Great location. Take a torch, as it's a bit hard to find for the 1st time (arrived17.00) late November!! However, if you use What3Words this is for the front door ///starred.surprises.bleach The parking place for the cottage is right opposite the pagoda, again What3Words is ///motel.undertone.fire The swimming pool is £10 for the week and £10 deposit for the key. We had this to our selves every time we used it. Well done to the owners. We will be back. Best regards Steve & Jan

Dear Steve & Jan, We're thrilled to receive your fantastic review of our holiday let! Thank you for choosing our place and taking the time to share your experience. Thank you for your wonderful description of our cottage as an "absolute little gem" in a great location . We appreciate your helpful tip about bringing a torch, especially for those arriving during the darker months, We have also now fitted a movement sensor light to the front door archway which will illuminate the entrance area to help on arrival. Your use of What3Words for navigation is incredibly thoughtful and will undoubtedly assist future guests. It's wonderful to hear that you had the swimming pool to yourselves and found the arrangement with the key and deposit hassle-free. When we opened the door it had a lovely smell and feel to it as beautifully and tastefully decorated and furnished. The position is great as down by the river where I saw a seal one day. Fabulous view of the viaduct and steam trains passing by. Nice walk into Whitby. We didn't use the car once. Walked to Robin Hoods Bay along the cinder track then bus back. Walked to Sandsend too. I'd definitely recommend this cottage.

  • "We were very disappointed with this property as it was in need of a deep clean!"

It was very grubby and had a fishy/fusty aroma! I'm not sure where to begin but to name a few, the toilet had urine and hairs on it, there was damp on the walls and ceilings and the kettle was so dirty we did not even want to make a cup of tea with it. The bed was so uncomfortable, we both had bad backs the next day - we may as well have slept on the floor! Cleanliness is not a luxury, it is a basic requirement and clean it was not! The booking for 3 nights was not cheap but it was so bad we left after the first night and made a booking elsewhere which was not what I expected to have to do on my birthday weekend away! We were disgusted that the owner refused a partial/full refund, had we known the state of the property, we would have never have booked it. I have never had to complain nor leave a bad review for a holiday before and I only wish I could upload the photos I took as evidence to show you how bad it was compared to the photos used for advertising!

Dear Sarah, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and concerns with us. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us identify areas where we can improve and ensure a better experience for all our customers. We are genuinely sorry to hear that your experience with your stay, did not meet your expectations, particularly regarding the bed's comfort. We take customer satisfaction seriously, however at no point during your stay did you get in touch with Sykes cottages regarding any of the above concerns. Had you contacted Sykes, Than we could have sent out a member of staff to address and rectify any concerns. In regards to the photos, a close up of some breadcrumbs inside a toaster which we couldn't identify if it was ours doesn't warrant a refund. Regarding the discomfort you mentioned with the bed, we would like to assure you that our mattresses are commercial-grade mattresses with high quality memory foam which were brand new in January, chosen for its supportive and comfortable qualities. We understand that comfort preferences vary among individuals, and we regret that our mattress did not meet your specific expectations. The Property photos show the property exactly as it is, as stated in other reviews by our guests. Once again, we appreciate your feedback and your willingness to share your experience. However, we feel it was a unfair and misleading review and to only reach out once you had returned home after your stay via email asking for a refund giving us no opportunity to rectify any concerns raised. play parks for children and a swimming pool to use, which needs a 10 pound returnable deposit for the key to get in. Walk over the viaduct into Whitby takes around 20 minutes, and is nice and peaceful. The property is well looked after, and has everything needed for all your needs, no shop on site, but aldi, sainsburys, b and m, and a large Iceland are all situated together about a mile away. Dog friendly property, and lots of places in Whitby are dog friendly, lots of pubs and shops are too. We look forward to visiting again.

The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in! The onsite pool and space to play right at the back door we're very welcome for our 7 year old. The upstairs got quite hot due to us not being able to access the heater in the hallway to switch it off. I made an enquiry with Sykes over this but it didn't get resolved during our stay. Other than that the only minor niggle we had was 2 evenings at about 11pm there was a small group of drunk teenage girls that appeared and were messing about on the playground and being quite loud. I'm not sure that they were resident on the park as we didn't see them during the day.

When we arrived all the heaters had been turned off at the wall, the cottage was very very cold and we had a 1 year old we were very worried about putting to bed in a room that was only 14 degrees! A number of dog treats were found near the sofas and under the radiator covers with both my 1 year old and dog attempted to eat. There was also a tablet of some kind on the floor which could have been very dangerous. The fridge was quite dirty with bits all on the shelf’s and the milk holder was broken. Despite this the cottage was homely, facilitating and in a beautiful spot and would still definitely like to visit again.

So cosy and tastefully decorated with everything we needed for our week here. You can really see that a lot of love, care and attention has gone into this home . There was even a bottle of wine and biscuits waiting for us . We came as a couple , but would be great for a family with small children as there was a little play-area very close by . Spotlessly clean , cosy bed , compact bathroom ( you might struggle in the shower if you’re tall ) , kitchen had everything we needed… even a slow cooker . It’s position was perfect … peaceful …. near to the River , and the railway ( where the steam train regularly chugged by ) . A short walk ( 20 mins) along the Cinder Track took us into Whitby. I was unable to get a signal for my mobile phone at the cottage (I’m on ee) , but my husband did ( he’s on 02) so I just used his hotspot . It was quite nice to just switch off for a few days

  • "I so wanted to write a fantastic review as upon arrival we were delighted with the cottage."

The area is outstanding, the cottage is in a lovely position and initially we really found the cottage comfortable, bright and welcoming. There were 4 adults and one baby and there was space and comfort for all . However as the first day unfolded we found we had to wash the kitchen equipment, the light switches were sticky with dirt , the bathroom sink was cracked , you could not shower properly as the ceiling sloped down , there were not enough glasses for water or cider etc , the grill tray for the grill pan did not fit , really annoying. We had paid £900 for our 3 nights , I understand we payed more than usual as it was a special event weekend in Whitby, however I would have thought this afforded us the luxury of more than one toilet roll for 4 people !! The surprising thing was the owners very generously left us a superb bottle of gin , tonic waters and chocolates, but I wish they’d have spent the money on toiletries and glasses . I’m sorry to write this as we had a fabulous time and if these issues were addressed we would go back again .

Thankyou for your feedback. We can only apologise that you had to rewash your kitchen equipment but unfortunatly we do rely on guests that wash dishes and put them away to have washed them properly. We have since added a guest book page that kindly asked guests to take care washing up and to be considerate of the next guests. We can only apologise that there wasnt enough glasses, we put in 8 new glasses in february so can only presume they have been broken. We have now replaced these with 2 new sets. We were unaware the grill tray did not fit properly, we have now replaced it with a brand new grill pan and tray. With regards to the bathroom we have since been in touch with a plumber who has come up with a solution to provide extra head space in the shower, the new bathroom will be fitted in june this year. • "We had a great time at Fauna’s Corner, it is situated in Captains Cooks Haven, which is quiet and peaceful and within easy walking distance to the centre of Whitby."

Our first impressions were of a well presented cottage, the kitchen is small but has all the appliances that you need, the fridge is old and rusty at the bottom of the door and needed defrosting. There were most things that we needed to cook a meal but we had to go buy a coffee maker as there wasn’t one provided also there wasn’t a colander for draining vegetables, pasta etc. The lounge and bedrooms were comfortable and well presented although surfaces were dusty. The bathroom was the room that let the whole place down, the hand basin is cracked and is set really low down. The shower is over the bath, but is very low as the roof slopes over the bath, I could only just stand up in the bath with my head touching the ceiling, at its highest setting the water from the shower head reached the middle of my shoulder blades, in order to get washed successfully the shower head has to be removed from the holder and hand held, washing my hair was a nightmare. I am 5’ 7” but my husband is 6’ 2” so he had more problems when showering, in fact he called it his daily limbo dance! We could have had a bath but that is very small too. The owners have tried very hard to make the cottage stylish and comfortable but for me I think fewer pictures and trimmings with the money spent on updating the bathroom would improve things greatly.

Thankyou for your feedback, we are new, and take feedback very seriously. We were unaware that the freezer had caused the fridge to rust so we have now replaced it with a brand new one. You also mention there was no strainer for the vegatables, we can only imagine this was damaged or taken by previous guests as there was a brand new one put in, in february along with the brand new kitchen. This has now been replaced. You also mentioned you were disapointed there was no coffee machine, we haven't stated in the amenities that we have a one. We do however provide tea coffee and sugar. After your suggestion we have now put in a brand new coffee machine. Your main complaint on your review was about the bathroom, unfortunatly as with all the Endeavour cottages, due to the size of the bathroom and the sloping roof we are unable to put in a shower to give full head height. It is stated in the discription that there is a hight restriction which is also clearly visable from the photo. Again we are trying to improve this as we have recently had it looked at by a local plumber and we are having a new bathroom suit fitted to provide more space for future guests. This will be complete in june this year. This is our first year with the property and we have fully renovated it with no expense spared, we are only allocated 5 weeks throughout january into february to complete works as this is the time for all renovations on site to be complete as to not disturb paying guests. The bathroom is the last room to be done. We want to make the cottage feel like a home rather than a holiday let hence the reason we have put alot of personal home accessories in. Property Owner
