  • "We had a lovely stay."

The information booklet was very helpful and detailed, giving useful information like where the dishwasher tablets were kept. Instructions about how to use the oven would have been helpful, as I am not familiar with that type of oven. Overall, the properties was beautiful, and the lovely welcome pack was a lovely finishing touch.

We are delighted that you had a lovely stay, enjoyed the welcome pack, found the property beautiful and information booklet useful. We are sorry the oven's instructions were not easily accessible, for future reference they are in the drawer to the right of the cooker, Property Owner

  • "This is quite difficult becasue we loved the Fisherman's Warehouse - it's really nicely-designed and comfortable, lovely and warm and in a great location."

But it was let down by a couple of things : the toilet seat in the upstairs shower room didn't fit the base so you were sitting on the base as well as the seat. And it wasn't terribly well cleaned. We appreciate that it's difficult with a quick turn-around between residents but you shouldn't have to dust in a property on arrival, or wash glasses before they're used (some of the glasses were filthy!).

We are glad that you loved Fisherman's Warehouse and found it really nicely-designed and comfortable, lovely and warm and in a great location. We are sorry that you did not raise the poor quality of cleaning with the agents during your visit as a fresh clean could have been arranged as we had missed that dirty glasses had been put away in cupboards. We have also taken into consideration your comment in relation to the upstairs toilet seat and will be arranging a new seat. Thank you for your feedback it always helps us to improve our offering. Simply perfect. The accommodation was spacious, well-designed and fully equipped. There wasn't anything we needed that wasn't on hand and I was even able to have my gin and tonic on our first evening there thanks to the plentiful ice cubes in the freezer! On arrival, the welcome bag which was full of local goodies was a nice touch and a lovely surprise. 10 out 10!

Couple of small issues, the patio needed a little work for us to be able to use it. A pressure washer and a coat of paint plus a good weed wouldn’t have taken long. When someone walked on the kitchen floor the noise when you are in bed below was enough to wake the dead. We had a great time and would go back again.

We have stayed in several rentals in Whitby but this is by far the best, space and views, and lovely terrace to sit out on in the sun. Unlike many Whitby properties it was lovely and quiet too, no street noise. We purchased a parking permit from tourist info so we’re able to park in Cliffs St car park, which was perfect for arriving/departing and trips out.

There was everything you would need in the modern kitchen. In the lounge comfortable settee and chairs with a large modern smart television. This was not shown in the pictures. Only used the main bedroom but the bed was so comfortable as were the pillows. The cottage is in a great position for shops, cafes and bars and only a short walk down to Whitby harbour.

  • "This is the second time we have stayed at Fishermans Warehouse, and many times that we have used Sykes."

We were happy with the holiday accommodation and found the property interior description to be accurate and the booking process quite straightforward. The staff team were helpful, friendly and efficient. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and warm. The bedding/towels etc of good quality. The location was perfect for us and parking with the permit was made easy. Our only disappointment was the outdoor space, balcony, which once again looked unkept and not suitable to sit on if the weather had been fine. This was the same as our experience in the summer. There were weeds, dirty furniture and wet dirty outside cushions in place. Seagulls typically had left their marks on the outside furniture, while understandable at the coast, the area had not been prepared for visitors. Such a shame. We would however stay again and request that the outside area was cleaned and suitable to use should we wish to do so.

We are very pleased that you were happy with the accommodation, finding it comfortable, clean and warm and that the staff team were helpful, friendly and efficient. We are sorry to hear that the outside area had not been prepared to a suitable standard and we are working to put in place more regular outside cleaning to improve the experience for guests Property Owner

  • "The cottage itself was really nice and had everything we needed for our break."

We all enjoyed our stay and would return again. The cottage was modern, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The view was wonderful and the location perfect for us. The welcome pack was a lovely gesture and full of local goodies . Our ratings reflect the entrance porch and the patio area. The porch was the only way to access the cottage. The porch was unkempt with old leaves and dirt on the floor and spiders webs on the gate and door frame. The front door window was dirty. The porch had two very dirty and smelly dustbins. Flies were constantly around the bins even though we spayed the area ,and as we entered and exited the property it was difficult to avoid the flies. Three members of our group were bitten during our stay. Had we first seen the porch before booking we would not have booked. That would of course have been a shame as the interior was so clean and comfortable. The outside patio area was a also unkempt and not as inviting as the photographs suggested.

I am sorry that both the entrance porch and patio area were unkempt and have highlighted the importance of both first impressions and cleanliness to our cleaning staff. I am glad you found the interior clean and comfortable. Property Owner

The views are amazing and the location is very good with short walks to the beach and shops. Parking is difficult but we could always find a space fairly quickly. The owners provided us with lots of information and a nice „survival kit“. The flat was clean, however, there was a bit of dust from recent painting. The creaking floorboards in the kitchen were a bit of a problem while our baby was sleeping but that’s just a minor thing. There was lots of space to store all our luggage and having a washing machine and tumble dryer was a big bonus. We really liked the big entrance area with lots of space for the buggy , beach equipment and shoes. The apparently brand new upstairs bathroom was very nice. All in all we had a lovely stay and the flat was a really good base for our day trips to the Yorkshire Moors, Robin Hood‘s Bay or the beach.

  • "We felt the details for this property were very misleading."

It was far from ‘immaculate’ as described, I would in fact summarise it as tired and grubby. Early on in our stay I went to the Yorkshire Coastal Cottages office to pick up a parking ticket and was a little embarrassed to mention that the property was rather grubby. The staff said they were surprised and disappointed to learn this and offered me a mid week clean. As I didn’t want to cause a fuss and as I initially believed their apology was genuine , I declined. My main intention was to make sure that the following weeks guests didn’t have to endure some of the things that we were. It was only when a member of our group subsequently checked on the reviews of the property in more detail that I realised that the letting agents could not possibly have been genuinely surprised as a string of reviews has told them how grubby the property is. The reassurance that they gave me about it being the last week of the cleaner and a new cleaner being installed for the following week was remarkably similar to the promise they have used for many of the reviews in the past 12 months. How very disappointing! To knowingly let out a property where the cleaning is substandard is clearly not acceptable. To do this week after week after many complaints is wilfully negligent and shows a complete lack of respect for the customer. I was told a member of staff was in the house showing a new cleaner around prior to our arrival. If this was true, why wasn’t the quality of cleaning actually checked? If they couldn’t guarantee a clean home, why keep the price of the rental at the original price? What we paid for did not match the description-the company are clearly mis-selling this property. For clarity of the future potential customers I will provide a summary of the positives and negatives of the property as we found it. Before I begin,I will again state that the letting agents have formally been made aware of ALL of the issues in many previous reviews. Exterior entrance vestibule. This was extremely grubby both on the walls windows and floor. One might anticipate some seagull fathers floating in to this space but the level of cobwebs and grime were well beyond that. As mentioned in other reviews this area was smelly and was full of flies. Perhaps the bins should be washed out periodically. We found ourselves holding our noses as we walked through this space. Interior vestibule. This was a pleasant space, great for storing buggies or bikes. The York stone flooring was very attractive. The plinth where the modem was stored was very dusty and was our first sign of things to come. Laundry cupboard -a very dirty, cob web filled space which contained a washing machine and tumble dryer. Buckets and spades and a few games were in this space too but were hard to access initially as all of the cleaning products appeared to have been thrown onto the floor of this space leaving us unable to step inside until we did a bit of rearranging. This was a minor irritation but nothing that caused this too much concern. Upstairs bathroom. At some point in its history, this room has been rather nicely decorated. Unfortunately by our arrival it appeared to be very tired and unloved. There are clearly ventilation issues as the shower grouting had patches of black mildew and the metal sink which supported the glass bowl was covered in rust. There was plenty of dust, spiderwebs and 8 legged friends to be found in this room. Main lounge area – I think the best way to describe this room would be that it was functional. It was a no frills room as we had anticipated but It is true that there is a very good view of the harbour and of the abbey. The windows were rather grubby but that didn’t concern us too much. Kitchen - this was actually quite well equipped. The crockery, cutlery, pans and glassware was all fine. Markings on the oven had clearly worn off , the barely visible masking tape instructions on its face were difficult to decipher but al least someone had tried! The tiled backsplash and cooker hood were greasy. A little unappealing! Bedroom 1 - this was a large space and looked promising. Unfortunately we soon became aware of yet more cleaning issues. Imagine our surprise when we opened the drawers by the side of the bed to find old tracksuit bottoms, dirty socks and a used tissue! On closer inspection the floors were very dirty at the edges. I could almost believe this room had not been hoovered or swept. On the plus side, the bedding and towels were very white and looked fresh. As we settled down to bed in the evening we were rather unimpressed by the many cobwebs that fluttered all around the edges of the ceiling in every part of the room. When I reached down to plug in my phone I had to push aside many cobwebs. As I got out of bed the next day, my stomach rather turned as I put my hand on the bed head to discover it was absolutely thick with dust. In times of Covid this was not reassuring! We found the bed rather small and soft but do understand that this is a matter of personal preference. Bedroom 2 -We needed to use this space as a double room so when we moved the beds across we were rather appalled to see the grime and detritus that lay on the floor underneath. This room was clearly in need of a deeper clean too because as we hoovered this detritus up, it appeared to be rather stuck to the floor. On a practical note, access to plugs in this room would have been a little tricky had we not moved the beds. This was a very small room but was functional if you ignored the dust and cobwebs. Bathroom-The main sink in this room was dirty on arrival. The mirror light still does not work despite assurances in a previous review from the company that they had fixed it. On a plus note the shower was nice and powerful. ‘Terrace’ -We had imagined when we booked this property that would be able to return from town and sit on the terrace with our family enjoying a nice evening drink. The tempting description of this outside space and the photo was our main reason for booking this property. What we found in reality was that this space was very limited. It is paved but the whole area is probably less than a metre and a half wide. I’m not sure if cleaning of the furniture was part of the weekly brief but when we arrived the chairs were covered in bird poo. Again you might expect some accidents from seagulls during the week but not as you first walk in. ( Fortunately some rain on the final day may have helped clean the furniture this week) Whereas we had imagined being able to sit around a little table, we couldn’t in fact arrange the chairs in anything other than a single curved line if we wanted to sit out there. Some large weeds bought a welcome bit of greenery to this joyless area but did not really add much to the ambience. It all felt very unloved, rather like the rest of the property. We chose not to sit in this area once over the week despite some nice weather. Sadly, this property felt unloved, grubby and tired, and was far from ‘immaculate’ as was promised in the description. There is a clear discrepancy here and I welcome further interaction with the letting company as I believe, given their failure to address the basic issues many customers have repeatedly mentioned, we were mis-sold this accommodation. I have photos of some of the areas of concern should they be needed. It is so sad to have to write this but someone needs to take ownership of the issues here. I had hoped that a quiet, private word would have been enough and I probably would not have written had I not realised that I had been lied to. Fobbing off the customers with empty apologies and promises is not acceptable and so disappointing.

Thank you for your feedback we welcome feedback good or bad. We are disappointed that our normal level of cleaning was not maintained, we have had a few problems but appreciate that our normal high standards were not met in this instance and we have just changed our cleaners with a view to remedy this. We are sorry upon raising your concerns you did not allow us to undertake a mid week clean which would have remedied the cleanliness related issues. We will endevour to sort out the laundry cupboard to make it more accessable, unfortunetely with all the covid rules things have to be done a lot different and such items can't be left out. It needed a good sweep and clean in front of entrance. Everywhere was reasonably clean, but quite a few cobwebs. Not enough mugs. Had to keep washing them. Perhaps the cleaners don’t get enough time to clean properly.

We are sorry to hear that the front entrance was not clean on your arrival, and whilst we have cleaned this subsequently we are aware as the street is a terrace with only a few entrances leaves and debris collect regularly, and can only apologise that our normal cleaning regime did not prevent this. We were not aware that there had been so many breakages this season at the cottage and have replaced mugs, glasses and wine glasses to a good standard. The upstairs of the cottage was decorated last year and we appreciate that there has been a higher than normal level of wear and tear this summer, mainly as a result of Covid restrictions. Similarly we make regular checks on pillows, duvets and mattresses. Thank you for your comments we did replace some of the more worn pillows and one duvet but do try to make sure these are generally of good cleanliness and quality. It mentioned they would usually leave a hamper but due to Covid can’t, that is poor really as if that’s true you could argue they shouldn't leave anything whatsoever, but even if we give benefit of the doubt why don’t the owners leave the gift of a £5/10 for guests to spend? Only one toilet roll left which is a pain and rather tight, and only 4 large mugs with one chipped on the lip, no oil for cooking is also a pain. Also only 3 dishwasher tablets. Liked Whitby but parking became such a pain, at best it took 10 mins to find a W spot and worst I circled for nearly 50 mins which was no fun. I think for the money the house wasn’t quite good enough tbh.

Thank you for your feedback although we are sorry and disappointed to note that you found some areas of housekeeping lacking. We will make an approach to the housekeeper in this regard but we do wish this had been reported at the time when we could have arranged for her to return to address the issues raised. Also, whilst this season has not been as long as normal it would appear there have been some breakages which were not reported. We will replace any chipped or broken items. As advised, the provision of welcome hampers was suspended as we felt guests would not wish to receive edible items packed by unknown persons in the current climate. If this had caused any particular disappointment one could have been provided on request. The hampers are complimentary and do not form part of the cost of your holiday. We would normally ensure there are two toilet rolls per toilet but must remember this is self catering and not hotel accommodation. Parking is always a challenge in Whitby in August and unfortunately we are unable to do anything about this if you require your car to be parked close by. We do hope we can welcome you back again at a less busy time. Property Owner

We had previously booked our twice yearly holidays in Whitby via another cottage company but the last couple of years had brought too many disappointments. So we decided to try your company as you appeared to offer a much higher standard of accommodation along with excellent service, We certainly weren't disappointed and this is the first time we loved a place so much we re-booked. Fisherman's Warehouse is airy, spacious and comfortable with a superb view. It's in a quiet central location where we can nip out in any direction. Well equipped, clean and tidy, it served us well. Airy, spacious and comfortable, the cottage has a private terrace with superb views of the harbour, Whitby Abbey and out to sea.

It is a gem of a place for families who like everything on their doorstep, yet tucked away in a quiet location. Step inside the entrance porch to find an elegant reception hall, flagged in Yorkshire stone.

This area is illuminated at night with low level blue lights.

A few steps up from the reception hall leads to a light and airy open plan living space, with comfortable sitting and dining areas.

Who can be first to “see the sea”?

There is a wonderful view from this floor.

The well-equipped kitchen is sparkling clean, with ample work surfaces and a dishwasher.

A great addition to this property is the ground floor shower room, perfect for a nice hot shower after sandy days at the beach.

Families will appreciate the utility room with a washing machine and dryer. Both bedrooms – one double, the other twin – are located on the lower ground floor, with patio doors to the private enclosed terrace outside.

How lovely to be able to feel the sunshine on your face, hear the gulls and breathe in fresh sea air when you step out of bed. The house bathroom, beautifully tiled with a modern bath, shower over, basin and WC. To end the day, why not indulge in a romantic nightcap on the terrace – from here you can see Whitby’s iconic Abbey, floodlit in the evening. For those who like a challenge, Whitby’s famous 199 steps are a must – the views from St Mary’s church and the Abbey are well worth the climb.

Little ones are sure to love the golden sandy beach; or let them try their hand at crabbing in the harbour using a simple weighted line, it’s an experience to treasure, just don’t forget to put back what you catch!

Fans of seafood and fresh fish and chips are spoilt for choice in Whitby’s many award-winning restaurants. Walkers and cyclists should seek out the Cinder Track route from Whitby station to Robin Hood’s Bay and onto Scarborough, it follows the old railway line.

For a magical 2-mile woodland walk on the North York Moors, try May Beck and Falling Foss, there’s a lovely café half way around the circular walk. Fisherman’s Cottage has been finished to a high standard and guests will be pleased to return here after days spent exploring this wonderful part of England.
