definitely worth a try. Stillington is a nice village and is well located for visiting lovely places like nearby Helmsley and the Yorkshire coast.

  • "The cottage was extremely cold , heating not set right , we turned it on it took over 4 hours to warm up , apart from this it was a cute little cottage ideal for two ."

    nice little extra touches like electric blankets on bed to take of the chill , fluffy blanket to snuggle in really useful . could of had a few extra things in kitchen like a large pot for cooking , colder for straining , wooden spoon and measuring jug for us keen cooks . like the other little touches in kitchen , tin foil for backing very handy all though I did not use it , many times I do a roast dinner so was nice to have this option . the door was extreamly difficult to undo , this was mentioned by other guest in the comments book , so this should be addresses . we loved the very comfy bed , even though it was of a main street it was tucked away enough as not to be noisey . we love Yorkshire , this is about our fourteenth trip and would diffently return to the old forge . there was a nice welcome basket with tea bags , coffee , sugar , bread ect . milk in fridge brilliant could have a cup of tea before stocking up on provision for the week .

    The cottage is very clean and beautifully decorated. Bed was super comfortable. Shower also perfect. Definitely on our lust for return visit. The village pub the white bear. Has top notch food and good prices. Overall our experience was 9/10. Only thing stopped a 10 was no remote for DVD this makes watching box sets very tricky. But don't let it put you off. Lovely place and Lara also lovely.

  • "Lara the owner greeted us on arrival and gave us all the info about this lovely cottage also about the area including the local pubs/post office/Indian restaurant and chip shop all within easy walking distance from the cottage."

    The White bear pub is the place to go for food plus you can take your dog into the bar area. There was fresh milk in the fridge plus in a small hamper there was tea/coffee and chocolate biscuits and leaflets with info about the local area even our small dog molly had a dogs bowl with treats. This lovely cottage had everything that you have at home even heated bed blankets for the chilly evenings. We were about an hour into our 4 hour journey home when my mobile rang it was Lara we had left a bag behind which contained our iPads plus other items so Lara very kindly sent them to us via parcel post.     We unfortunately lost internet connection a couple of days before the end of our stay, but after a text to inform the owner, they were straight round to apologise, even though there was nothing they could do about it. The cottage is ideally situated to explore the surrounding area. We would stay there again and would definitely recommend it.

    The village has great amenities in the form of a post office and village store, two excellent pubs and an Indian restaurant/takeaway. We can particularly recommend Sunday lunch at the Bay Tree. Stillington is centrally located for all the main sightseeing attractions in particular we can recommend Helmsley Walled Garden and Castle. There are also some great walks around Stillington itself if you are taking your four legged friend. The courtyard garden at the property is fully enclosed and secure. We would definitely recommend and stay again.

  • "We loved the old forge!"

    After searching for somewhere that would allow us to take both our small dogs we stumbled upon this online. The hosts were very accommodating and left tea, coffee, milk and dog biscuits in a small hamper for us which was a nice touch. The online pictures could do with an update as the furniture has been painted/changed since we booked this but that being said it was even more cost thanks to the changes! Stillington itself is lovely and picturesque and great if you have dogs thanks to the surrounding fields. Also ideally situated for trips to York. Would definitely recommend.

    The perception is of a very cohesive community. The area is very good for walking - my dog appeared to enjoy the holiday. The cottage is small and, without any solid barrier between the living and sleeping areas, it is difficult to keep a dog out of the bedroom. This I achieved by placing a chair in front of the curtain. The "food hamper" provided by Lara was a great start and the cottage itself has all the facilities anyone would require.

    The Old Forge exceeded our expectations; comfortable, cosy and very clean. The people is Stillington are very friendly and really welcoming. We enjoyed good food at the White Bear, the local Indian restaurant and the nearby Durham Ox in Crayke. We took our dog with us and spent a lot of our time walking in the beautiful countryside. Now we are home, batteries recharged and already looking for our next stay.

    Big enough for 2 but I wouldn't book here longer then a few nights only because its smaller then it looks on the picture not a great lot in the village just 2 pubs. Good base for going to other places

Stillington is a very pretty, small rural village lying half way between York and Helmsley. The village has a Post Office/shop, several high-quality pubs, Indian restaurant, fish and chip shop, hairdressers, sports and social club and antiques showroom. A network of footpaths and bridleways lead from the village to the beautiful surrounding countryside of the Howardian Hills.
