  • "We booked last minute due to an issue with our caravan."

To be honest my bad for not reading the reviews, which isn't like me. However, a new year and season has started and nothing in the property has changed! The property requires a good scrub, glossing and emulsioning in every room, and we only used two of them. First floor double, still with the stained curtains, to sleep in, and the second floor double as a getting ready room due yo the brightness. The yard is still in a grimy state, the tiles and cooker in the kitchen in need of a clean along with the kitchen unit doors requiring attention as they have to be 'lifted' to go back in place. A washing machine but no washing line nor airer, no wifi and no heating as the fire in the lounge is disconnected and the boiler is in a locked cupboard! Front room curtains are shabby and don't hang properly and the bulb in the main light did not work. Settee was a recliner however we had to stop reclining on one side as it was so dirty underneath with a discarded lateral flow test! It did however have an indoor waterfall in the lounge!! Well when someone was taking a shower anyway. Therefore the shower tray has still not been addressed nearly a year later!! Mould in the shower. On a plus the bed linen and towels were clean. Sykes Cottages should be ashamed they are still renting this out in light none of the issues ftom last year have been addressed. Will be advising friends to steer clear of booking through them as clearly they do not have the properties checked to ensure they are up to scratch.

  • "A beautiful house with plenty of room for up to six people."

Walking distance from the marina and shops. The only slight niggle would be parking as the street gets filled quickly so unless you’re there very early you may have to park in the next street over, it is free parking however so that’s not a problem.

  • "Kitchen was dirty, rubbish bin broken and old food underneath rubbish bag."

Patio is not a patio it's a very small yard with old cigarette ends in and green slime up the walls. Patio furniture was filthy and child sized. Did not let the dogs anywhere near the yard. Keys were not in key safe, the front door was open and keys on inside of lock. Everything else in the house was fine. Just kitchen and yard.

  • "The beds were comfy and the sofas in the lounge were pretty good."

Bed linen and towels were plain but clean and crisp. Kitchen equipped to a decent standard. I don’t even want to know what the stains are on the bedroom curtains in our double room. Coffee splashed on doors, water running down the lounge wall when anyone showers, dirt in the kitchen drawers and cupboards, cooker in need of a proper clean, food debris on the floor in the lounge, dusty in the lounge - at that price, I would at least expect it to be clean.

  • "Pros: close to town; shower is powerful; beds and sofas are comfortable; bed linen and towels were clean; WiFi was pretty good."

Cons: whole place needs redecorating- it’s very grubby and tired looking; outside yard is grim - covered in green slime and only 4 tatty garden chairs that are covered with seagull poo because they’re just left out with nowhere to store them; the kitchen and bathroom were clean in terms of sinks, toilets, worktops, etc but the tiles were grimy; parking is very tricky - a couple of evenings we got back late and there was nowhere at all in the surrounding streets to park; no outside bins and the lid of the inside bin was broken so it didn’t work with the pedal; no visitors guide or instructions folder for the house; kitchen equipment is very basic and there were odd things like not only 4 side plates; the ‘restricted headroom’ on the top landing actually means you have to bend over and fold yourself round the newel post. Overall it was fine as a base but I definitely wouldn’t say it was four star accommodation or the amount of money we paid, even for peak summer.

  • "The house was generally nice we felt comfortable and relaxed and it accommodated are needs perfectly, the only issues with the house was a leak from the ceiling in the living room after having a shower and on the top floor the window wouldn't open fully as it fouls against the ceiling, these issues didn't effect are stay but when repaired would make the house just that little bit better."

The parking isn't great we never actually managed to park on the road we were staying but always found somewhere to park after driving round for a few minutes, the house is just a few minutes walk from the harbour and if you like Indian food like us there was a lovely restaurant on the way the the harbour, we would stay at locky cottage again.

Clean and comfortable. Convenient for Whitby town centre. Parking can be a little difficult but manageable.

  • "The patio was a joke, walls painted white and covered with green slime."

No dustbin so had to keep the rubbish in the house til we were leaving. Lack of curtains and those that were provided didnt fit the windows. No visitors book or information for heating etc. we have been booking with Sykes for 30yrs and never had any complaints, i think this house will give you a bad name, No iron or ironing board that is usually provided not even a clothes maiden. The shower was leaking down the living room wall everytime we used it.

  • "This is a place that is close to the town centre but is not in the cleanest of areas."

The house is fairly clean inside with a comfortable settee but unfortunately had curtains in the living room that we daren't touch as they were hung with some hooks unattached and it was not possible to draw completely. The outside wasn't very inviting with steep dilapidated steps which needed painting at the front and a very small back yard which also desperately needed some improvement. One of the cupboard doors in the kitchen was loose. The blind on the staircase window is still there with d*ck written on it hence the fact it has been mentioned in a previous review. The main bedroom curtains on the first floor looked as if they needed a good wash, grey colour but had white dots in areas. The bed linen and towels were clean and the bed comfortable. It would have been nice to have some antibacterial hand wash both upstairs and down upon arrival. Occasionally when showering the light over the shower started flashing. Not a place I would return to.

  • "The house was lovely in many ways: exceptionally clean, lovely reclining sofas in the living room, comfy beds, nice big dining table, etc."

Great location a couple of streets from the Harbour. The steps leading to the front door are steep, but you don't go to Whitby if you can't climb steep things! You can see the Abbey ruins from the top floor double bedroom, which is lovely. But - there was a lack of lights, which will cause problems as the nights draw in. There were no bulbs in the vestibule and hallway fittings and none of the bedside lights worked. We were going to buy some bulbs at the local Co-op but they were £5 each, so we didn't! The shower was roomy and there was plenty of hot water, but it would be useful to have a shelf in the shower for soap/shampoo bottles/etc. Take your own soaps & handwash! The TV might need a retune - there weren't many channels available. The Sky box needs a card. We probably should have taken some DVDs. The yard (not patio!) is a bit grim, but we didn't use it. The parking is a bit of a nightmare - we never managed to get parked on the street (so we did block it for 10 mins to unload & load our things)! There's a road at the bottom of the hill which always seemed to have spaces.

  • "We stayed at Locky Cottage for 2 nights at the end of July."

The property has the potential to be fantastic. However, certain aspects of it weren’t very clean, and the whole of the property could do with a lick of paint. Bed linen and towels were excellent and very clean. However, window frames, skirting boards, door frames, and dining room table were all dirty. As for the shower basin, it was disgusting. The yard at the back needs painting and a plant or two putting out there and it would look good. However, as it is it looks pretty grim. There is a roller blind on the half landing window and it has the word ‘d*ck’ scratched into it. Why, I do not know. We paid a lot of money for a Friday and Saturday night, and in these times I would have expected it to be spotless and freshly painted. Disappointing.
