The peaceful hamlet of Thorgill is close to the centre of the national park, and is within easy reach of numerous walking and cycling routes through magnificent rolling countryside, including Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast, the Cleveland Way and the Lyke Wake Walk, as well as the National Trust's Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping and the enchanting Dalby Forest.

The market town of Kirkbymoorside is just outside of the national park, offering a great selection of shops, tearooms, pubs, restaurants and a weekly market, held on a Wednesday, while nearby Pickering, on the fringes of the moors, has a 13th century castle with a tower, offering stunning views, as well as a social history museum.

Other nearby attractions to note include Flamingo Land, a family-friendly theme park, and the National Trust's Nunnington Hall, a magnificent manor house with meadows and a walled garden to explore.

The North Yorkshire coastline is a brief drive away, where you can choose from a variety of popular resorts and lovely sandy beaches, with Filey, Scarborough and Whitby all in easy reach.

The attractive old market town of Kirkbymoorside lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, in between the towns of Helmsley and Pickering. It is a charming place, full of Yorkshire character, and is the centre for the local farms and villages. Visitors will find a variety of shops from tea rooms, pubs and restaurants to antique shops, while there is a market day on Wednesday. The excellent walking and magnificent scenery of the National Park are close by, as are the picturesque villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham. Pickering is the base of the North York Moors Steam Railway - a ‘must do’ day out for all visitors to the area. Castle Howard, York, Whitby and the Yorkshire Coast are within easy driving distance.
