  • "This cottage is lovely, not luxurious but nearly."

We have a lovely week we have cooked for ourselves, eaten at the castle on various occasions eating the most delicious meals. Also down the road was the fabulous archers ice cream parlour. It is also in a good position to explore North Yorkshire, Durham and North East. The staff at the hotel are great and very helpful.

  • "The property was very much as described and we enjoyed our stay."

There are, however, two issues worth noting. First, the mattresses on the beds were of poor quality and rather uncomfortable. Second, the hot tub cover was difficult to remove and return because it didn’t have the customary support frame. This needs attention otherwise the cover will be damaged and someone will hurt their back trying to lift it in a very confined space.

  • "The cottage itself was lovely, though a little worn with the paint work, bathroom floor and tired furniture."

Unfortunately, the staff we encountered at the hotel were rather cold and did not make us feel welcome. We were hoping that we'd be able to order dinner from the hotel menu and then collect/have it delivered to eat in the cottage, unfortunately we were told this was not an option and eating in the hotel wasn't an option as we had our dog with us in the cottage. The pre authorised £150 damage bond is completely understandable, though we were under the impression it wouldn't actually take the money from the account, it did and we now have to wait up to 10 days for this to be returned to us which is incredibly frustrating.

  • "All in all, had a lovely stay at the cottage."

The cottage is well equipped and immaculate and in a gorgeous location. Rooms are spacious and fairly modern but a couple of things let it down. As mentioned on a previous review, the outside lighting to the hot tub needs seriously looking in to before there is an accident. There is an outside light at the opposite end of the yard but this isn't bright enough to light the hot tub area at all. The double bed in the main bedroom is very uncomfortable and you can really feel every spring in the mattress. If these couple of gripes were looked into, I would definitely return again.

We stayed here with friends and had a great time. The addition of the hot tub was excellent. The cottage is clean and comfortable. It could do with some finishing touches, like outside lights and door mats and the access to the back yard via the small twin is a bit inconvenient, but these are minor. The grounds of the hotel are nice too.

The pillows and mattress were hard and quite uncomfortable. The lounge would benefit from a side table for drinks. The grounds and play area at the hotel were well maintained and great for the dog and children. The hot tub was very clean and ready to use on arrival. It was disappointing not to have any local information in the property. I asked at reception for recommendations for lunch and walks nearby but they couldn’t help. Would highly recommend the local farm shop and cafe and Archers ice cream shop, which are both couple of minutes drive.

On arrival the receptionist and staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, providing instructions, Restraunt bookings and keys. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and well equipped with a welcome bottle of wine and team and coffee. The garden was enclosed, so good for our two dogs to wander around, and the beds and facilities were comfortable and well maintained. The hot tub… ‘great’ and ready to use, and well shielded from the grounds. We had two meals and a breakfast at the hotel, which were excellent and not expensive. Most of all I must mention the friendliness of all the staff; the receptionist was great as was the restaurant manager and staff. Highly recommend; and take no heed of the previous comments as everything was in good working order; strong Wi-Fi signal and spotless. We will be recommending this cottage to our friends and family.

Food in the hotel was very good too. We found a few issues with the cottage. The windows were dirty inside and outside. The furniture was not comfortable and the cushions in the lounge were very dated and grubby. We had to ask for replacement frying pans and oven trays as they were very dirty and old. The double bed was very also uncomfortable.

Dear Kathleen, Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am pleased that you found the location to be to your liking and found the hotel staff to be helpful. Regarding the issues of us providing replacement frying pans and baking trays. We did actually replace the frying pans but I have looked and there was absolutely nothing with the original ones, and the same with the baking trays. They are not going to be brand new but they are completely acceptable as our housekeeping team wrap them in foil between each visit and they show very little use. I understand that decor is a personal preference but I can assure you that they are all very clean. Running a hotel, cleanliness is a number one priority and something we take pride in. Again thank you for your comments. Property Owner

The hot tub is the main reason for our stay. It is serviced regularly, twice during our stay. We turn the light on in the bedroom to give extra light for getting into the hot tub. The sky is so clear with no light pollution and it’s so relaxing to look at the stars. Any more outside lights I feel would spoil this. The cottage is always immaculately clean. Just a couple of minor things. An outside light near the hot tub would be good when using in the Winter months as the only outside light is at the far end of the yard and it's not very bright. The hot tub would benefit from a gazebo for extra cover as well. An extra baking tray would be useful as there is only one plus a roasting tin. There is some coving missing from the double bedroom. Overall I would go back and it was lovely warm, woods to walk the dogs in as well as other walks nearby.

A few small short comings which would have made a big difference including door mats (specially as the door to the outside space and hot tub comes straight into the 2nd bedroom) and a broom for keeping the hard wood floors cleaner would have been appreciated. The bed in the main bedroom is great unless you and taller than 5’6’’ as the design has a wooden bar across the bottom, unfortunately my partner is 6’4’’ and so just didn’t fit! My main gripe was the curtain across the front door has been removed so anyone outside can see straight in to the bedroom and bathroom doors and corridor. Overall it is a nice cottage, in beautiful grounds of the hotel with a lovely woodland walk and small playground for the kids on site.

  • "I am sorry to say that i did not enjoy my holiday at Walworth cottage at all."

I have booked with Sykes cottages previously, but would think twice about booking again because of this experience. If you check your records, you will see that 4 weeks prior to my holiday, I spoke to a member of Sykes cottages staff. I asked if they could forward a message to the owner of the cottage regarding a sun cover near the hot tub. I have to keep out of direct sunlight, and because I had seen a previous review on the website of someone else complaining about this very issue, I wanted to get something in place before my holiday. However, I was informed that the company did not think that this was an issue. (Despite a previous review letting them know that this was an issue). Therefore, I could not use the hot tub at all and this ruined the holiday for my husband and I. Also, I had to make 4 requests for a member of staff to come to the cottage and fix the T.V., as we couldn’t get a signal at all. I wouldn’t normally be bothered about T.V. When I am on holiday, but unfortunately, I wasn’t very well and spent a lot of time in the cottage with no T.V. Or entertainment services whatsoever. The company cannot keep blaming COVID for everything they are lacking, as the cottage I was at last year had plenty of DVD’s, games and books to read. No one bothered to come and have a look at the T.V. or inform us that there was a problem with the T.V. until our final request when it was too late. This should have been pointed out to us before our holiday. Finally, the outdoor hot tub space was very shabby and unkempt, another previous review complaint, which foolishly I failed to take notice of. I wouldn’t recommend this cottage to anyone in its present condition and it definitely was not worth the money. In fact, when I am feeling a bit better, I intend to put my own review on the website. Please could you let me know when you have received this feedback as this is the 4th message I have sent and I have also rang Sykes cottages twice without success. Thank you. Mrs S Wake.

The cottage, though clean, was a little tired and needs updating particularly the bathroom where there is a lot of grout missing from floor tiles and stains on the bath panel. The living/kitchen/dining area is quite small, the master bedroom is however very roomy, it’s a pity there was no en-suite as there is plenty of room in this bedroom. Beds were very comfortable. The TV speakers rattled and we struggled to hear it. The WiFi was intermittent, with a good connection some days but nothing at all on others. Outside there is a secluded yard which acts as a sun trap, this had some garden furniture and a base for a parasol but no parasol. The hot tub was large and worked well, but like the rest of the cottage, a little rough around the edges, the headrests were worn as was the control panel. The hoover didn’t work. This place could be nice with a little attention to detail.

  • "A faded gem."

We first visited this cottage around 3-4 years ago. This was our third visit as it's in a perfect location for us and gives a hot tub break at a reasonable price in off peak season. Cleanliness was still great as it always has been, but having loved our first stay here this place is really in need of an update. My above average scores are largely based on cost, the hot tub, and having the hotel restaurants on site for a meal. As was the case back on our first stay, WiFi is still awful and not dedicated to the cottage. Each visit we raise the WiFi problem and each visit they're 'experiencing problems'. We booked in full knowledge we'd rely on our mobile phones this trip. The hot tub and bathroom and kitchen are starting to look tired and there was a permanent fault displayed on the hot tub. On our first night, the oven took well over an hour to warm up and was incredibly noisy, utensils/trays etc are limited too. Something also needs to be done about the wasp situation which again has long been an issue and I think could easily be resolved by removing the foliage attracting them directly behind the hot tub site. A sun shade for the patio would be great too. I'm writing this review a while after our Oct 2020 stay so can't comment for whether any work has since been done. Only if the management were to revamp amenities would we return now. I do really recommend the restaurants though. Lovely Sunday lunch.

The hoover was broken (the handle came completely away from the main body of the hoover) which made it very difficult to use as you have to hold the main body of the hoover to manoeuvre it around. The toilet seat was very loose, the shower leaked terribly meaning we had to put towels down on the floor and put these out to dry each day. The freezer door in the fridge was broken so if you wanted to use the freezer section you had to lift it away and reattach it! The property had only enough towels for each person to shower/bathe so when we used the hot tub we then couldn't find a dry towel and vice versa and there is no facility within the property to dry these meaning we were having to hang them over the garden chairs and hope it didn't rain so they would dry. There are not enough cups and bowls, cutlery in the property (ie there were only 5 mugs, 1 of which was chipped) so we were either constantly washing them or having to put the dishwasher on more than once a day, half full, so we could have cups and spoons for tea making etc. All of these are small issues but this was an expensive property and our guests did comment on how these were disappointing issues considering the price. It is also worth mentioning that there are instructions in the property to say the hot tub would be maintained between 10am and 4pm each Thursday which we thought was odd as surely this could be done on changeover day. We therefore expected to be disturbed all day that day. We weren't but were distracted by the possibility someone would be turning up and unable to enjoy our last full day in the property. Finally the road at the front of the property is the access road for staff parking and deliveries and we had large vehicles speeding up and down it every day. This should definitely be included in the property information as anyone with a young child or dog would need to watch out for this.

  • "This is the third time we have spent a holiday in this delightful cottage in a fabulous area, we found a little maintenance is needed on this visit but the staff up at the castle are aware and couldn't do enough to help and took details of problems, even had a personal visit from the housekeeper which was a lovely touch."

  • "We stayed at this cottage over Easter with our daughter and 2 dogs."

The cottage was very clean, tidy and ready for our arrival. We had been left eggs, bread, tea & coffee plus washing up essentials and spare bin bags. All towels were provided along with bed linen and the heating was on! We checked in at the Castle Hotel reception and a member of staff called a few minutes later to show us around and also how to use the hot tub (which is a lovely added extra!). The location of the cottage was ideal as we were only 30 minutes drive from the Coast or 30 minutes from some wonderful walks in the Dales. Just 2 minutes drive up the road is a fantastic Ice Cream parlour where you can sit in for waffles, crepes, coffees etc or takeaway ice cream. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant with having the dogs however the cottage was well equipped for us to make our own meals. If I only had one issue (which is just a point for people with dogs) is the back garden is all paved and my dogs won't 'go' on pavement so we had to use the back gate to a grass area away from the grounds. We kept them on a lead when doing this as people could walk past to their cars, but it didn't take anything away from the cottage, more of a pointer if you have fussy dogs! Also you don't get much passing traffic / people where the cottage is situated as I wondered this, you can just hear the cars on the gravel. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would love to return in the future.

  • "The holiday cottage and location are spot on."

The only negative is the large garage behind the property that the hotel use as a store room for furniture etc that is no longer usable. This is also outside the garage at the back. Although you have a enclosed back yard with hot tub in you can't see it unless you wander around the back of the property. This was the only negative. The staff at castle hotel the grounds location and cottage were a dream. And i would definately visit again. I didn't find the large garage an issue located so close to cottage but the heaped furniture behind it I Did! Sorry

It was homely, tastefully decorated, private, clean, well equipped ... ticked every box for us. The hot tub was great and in a well covered private back garden. The grounds are beautiful and the staff lovely, they can’t do enough for you! We had Sunday Dinner at the Castle too and would definitely recommend. It was so nice that we would definitely return and we never go to the same place twice! Great cottage in an amazing location.

  • "Stunning cottage beautiful place."

Only downside was couldn't use the hot tub as much as we would of liked due to a plague of wasps. Think this was from the mess the other side of the fence behind the hot tub . Shame they couldnt keep this as tidy as the rest of the grounds.Six wasps ended up in hot tub !. Wifi is non existent only available in the castle. On arrival we couldn't use the fridge aa the ice box was so badly iced up it forced the door open and therefore you couldn't shut the fridge door. Took 1 hour to defrost this . Apart from this place is lovely.

Cottage was lovely...clean, comfortable and nicely decorated/furnished. Hot-tub was a treat. Staff at the Castle Hotel were really friendly and helpful. The Bird of Prey Centre (1 min walk ) was a really good day out and is close enough to pop back for lunch etc. Everyone there was friendly too. Would come back again, booking was easy and spoke to very friendly person on phone. Just one thing...advert said there was a selection of books, games and DVD's and there were none of any.
