  • "Really enjoyable stay at Cairns Cottage."

Location absolutely perfect for us, 10 minute walk to the Abbey, steady incline rather than the 199 steps. Great views over the harbour. 5 minute walk to the main bridge in Whitby and a bit further for the beach. Pub at the bottom of the steps (please not for elderly or disabled the steps are very tricky with luggage and without so wouldn’t recommend). Property itself does need some maintenance, as per previous feedback, the towel holder in the top bathroom needs fixing as well as the toilet seat. The duvets aren’t the best and would recommend replacing them as they rolled up inside the duvet cover. Oven could maybe do with a deep clean but not too bad. Seating in the living room is ok but not that comfortable. Overall we would stay again and with the minor adjustments/improvements it would make it even better. Thanks.

Thanks Ian for this feedback. We have actually just replaced the duvets for lighter summer ones so disappointing these are not up to scratch - will sort this week. We are also aware we need to replace the sofa in the living area - and it’s being actioned! We have booked an oven cleaner - thank you for bringing to our attention! Property Owner

  • "What an amazing little piece of whitby."

Located atop of some really old fashioned steps. (They aren't for the unfit). This 4 floor cottage is like something from a story book. It was clean and had everything needed for a weeks stay. Really loved it didn't want to leave. Only one thing the mattress is a lumpy back breaker. But the charm of the cottage over shadows this one flaw.

Thanks for the feedback Martin - we now have new mattresses at the cottage ! Hope to welcome you again soon! Property Owner

  • "Comfortable stay but the amount of steps in and accessing became intolerable at the end of my stay."

Two main points of complaint was broken toilet seat that we reported on arrival, but we’re not attended to and the oven did not work. To a lesser extent every bit of hardware around the house, from blinds to towel rails were hanging from the walls as whoever responsible for diy had used wrong type of fixings. Overall the cleanliness and comfort was ok and we enjoyed Whitby immensely

Thank you for the feedback. The oven is working - the instructions are in the kitchen for operating it but it was checked after you left and we have had no problems. Note there is a contact number for any issues during your stay. We note your feedback re the loose fittings and are sorting this out! Property Owner

  • "The cottage is in a good location but in need of some TLC."

The furnishings are tired and the mattresses are very saggy The fire extinguisher in the kitchen is out of date and it looks as though the fire blanket has been removed and re stuffed into its container. The tabs are not in the right place for it to be used properly. No appliances have been PAT tested. The microwave is in a poor condition. It is rusty inside at the back and side. The interior paint is peeling off. The stair carpet from the back door up to the sitting room is dirty, worn and wrinkled on some steps. The carpet on the landing is very worn. The main bedroom has plastic tubs sticking out from underneath it which catch your feet as well as looking bad. The mattress is very sagging and lumpy The bed frame creaks and squeaks- the bolts need tightening. I stayed in this bed by myself. I would not liked to have shared it with anyone. The duvet was very heavy and dense. There was a stain on it when I took the cover off at the end of the stay as requested. The mattresses on the single beds are also due for replacement. We came to Whitby to attend a funeral. We needed to hang up our clothes. The only wardrobe was full of bedding and other stuff. - this and all the stuff under the bed could have be stored in the downstairs cupboard and locked away. The chairs in the sitting room are also past their used by date. The seat cushion foam is very thin and you can feel the hard frame when sitting. The pleather is wrinkled because the cushions are worn out. Outside the small yard at the back was dirty with some rubbish and an old cloth on the floor. Long Steps to the cottage were very dirty with litter, dog poo and water leaking from a pipe. I realise these don’t belong to you but you should contact the council/ neighbours about their condition. Over the years we have rented various properties around Whitby and sadly this one was a disappointment.

Thank you for your feedback which is very helpful. We have since replaced all the mattresses and duvets at the cottage and we were not aware there was a problem with the fire blanket (had been used) but have redone the health and safety inspection and everything is now in order. The back yard is cleaned during every changeover - but, as you say, there appeared i be some issues with litter in the public area next to the yard during your stay which is regrettable. . Coat hangers i think are the worse iv every seen, the throw away ones. also no hanging space just one small walldrobe in the whole place... You have to like stairs if you stay here....

Thank you for your feedback. I can come form as a result of this we have replaced the microwave as we weren’t aware there was a problem with it. We have also put extra coat hangers in. There is a full wardrobe in the king bedroom and then hanging hooks in the twin room upstairs :-) Property Owner

  • "It was a lovely stay at the cottage and we especially enjoyed the views and close proximity to the town."

I stayed in the twin room and there were some minor maintenance things, such as the wall side shelf was loose so couldn't leave a cup on it securely and the bath/shower became stuck, so couldn't use the shower attachment. This was on the last morning, so not enough of an issue. Some of the mugs needed a good clean too. These minor adjustments and a more comfortable sofa, would have given my rating a five star.

This is very helpful feedback and we have now sorted the twin room - thank you for bringing to our attention! Property Owner

Neat tidy and beautifully maintained. Thankfully only 3 of us went because the cottage wasn’t really suitable size wise for the 5 we originally talked about going. Was really impressed with the little yard as the dog could wander inside and out when we used the kitchen eating and playing games. Would use again Thank you

  • "The Cottage was lovely, however it is situated between two roads on a steep hill so access from your car to the cottage is not easy resulting in multiple trips to unload/load your car on arrival/departure."

There are number steps or a steep slope to overcome from either Church Street below the cottage or from the Ropery above the cottage, so anyone particularly unsteady on their feet may find it difficult. In addition, in the en-suite there seems to be a random issue with the plumbing in that the shower turns on when you either flush the toilet and/or then turn the sink tap on along with a high-pitched squealing sound. We also felt that the lounge suite was uncomfortable for us. That said, overall the cottage was ideal for us, close to the town centre and had great views of the harbour from the rooms. A well equipped kitchen which satisfied all our mealtime requirements and the cottage had excellent free Wi-Fi. We would recommend the accommodation and had a lovely holiday in Whitby.

I’m Not sure if you are aware but the downpipe coming into the yard spills water on the path, there was quite a lot of water on the back yard one morning.

Everything is provided for a great holiday and I would recommend Cairns cottage, with the proviso that it is only suitable for the fit traveller. There is a long and steep set of steps to get to the cottage and the cottage itself is on 4 levels, thus entailing more stairs. It does keep you fit though and is very appropriate for Whitby. We would certainly go again.

We received an information pack by email from Mrs Cairns prior to arrival and that told us everything we needed to know. The views from the upper floor windows were absolutely amazing, it was lovely watching the boats coming and going from the harbour and the steam trains arriving and departing from Whitby station.

The fish restaurants are plentiful and spoilt for choice. The coastal walk to Robin Hoods Bay was challenging but enjoyable. The accommodation was great but not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. The only thing lacking was somewhere to sit outside with a drunj.

Everything we wanted is within walking distance of cottage. Friendly & cosy pubs & cafes, Sherlocks cafe a must for lovers of cream teas. Just a couple of negatives, built-in DVD player didn't work and the previously reported 2 spot lights in the top floor bathroom hadn't been fixed, sorry to moan but without these 2 little gripes, Cairns Cottage would have been given a 10 but alas 8 out of 10 is still good. Will definitely recommend Cairns Cottage & we hope to revisit again soon.

We loved how close we were to the centre of Whitby and also the abbey being so close (and not having to go up the 199 steps! ;-) ). We also loved that on a lazy sunny morning we could sit in our king size bed and watch the steam train from the other side of the harbour. Having two teenagers meant that we could nip out in the evening to a local pub (less than 5 mins walks!) and leave the lads back at the cottage safely. Lovely holiday, lovely cottage, lovely location, would definately recommend!
