"We had a lovely stay at Hill Top, it is as described, had cosy log fire, well stocked kitchen, lovely welcome pack and Gerry was on hand to welcome us, nothing was too much trouble."
It is on the side of a main road however the noise did not intrude and we had a great stay.

"A lovely relaxing week at Hill Top."
Ali and Gerry were friendly and welcoming and had a left a thoughtful, well stocked welcome pack . The house was beautifully clean, well equipped and comfortable. Great location for visiting the stunning Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, and the lovely market town of Helmsley with its volunteer run Walled Garden. Great independent bookshop and fab deli amongst other lovely local shops and tea rooms. Stonegrave Minister just opposite the house is also worth a visit. We were a group of 4 friends and 2 dogs who wanted peace and quiet away from a week of fireworks and it was perfect for just that. Thank you, Shirley and party. ☺️

"From the moment of arrival and being greeted by the owners, this wonderful cottage was the perfect stay!"
Cosy cottage, beautifully furnished, in an ideal position to explore the area and walk our dogs on many trails, dark sky area which allowed us to see the Northern Lights! The welcome pack of goodies was lovely touch, aswell as a starter pack for the fires (top ups are available at a minimal cost). We loved the fact the owners we nearby for any issues (no issues at all for us) and when we did bump into them, treated as friends. Dispite the cottage on the roadside, there was minimal noise which didn't affect our stay in any way, the cottage has underfloor heating keeping it cosy at all times. All in all....wow....we will definitely be back!

"Hill Tops is a lovely, clean and spacious holiday cottage with some great views."
There are public footpaths nearby with some fantastic views, if you don't mind a climb. The road the cottage is located on can be busy at times, but this didn't bother us. We all really enjoyed our stay.
-
"We had a fantastic stay and Gerry met us on arrival to explain things and point out where walks were for our dogs from the cottage, and just said to ask if we needed the heating on - but no need as the weather was good."
Ali and Gerry were available during the week if we had any requirements. The cottage itself is excellent and the pictures don't do it justice, very well equipped and lots of space. The garden is fully enclosed, so no issues in letting the dogs out. Great to wake up from the really comfy bed to the fantastic views from the cottage. Location is great and just a few minutes from Helmsley (we visited often) and easy reach of a number of other places, it was always nice to return to the cottage after a day of activities to rest and re-charge, in a comfortable environment. We will definitely plan a return visit.

"This is a lovely spacious cottage with amazing views."
Well furnished and very clean. We did however have a problem. When we arrived we were told by the owners that the heating had been turned off as the property was well insulated. Only the towel rails in the two first floor bathrooms would heat up, once in the morning and again in the evening. The terms of the rental agreement quite clearly states that 'Fuel and power is included in the rent'. That being the case why would the owners not show us how to operate the central heating so we could use it when required? There were no written instructions in the cottage either. My wife is ill and through necessity spends a considerable amount of time in the cottage with no means of keeping warm. There were no logs etc for the wood burner unless you were prepared to pay for them. The other concern we had was the intrusive noise from the passing vehicles, the house is only about 4 to 5 feet from the road. This was especially noticeable in the early morning and around tea time.
Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the proximity of the road to the house. The road is clearly evident in the listing photographs and also from any viewing of a map of Stonegrave. Nonetheless we have asked Sykes to update the property details to make this even more explicitly clear and to point out that as a consequence of the road being directly outside the house, road noise will likely be heard. For reference of future guests. We have responded fully and in private to the remaining comments made in this review by Melvyn. We hope that you will read the multitude of preceding reviews and in so doing be reassured that a warm welcome, generous hospitality and willing attentiveness to your needs awaits you should you choose to holiday at Hilltop. The issues detailed by Melvyn in his review could have been and would have been addressed swiftly and completely during the week of his stay, but unfortunately, in spite of us living immediately next door to Hilltop we were not made aware by Melvyn that he was in any way dissatisfied until this review was published days after he and his wife had left. "We have just returned home from our stay in this beautiful property."
. We arrived to a very warm welcome from the hosts Ali and Gerry. The property is very well maintained and spotlessly clean and a lovely welcome pack which was very much appreciated after a long journey , also the garden was a safe environment for our dogs to safely play in the garden and a gate which had fencing wire to stop the dogs getting out into the road . The property had stunning views of the countryside, lovely way to wake up to in the morning. We were travelling with my mum who is elderly , she had a pain in her back , Ali was quickly on hand and was so helpful and ran over with hit water bottles and cushions , thank you so much. Well , what can i say about Hovingham?! So so beautiful , i would go as far as saying that it is the most beautiful village i have so far visited in England. The Hovingham Bakery is a must , cakes to die for and also their bread, delicious!! There is a market here on Saturdays which is also a must , full of lovely stalls . I thought the village and surrounding areas was spotlessly clean with beautiful properties, if we could afford it we would certainly move to this quaint , gorgeous place. Oh , and just before i forget , the beds were the most comfortable beds we have slept in!! Slept like babies every night!! Thanks again A&G xxx

"Stunning property in an ideal location for our activities."
We will go back in the future.

"A very well equipped cottage with space to sit in two areas (nice for reading a book) and a separate dining area…the space outside was perfect for any meal/drinks and great dog walks."
Parking tight for two cars if one is large!
-
"It was a great stay in a lovely house."
Very nice decor and everything you could need. Many thanks
-
"3 of us visited Hill Top and all of us enjoyed the stay, the owners just next door, where available should you have any problems."
The cottage was very clean and comfortable, a lot of thought had gone into how the cottage looked and felt, the hamper with a few essentials was a bonus. The bread was lovely, even the dog had some treats. We loved the views from the cottage and the back garden was dog secure for all sizes. The Off road parking had enough space for a large 4x4. All in all a lovely location and a comfortable cottage with all the mod cons.

"Great cottage in great location owners very welcoming and everything you would ..."
Great cottage in great location owners very welcoming and everything you would want and expect was there in the cottage

"Hilltop is a lovely property in an ideal location."
Plenty of dog-friendly walks from the front door with fantastic scenery. Also only a short drive away to local attractions (Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Scarborough etc). The cottage was clean, comfortable and provided everything we needed. Our two dogs loved the large secure garden (much larger then what the photos show). The hamper with fresh local produce was a lovely touch and the owners even left a jar of biscuits for the dogs! You can see a lot of thought has gone into this holiday property with all the little touches by the owners. Ali and Gerry, I look forward to returning here again for my next holiday :-)
-
"Hilltop is a lovely property with easy access for all attractions."
We visited Brimham Rocks, Castle Howard, Pateley Bridge, Ampleforth Abbey, Eden Camp and did the Daffodil Walk through Farndale. It was great to come ‘home’ to Hilltop with its comfortable seating and beds. The house is equipped with everything that you could possibly need, and more. The garden is fully enclosed to keep your dog safe. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful base for our holiday Gerry and Ali. We will certainly return to Hilltop soon.
-
"This was our second stay at hilltop cottage enjoyed every minute Ali and Gerry are lovely, will go back soon"
-
"First class stay: our second visit over a New Year period."
Lovely property, exceptionally well equipped. Dog friendly. Helpful owners just next door: friendly and responsive. Highly recommended.
-
"We loved our time spent in Hill Top."
It’s a very clean and comfortable cottage with the most beautiful views from the front looking out over Stonegrave Minster. It’s very well equipped and the owners were very helpful but not at all intrusive. We would definitely recommend it and would love to return at some point.
-
"We’ve stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and this has taken top spot."
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, shame lots of others think the same - no availability for next May ☹️
-
"Hilltop is perfectly situated for days out exploring the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors, between Malton and Helmsley near the lovely village of Hovingham."
The cottage is beautiful and very well thought out, it is comfortable and nicely decorated, well equipped and well furnished. We genuinely loved this property and will be returning. We had a couple of reservations before we arrived. 1 - The pictures of the garden don’t make it look very secure if you are visiting with your 4 legged friends. The garden is in fact quite secure, it was perfect for our medium sized dogs. 2 - The comfort of the beds. We all like a good nights sleep when we are on our hols, after seeing another quite scathing review we were concerned about the beds especially as 2 of our party normally struggle with this type of thing. We had absolutely no need for concern, the beds are exceptionally comfortable and we all slept fantastically. I know that bed comfort is very subjective but the quality and mattresses and beds at Hilltop are fantastic. Ali & Gerry the property owners are lovely, and we all greatly enjoyed our chats. Simply one of the best holiday cottages we have visited. The Northern Lights and “Steve” showing up on our trip was an added bonus.
-
"Perfect! Thank you so much, the cottage was beautiful, so cosy, comfortable and spotlessly clean."
Perfect stay for lovely attractions and coming home to a log fire was just the best.
-
"We had a fantastic week at Hill Top which is a perfect base to explore the Moors and surrounding area."
The accommodation is very well equipped and has everything you need to feel properly at home. It has amazing views and is lovely cosy accommodation to return to with very comfortable beds for a good nights sleep. We were a party of 6 and had one rainy "rest" day from mountain biking and walking, and Hill Top had the space for us to have 3 different activities going on without being in each others way. We were warmly greeted by Ali and Gerry, nothing was too much trouble during our stay and we will definitely be looking to book again.
-
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful area."
There was a very generous welcome pack for us on our arrival. Plenty of places to visit & a comfy house to return to after a busy day out.
-
"We found the mattresses uncomfortable."
I think they need upgrading. The owners were extremely helpful and really nice people.we will come back if in Yorkshire!
Thank you for your feedback. We take the comfort of our guests very seriously. Whilst mattress comfort is entirely subjective, we would like to reassure future guests that all of the mattresses in Hilltop are a quality brand. Each mattress turned and cleaned regularly and each is between eight months and three years old. Property Owner

"Had a great week in Yorkshire staying at Hill Top, which was a beautiful cottage, with everything we needed."
We enjoyed our early morning walks / runs along the old railway line to Hovingham and a stop off at the Bakery! Thanks Ali for telling us about this route. Lots of other paths were also accessible from the Cottage. Great location for exploring the area. Ali & Gerry were great hosts. Thanks for the bread, jam, butter, milk, tea and biscuits. Excellent Italian bistro "La Trattoria" in Helmsley.
-
"The property was well finished with comfy beds."
Gorgeous views from the front rooms. It was in a wonderful location for walks locally and also within a short drive and some beautiful places worth visiting such as Castle Howard, Hovingham, Nunnington. I would stay in the property again. Ali and Jerry the home owners are very helpful but not intrusive in any way. There was a nice touch with butter, bread, milk, cake and some jams when we arrived. There were even a few treats for the dogs. It's worth doing a supermarket delivery when you arrive as there are no supermarkets locally. The nearest big supermarket is in Malton. All in all, it was a lovely place to stay.
-
"Great cottage, lovely owners."
Everything you could need in a cottage. Location perfect for us. Great day in Dalby forest biking and go ape, day in Scarborough. Lovely browse round Helmsley. Fantastic North Yorkshire we will be back.
-
"This is a superb cottage, ideally located close to towns (Helmsley is 10 mins drives away)."
The owners live next door and nothing is too much of bother for them. The cottage is well equipped (it even has an egg slicer and colander in the kitchen but best of all it had. A mocka pot so I must say they have certainly thought of everything ). It was very clean and well presented with lovely views of the suttounding countryside as well as excellent walks straight from the cottage. Yes it is on a main road but honestly it is not an issue. This was our 2nd visit and we are already planning our next. They is plenty of wildlife to see as well we seen rabbits, deer, fox, buzzards, otters, horses, cows, herons and of course plenty of sheep. Give this cottage a try, I promise you that you won't be disappointed
-
"We had a fabulous holiday."
The owners were very friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble if we had any questions. The property was spotless and is in a great location with stunning views. We will definitely be booking again sometime in the near future.
-
"What a beautiful property!"
Spotless, had everything we needed and more. Amazing hosts who were on hand for anything we needed. Highly recommend and will be visiting again
-
"This is a first rate holiday cottage and was a great choice for a New Year break."
It’s well designed, spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The owners welcomed us and were totally unobtrusive, even though they lived next door. It’s ideal for dog owners with enclosed outdoor space and easy access to rural walks. We were a party of 3 adults and 2 dogs: the cottage would be very comfortable for 6 adults as there’s lots of space to sit and eat. Highly recommended.
-
"A lovely property with everything you need, you can even buy wood from the owner."
Peaceful location. Thank you to Gerry for helping us out with a puncture too!

It was cosily furnished and was in a great location for our many trips visiting various parts of stunning Yorkshire. Would definitely recommend to others and would stay again in a heart beat. Ali and Gerry were helpful and informative whilst not being intrusive. A perfect stay!

"A real home from home."
ALi and Gerry were very welcoming and the cake and wine at the beginning of the second week was a very nice touch. North Yorkshire is a lovely area with plenty to see and do. We would certainly consider Hill Top for a holiday again.
-
"Immaculate cottage set in a stunning location."
Spacious property with a lovely back garden to enjoy on sunny day. Parking on the drive. Kitchen well equipped if you’re eating in. We would be happy to return to this cottage if we’re in this area again.
-
"Lovely cottage ,very well equipped, beautiful surroundings and the owners were very nice and helpful ,would highly recommend."
-
"The cottage was great."
Very clean, very comfortable. It is advisable to reverse into the drive because reversing into the road is extremely dodgy. The only negative comment I have is the stairs are a bit steep for us oldies, otherwise perfect.
-
"We had a great week at Hilltop."
Owners Gerry and Ali were very welcoming, friendly and helpful, offering advice re local places to eat /visit etc. Wonderful views over the hills from the cottage and well placed for visiting many places round and about, including the seaside!
-
"A lovely and comfortable cottage which was well equipped and clean."
The owners were extremely helpful and friendly. The location was perfect and the surrounding countryside and villages were idyllic. The only downside was the busy main road right outside the front door and the constant sound of traffic.
-
"What a great property and location to explore North Yorkshire."
We will definitely be back again.
-
"Exceptional holiday cottage!"
Everything has been thought of for your convenience and comfort. Ali and Gerry were there to meet and greet us, providing information on the house and the local area which was great and the hamper was such a lovely touch. The walks from the property were fabulous, both our dogs were in heaven having the countryside on the doorstep. We will definitely be back! All in all.. a perfect week away, thanks to the hosts, accommodation and location, thank you Ali and Gerry.
-
"Ideally located for York and the countryside, we were a group of 6 with 2 dogs the house was perfect and had all the amenities."

"The owners were incredibly accomodating and can't recommend this cottage enough!"
Incredibly clean and spacious, perfect for a group of 5 plus a dog. Also had a lovely hamper on arrival. Beautiful views of the church and nice walks in the local area. Good area to discover more of Yorkshire.
-
"Great cottage for the family and the owners made us feel very welcome."
-
"We enjoyed the cottage very much; it is perfectly positioned for visiting relatives as well as sight-seeing."
It is comfortable, stylish and welcoming. We will be back.
-
"Hilltop was a perfect base for a very busy week."
Location was excellent and meant we where never far from a days activity. With 3 children from 2 to 7 years it was plenty big enough and provided every comfort we could have wanted. The road outside is close but the owners have positioned the garden gate very well and was not a problem accessing the cottage from the backdoor. The driveway is tight is like us you have two massive cars. However owners where very accommodating and supplied extra parking when I couldn't fit on the driveway!! A really great house and perfectly set up. Highly recommend it.
-
"The cottage was great far exceeded the photos."
The owners Ali and Gerry were very welcoming and helpful. The welcome pack was a lovely addition. We would happily recommend the cottage; in fact we already have!
-
"This is a lovely house, so easy to live in and the perfect holiday home."
Everything you need is here and easy to find. What was even more impressive is that when the hot water broke down, Ali and Gerry spent their whole evening in the rain trying to fix the boiler and when the hot water system refused to be helpful to them, they offered us the shower in the cottage next door until the plumber could get to fix the system. This was so helpful and kind. They did absolutely everything they could and they gave us a couple of bottles of wine and chocolates. They really could not have done more to help, the were the perfect hosts. Things go wrong at home and in all houses and hotels. It is the way of the world but the true metal is how the problem is dealt with and they were perfect.
-
"Excellent cottage renovated to the highest standards."
Everything was exceptionally clean and the beds were comfy - which is so often not the case in holiday cottages. There was a lovely welcome pack in the kitchen too. Ali and Gerry were very welcoming and gave us lots of ideas of where to go that was wheelchair accessible. Thoroughly recommend.
-
"Hilltop is a lovely cottage in a fantastic location."
Would highly recommend if you have dogs as well.
-
"Beautiful, scenic holiday stay."

-
"The perfect base to visit this beautiful area."
Cottage is completely faultless; Ali and Gerry are very thoughtful and obliging. This was my second stay and I’ve rebooked already, a little corner of heaven.
-

A really good welcome and included a good welcome pack.
-
"A lovely cottage with fabulous views."
-
"We absolutely loved our stay at Hill top cottage, the owners were so helpful, even sourcing us something we had forgotten late one evening."
The cottage is gorgeous, and was so clean, with all details thought of. We don't have a fog, so I am sometimes put off when places are dog friendly, but the cottage was so very clean. Booking was easy, and the staff at sykes were very helpful. We will definitely be going back.
-
"We had such a lovely week staying at this cottage."
The house was spotlessly clean and is really spacious with a fantastic view and is ideally located for exploring the local area. The owners Ali and Gerry are lovely and provided great suggestions of dog walks and places to visit. They also left a welcome pack of treats and essentials which was a pleasant surprise. Our enjoyment wasn't hindered by Covid or the weather - we enjoyed the slower pace of life, walking in the day (squeezing in a pub trip or two in nearby Hovingham) and spent many evenings by the fire. Our pup had a great time too! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage and would love to return in future.
-
"Hill top cottage is one of the best cottages we have stayed in, spacious and comfortable, loved the snug area off the kitchen."
The master bedroom was larger than expected with great en-suite. Lovely views from front bedrooms of Stonegrave minster got some great pictures of the setting sun. Our two small dogs enjoyed the secure back garden and the country walks. The bridlepath walk starting from brook side road at Hovingham village is great and there is a children play area there as well. The small local bakery next to the path is also worth a vIsit. The owners Ali and Gerry met us there when we arrived helped us to make the most of the cottage and our stay. Would Highly recommend.
-
"Very nice location."
We were given a warm welcome and a lovely welcome pack. A very nice accommodation. Spacious, nicely furnished. Impeccable cleanliness. Impressed with the security of the rear garden which allowed us to let our dog out of the property with confidence. we had a lovely break, thank you.
-
"We had a fantastic week at Hilltop, the weather was kind to us and were able to get out and about."
There is so much to do in what was a new area of Yorkshire for us. The cottage was lovely and the owners very helpful, there are walks from the door and the next village along has the best bakery. We would both love to return in the future.
-
"Our return visit did not disappoint!"
Despite the current challenges we still experienced a warm welcome from Ali and Gerry. Hilltop is an excellent base for enjoying the city of York, the beautiful Howardian Hills, and the North Yorkshire coast.
-
"The owners are incredibly friendly and always happy to answer questions, provided advice about the area and did all they could to make us feel at home."
Will probably visit again.
-
"Our stay at Hilltop was wonderful, we all enjoyed the break."
Lovely cottage & friendly hospitable owners.
-
"The cottage was absolutely brilliant and one of the best we've stayed in."
Owners were so helpful and friendly and have created a perfect family getaway. It was an ideal base for exploring the area and a wonderful home to return to at night. The whole family loved it and I would definitely return again.
-
"Hilltop is such a beautiful house in such a beautiful location, the views are amazing."
The house is so comfortable and has everything you need, it is so beautifully furnished with very comfortable beds. The cottage is so much more spacious than it looks. The owners are such nice people, very helpful and we really appreciated the welcome supplies particularly the ones for our dog! Cant recommend enough and we are looking forward to returning.
-
"We had a fantastic time."
The property was wonderful, our young adult family (four 19 - 25yr olds, stayed 2 nights) all said how much they liked it. We enjoyed a family meal in the dining room as part of a birthday celebration. The dogs had plenty of space and the enclosed garden was perfect. Surrounding area was beautiful, great walks, castles, teas and dog friendly pubs in striking distance.
-
"Location! Location!"
Location! Hill Top is a great place to stay when exploring North Yorkshire - handy for lovely places such as Castle Howard, Harrogate and York and the east coast resorts of Scarborough and Whitby. There are good dog walking places close by, too.
-
"The cottage was great and met our needs perfectly."
Great welcome pack. The owners where welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our two dogs had a lovey stay too with dog treats, poo bags and a dog towel provided. Spacious but cosy especially with log burning. Overall a lovely weekend at Hill Top.
-
"I would like to say the cottage was wonderful and Ali and Gerry were very nice and helpful with dogs 100%Wood return."
-
"Fantastic cottage, lovely location and very accommodating owners!"
What's not to like? Far exceeded our expectations, we went with the intention of taking our dog away from the fireworks and never heard a thing - mission accomplished! Lovely pub lunches, relaxing evenings in front of the log burner, can't wait to go back
-
"The cottage was lovely - spacious and cosy."
The owners were welcoming and helpful with any questions that we had. The location is good - view of open countryside, but short drive to Malton and Helmsley. We would definitely go back.

"The cottage is beautiful and very well equipped."
Ali and Gerry were so warm and welcoming, we had milk, bread, butter, jam, marmalade and eggs provided on arrival. My mum owned a small hotel for many years and was very impressed with the cleanliness. I recommend this house 100%. 11 out of 10. Thank you so much.
-
"Very close to Helmsley approx 10mins drive which was a small picturesque village with lots of restaurants serving food into the evening, and a lovely deli and sandwich shop serving homemade pies and quiche, including wines and local gin."
There is a castle and gardens within walking distance with picnic facilities . Beautiful location of the cottage looking out across the local church and fields beyond, about 20 mins to Pickering station for steam enthusiasts where you can travel to Whitby, or watch from Goathland to see it steam across the moors. York had a great park and ride about 30mins by car, easy parking and direct drop off, Shambles, York Minster the Railway Museum.
