“This was the first holiday that my wife and I had with our two Labradoodles, the house was well appointed and comfortable.”

It was, however impossible to park close by as the street that the house is situated is very narrow and has double yellow lines mainly. The parking permits that were given to us were very welcome and we found parking just about five minutes walk away. We are looking to visit Whitby again next year and we would consider this property to stay in.

“Just 1 complaint, Our group consisted of 5 50-60 year old male workmates, so i booked this cottage because it stated 5 beds, when we arrived there was just the 4 beds, both of the attic bedrooms with one bed in each as opposed to the twin that was advertised, fortunately one of the group was ill, so he didn't come for the weekend so it all worked out fine.”

“Perfect location lovely town”

Owner man was very helpful and friendly. Lovely house with two quaint bedrooms on the top floor. Location was great. Not far to walk to shops, harbour and beach. Lots of lovely restaurants and coffee shops too. Whitby is beautiful. Only down side was not many parking spaces but we eventually found some. It wouldn't hinder me returning to this house. Stayed 5 night and only used car one day to go out of Whitby

Had an amazing stay here, very comfortable and in a great location close to all you need. I’ve been to Whitby several times and stayed in different places but this was ideal for my family and the dog. Very helpful owner and I would stay here again. Good value for money too. We didn’t want to leave

“Lovely place”

House was great. Very clean and comfortable. Nicely decorated with wonderful quirky features like the alcove on the stair and the many small cupboards in the two top bedrooms. Travel cot was provided and easy to set up. High chair was also provided but it didn't look very clean so we didnt use that, however it was great that there was baby friendly cutlery and plates available. Stayed 11 nights so having a hoover and mop available was great to ensure the floor was clean for my one year old. Would have been good to have two working stair gates, but worked fine having one on the stairs going down to the door. Great being so close to town and having bothams at the end of the street for bread etc in the mornings was ideal. This is the first time we have stayed this side of town so it was like a different type of holiday, spending much more time on the Victorian side of town. Walked the dog to West Cliff every morning and evening, perfect distance for an old dog. Overall we loved staying here and would stay here again thank you for having such a lovely place.

“House was great.”

On first appearances all looked good , needs fresh furniture in lounge such as three piece suite very dated worn had to put fleeces on it to feel comfortable, main bedroom needs a new bed very creaky, kitchen no waste bin lid in 2013 it was mentioned in the visitors book and still no lid on it food waste smells also we had no outside waste bin so bags were outside been attacked by seagulls apart from that the accommodation was nice in good location can see they would be problems with parking in peak season

There were two bathrooms and only 1 toilet roll in each of these. The location was very good but we could have done with more information about the parking as we paid for one car and used the scratch card for the other when there was two cards available so this cost us another £20. Overall considering the accommodation was £300/night ,and we stayed two nights ,the cost for the standard of the facilities was a bit steep

Sykes were nothing but helpful and criendly all the way through. Whitby itself wa s a joy. And Fireman's rest waz so much more than we could have hoped for - plenty of space. But still cosy, warm, well fitted, close to all anenities, clean it was perfect. Thank you. We shall be back to Sykes.

“Awful”

Without doubt the worst cottage I've ever been in. Dirty and old don't be tempted to go. I hope the rest of Sykes cottages are better than this one. Someone should check it out and remove it from let's.

“Home was good, a little concerned that the stairs may have been too steep but not at all.”

Only downside in the home were the low beams on the top floor, once you bang your head you remember to duck next time. Very handy to have a good washing machine and ironing facilities on hand, first time we have gone home with clean clothes in the cases. Our little westie loved it, very close to West Cliff through a short cut up alley at the side of next door. Very close to pub, excellent home bakery and a top class fish and chip shop which is slightly off the tourist trod. One point to remember is bin day is very early Thursday mornings and bin needs to be taken to top of alley at back of house. Unfortunately the people before us left us with an overflowing bin which caused a few problems , neighbour helped us out by letting us put bags in their bins.

“A great week in Whitby.”

Fireman’s Rest is a lovely house spread over 3 floors. The host was most helpful with a couple of queries we had. The downside was no wi-fi which wasn’t much of an issue for myself and husband but our daughter and boyfriend would have appreciated it. Parking was tight (not easy in Whitby anyway) and we got a ticket because forgot to pur registration number on permit. We had a good time - thank you.

the shower did not work on the first floor (kept going hot and cold which was dangerous for my 9 year old granddaughter) so only had the full use of one bathroom. Found it a bit awkward to let the dogs out (fire escape a bit scary) and the parking was a little confusing (parking permit from owner was really helpful, but we needed another) Great places to eat and visit in and around Whitby, overall a good holiday.

“Short Break”

We stayed here as a family in January and have to say that it was perfect for us; warm, cosy, comfortable, well-equipped and centrally located near to Skinner Street but also the sea. We know Whitby very well and have stayed in many properties and so have seen good and bad over the years. Our group ranged in age from grandparent to baby and yet the cottage had all that we needed. The owner was extremely helpful and on hand if we needed him. We would most definitely stay there again.

“Nice”

I suppose nice sums it up really. It was nice. The location was good, central ish, not too far to walk to anywhere. I stayed with my parents, they booked it as it was great they could take the dog. The house was tidy, well kept, reasonable facilities. Downsides were, it wasn't advertised (where they booked it) that there were steps to it. My dad is disabled, so struggled some days if we had been walking a lot. There is a lack of mod cons... Most importantly Internet! Not a big deal for some on holiday, but for me with my folks, I would have liked it!!! We also couldn't find a guest handbook? Usually in private rentals you find some kind of welcome book. Also, the upstairs bedrooms are difficult to get to, the stairs are very narrow and there is limited headroom. I don't mean the review to sound negative, I didn't pay for the rental I'm sure for the price there was adequate. Could just do with some attention.

Fantastic cottage loads of stairs but kept us fit lol it was clean and very local to everything great to be able to park outside with the permit from the owners great bonus loved the stay here and seriously have nothing bad to say about it would recommend it to anyone pictures of the top floor rooms loved there quantness but we never used them as there was just two of us staying

“Good location shame about 2nd bedroom”

Good location and most of the house was very good but 2nd bedroom was dreadful - small bed against the wall which is too difficult for older people to get in and out of, one small broken chair, small wardrobe with no hangers, couldn't stand up in half the room because of angled ceiling. No parking space available and promised vouchers not left until next day when we had already paid for 2 days parking.

“home from home”

i wanted to personally thank the landlord for the use of his holiday home, He was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The house is well furnished and to a high standard, the three flights of stairs keep you fit, it is in a perfect location. the only down side was the noisey seagulls!!! the parking voucher was a bonus and thankyou, we have had a lovely holiday and would deffo book it again

It was very clean and well equipped, kitchen was spotless. Beds and sofa were comfy, lovely gas fire in the front room, very snug on those chilly evenings. Bathrooms were great with excellent power shower over the bath downstairs. Quirky touches to the house, low beams upstairs, interesting alcove area over the stairs! Dog friendly house also. Great location for nearby facilities, lots of quirky shops in the Whitby town centre. We certainly had a very restful time at the Fireman's Rest. Will definitely return.

“Central, quiet, perfect”

We were a group of 5 and this cottage was perfect for us. We know Whitby very well and this place is centrally located but off the main street meaning it is situated in a quiet spot and we weren't disturbed by other Goth revellers during the wee hours. The kitchen is well equipped and with 2 bathrooms this place is very comfortable and was spotless for our visit. There are lots of quirky features in the house, low beams on the top floor and a elf size recess halfway up the staircase - which amused us no end. Also check out the small doorway in the kitchen that leads to...? Very nice would definitely stay again.
