  • "Disappointed with the choice of tv channels there appeared to be no “catch up tv” available."

Unsightly light bulbs hanging from ceiling in kitchen. Corner piece of skirting board lying loose on floor by sink in kitchen. No broom available to sweep through, only broom head no handle! Disappointed at times for arrival and departure, especially the 9am for departure which means a very early start if you expect the house to be clean and tidy. We decided to leave a day early in order that we could mop throughout in order to leave premises to our standards.

  • "The location of Haven House was excellent, a lovely 10 minute walk to the shopping area of Whitby and even closer to the nearest pub."

It was great to have off street private parking for 2 cars - unusual in Whitby. The house was lovely and warm (looked like the heating system had recently been updated) and fairly well equipped. There were a couple of small maintenance issues which we passed on to the owner by text (number in info left in property) and we received a very quick response. A great place to stay for our extended family over New Year.

  • "We had a great holiday and enjoyed staying at Haven House."

The location was good being able to walk into Whitby Town in 10 mins. We were able to go crabbing just 100 yards from the house and Sainsburys is only 1 mile away. Parking was adequate for our two cars (an estate and 4x4), just had to park them very close to each other to avoid overhanging the pavement. There were 4 adults and 4 kids so for us it would be better if the double bedroom on the top floor had twin beds instead (assuming they would squeeze in). We couldn't lock the back/conservatory door with a key but could lock it from inside. This wasn't a problem as you could go out through the front door and lock it anyway. We are pleased we booked Haven House and would visit again. Being critical here but these are the things which I think could be improved: - More/new crockery. There were a few all chipped and past their best. - Replace TV in lounge. We didn't use the TV much but a more modern Smart TV might be useful for someone else staying with kids when the weather is bad. - New dining room chairs. There were 6 chairs and another 2 older chairs in the lounge but some of the material is coking of the seat. I think all of these could do with being replaced. - More coat hangers in the wardrobes. There are some big wardrobes but only a handful of hangers. - Clothes line pegs. There was a close line but no pegs to be seen anywhere. - A kettle in the downstairs utility would be a welcome addition. - Descale the shower heads.

... Fully equiped kitchen, plenty of space.. The only negative thing is the open plan stairs on the first floor landing, going both up and down, Stairgates would've been useful.. to keep toddlers safe. Travel cot and highchair where supplied. My grandchildren loved the little park. About 10min walk into the town centre, and a lovely chippy 5 mins away.. Lovely visit..

  • "Great location, well appointed but we had to purchase some items to cook with and there was a lack of coat hangers."

Some furniture was well used and needs updating but having said that, the house was in great condition and having stayed at a number of similar properties on the estate, it compares very favourably. Having two car spaces and plenty of space is a great plus in Whitby and we would certainly consider staying there again.

  • "The location of the house was great, 10 mins walk into the town centre."

The house was warm, plenty of hot water, the house itself was a little disappointing, we booked for 8 but only 5 could eventually go, I am glad there wasn't 8 as it would have been a tight squeeze, especially the kitchen and downstairs bedroom. The property was not clean upon arrival, the large oven grill pans and shelf were badly soiled with burnt food, we did not use it as we found it to be unhealthy. The dishwasher smelt mouldy and when we washed our dishes they didn't clean properly, the filter was very dirty. The cafetier hadnt been cleaned for weeks it was badly stained and kept falling apart when used, there were 2 glasses that we found in the cupboard with cracks, the whole place was very dusty, the blinds, skirting boards, wall sockets, the bathrooms smelt very heavily of bleach which was very unpleasant and made me feel a little chesty after a couple of days as I am an asthmatic, the ceiling in the downstairs shower is peeling off exposing plaster. The toilet seat in the 1st floor bathroom was loose and needed attention. The Wifi code was different in the file and the notice in the lounge, we did put the correct one in the file when we worked it out. This property could be high quality as the owner states it is if it had some TLC and was cleaned to a high standard by the team of cleaners who have from 9am to 4.30pm to do the work. With it being a special weekend in Whitby the price of the property remained high I would definitely pay this price again if the property was in better condition.

There I not really enough room on the drive for two cars but plenty of parking on the same road so not a problem. Great location and plenty of room for a family get together. The carpets are ready to be replaced but it did not spoil our holiday.

  • "The big advantage of this property is that it is in easy walking distance of Whitby town ."

It also has beds for 8 people , 3 bathrooms and take pets . However we would in no way describe it as outstanding . For most of the week there were 4 adults 2 children and 2 cars and this was comfortable. When friends joined us for the first weekend they felt their downstairs bedroom was dank , it was a tight squeeze to sit 8 at the kitchen table and in the lounge and it was very hit and miss if there was visitor parking available ( this was described to us as guest parking but we weren't told it was a few spaces for the whole housing estate ) Perhaps our biggest concerns were cleaning ( especially when over 7 hours were allocated ) as we found a mouldy frying pan , a crisp behind a sofa cushion and socks in the washing machine . The stair carpet is threadbare in places . These things in themselves did not stop us enjoying our week but do make me feel that to describe the property as outstanding over states it .

Well equipped, good quality linen & towels & very comfortable beds. Excellent for multi generational holiday. Safe play park outside back gate, separate seating areas & good sized family kitchen. Easy 10 min walk into town & 5 mins walk onto bridge for bus to Scarborough & Robin Hoods Bay. Only tiny complaint was that we could not find any recycling bins but as we had cars & Sainsbury’s only 2 mins away was not a real problem. Will definitely rebook this house if returning to Whitby, had a wonderful stay.

  • "We know this area well, having stayed 'next door' the previous year, and we had another brilliant week in Whitby."

Haven House is convenient;y located to walk into town, and there is - just! - parking for two cars. Having read some of the feedback on cleanliness - and having an extra-vulnerable member of the family with us - we were a little concerned before arrival; however, we found nothing to worry about. We did bring our own wipes and just for peace of mind went over key 'touch' areas, but we had no concerns about the cleanliness of the house. There were five adults in our party, but we had plenty of room to spread out and do our own thing. The kitchen was well provisioned, and we appreciated the large oven and hob which enabled us to cook meals for everyone at once. We would happily return another year.

However I was abit apprehensive about the cleanliness after reading one of the comments so contacted Sykes for further update which did ease my fears. The house on the whole was very tidy and nothing to complain about really But would have expected it to be pristine given the current situation wasn’t sure any disinfectant had been used at all as you couldn’t smell anything; although wipes were left we wiped down ourselves also the outside area could do with a massive clean up and please cleaners pull the beds out!!!!

  • "The house itself is in a good location and has plenty of space and car parking."

Unfortunately the house was absolutely filthy when we arrived and wasn’t even at pre covid cleanliness standards. We spent the first few hours of our trip cleaning and then again the next morning. I have never stayed/arrived in somewhere as filthy as this. Even the high traffic areas such as handrails made cloths brown when we cleaned them which is very worrying with the current climate. I rang Sykes first thing Saturday morning to let them know (rather than waiting until the end of our stay) and their service was brilliant in taking this on and letting us get on with our holiday. I have also seen that the mention of the en-suite room taped up plug was mentioned on here October 2019, this (along with other things mentioned on here and in the guest book) still have not been fixed. I would book through Sykes again but would not recommend this cottage to anyone.

There was a couple of small things that we noticed. On arrival there was nothing in the house to greet us I thought even a pint of milk a few tea bags and even a pack of biscuits. At least we could have got a cup of tea on our arrival. No bin bags no washing up liquid to wash dishes very little toilet roll !!. We rented a Smaller house in the same area a year ago and all of the mentioned above was supplied. I also think the house could do with a freshen up as it’s showing signs of wear and tear. All in all the house is great with a few extra tweaks here and there it would make it even better.
