Accommodation absolutely fantastic, all rooms large and spacious, showers in the bathrooms very good. Upon arrival we found the nice touch of a Christmas tree in the living room and couldn’t miss the steam engine that was sitting on the railway tracks just feet from the window. The garage provided secure parking for our cars and Whitby town centre is literally a few minutes walk away. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this property.

It was clean, modern and in a great position to explore Whitby and the area. A suggestion- we had in our party a wheelchair user and the outside parking space numbered 11, ( the number for our apartment) was suitable to get in and out of the apartment. When other people parked in that space and we had to park in the garage, it was very difficult getting a wheelchair through the internal double doors to the garage. Could a notice be put on the outside parking space for blue badge users? Thank you for a great stay.

  • "This is the second time staying in the Flying Scotsman, and personally think cleaning standards have dropped."

Extractor fans in bathrooms are filthy, unsealed dishwasher tablets, half bottle of washing up liquid, 1/3 toilet roll left underneath sink, 3 half empty bags of ice and couple of lollies left in freezer, which could do with a defrost due to amount of ice build up. Dust and peanuts under sofa, only noticed when we put fan on and they blew out. And not to mention cleaners, your door is basically blocked early morning waiting for you get out, they are waiting in the corridor for you leave. Don't know what's happened with the property, new owner/agent but has standards have definitely gone down

Only two things I'd mention. Firstly, we found the wifi not particularly good, sometimes a very slow speed meaning unable to download/view catch up TV due to constant buffering, yet other times it was fast (I wonder if it is shared between other lets in the same building). The other issue was being unable to get more information ahead of booking, as there is no contact information for the owner and Sykes can only repeat the info on the listing. We wanted two adjoining units, but couldn't find out which were next door, Sykes didn't even know when we contacted them!

It is extremely spacious and well equipped with high quality furnishings and equipment. It is conveniently located with a car parking space that is really valuable in Whitby. The cleaning staff were efficient and friendly and went out of their way to help us when we arrived early.. Our only gripe is that the price of the apartment has increased by nearly 50% over 2 years for the week we visit. Whilst the apartment is certainly premium , the price is now much too high now for the first week of December when considered against comparable properties. Unfortunately this is likely to stop us from booking again.

  • "Most impressed with property."

Sadly arrived to find garage door wide open due to broken controller so no car security, also used pizza food boxes left on the floor of the garage suspect being used by non-residents. On entering the apartment very impressed clean fresh and aired. On going into the middle room (double + single bed) a very strong odour smell in the room like engine oil or maybe an odour seeping out of the roof trusses, this odour was only in this room and was there for the whole week we were there. We did ring the contact number and reported it they said they had never heard of it before. There were 5 bar stools around the breakfast bar (not the same stools shown in there photos) when I sat on one it very unstable and very noisy (squeaking) so used another and the same. All of the bar stools had the same problem. I looked at the support post on one of the bar stools as it looked different to the others only to find that a plastic insert had pulled out allowing the stool to wobble, the chrome was all scrapped off and the post was all covered in grey oiled residue. All stools need replacing very poor quality. First night sleep okay but didn't expect the early morning alarm call 6:19am then again 10 minutes later. The first train of the day arriving from Middlesbrough then returning. With all the double glazed doors closed we were all woken by the noise and this happened every time a train arrived or left. Major fault with property not noise insulated enough. Every evening at 9pm another noise started the boy racers this would last at least 1 hour every night up and down the car parks across from the engine room apartments. Would love to return to the apartments but no the noise needs to be sorted.

We have found previously that it is usual to find cheap fixtures and fittings which are broken and accommodation which looks tired and isn’t a home from home at all. The engine shed was completely different. We stayed in The Flying Scotsman apartment which was finished to a very high standard and really felt like a home. It was spotlessly clean and could not be faulted in any way. The location in the middle of Whitby is ideal, and the under cover parking was a godsend with all the seagulls! • "The Flying Scotsman Engine shed was absolutely lovely, exceptionally clean and very comfortable."

The location was spot on. The steam trains outside the window was brilliant! The only downside is the fact that it is opposite a car park and at night we did experience young people in cars racing up and down and in and out of the car park with very loud exhaust pipes and generally making a noise, the sound travels a lot at night and it was very warm weather so we needed the windows open. We do realise though, that the owners of these exceptional apartments cannot be held accountable for this but we do think that they should be aware that it is happening. Other than that, we had a lovely stay at The Flying Scotsman.

Sadly, we were badly let down by Sykes, who demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the apartment and were unable to offer any meaningful assistance when we could not gain entrance to the private car park because of a broken key fob. There is no useable off site parking nearby and only one parking space outside the garage. After telling us on Friday afternoon that they would get in touch with the owners, Sykes left us to fend for ourselves, with no call back until Sunday to find out how we had fared. We eventually spoke to the owner’s manager several days after arrival, who advised us that there was an alternative entry method for the garage which would have solved our problem immediately had we been advised of it by the Sykes representative. We have always used Sykes Cottages as our first port of call when searching for holiday accommodation, and it was disappointing to find such poor support in our moment of need.
