Or better still, why not get a take-away and let the cook have a night off! The smart kitchen is well-equipped, there’s even a coffee maker for that essential morning fix. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, large built-in wardrobes with plenty of hanging space, dressing table and TV, perfect for when you fancy a laid-back start.

It is a pleasant stroll alongside the River Esk as it curves into Whitby’s harbour.

As you follow, look out for Captain Cook’s Memorial Museum along the way – it tells the fascinating history of Whitby’s famous seafaring son, who served his apprenticeship in the vicinity.

Meander a little further through the cobbled ‘old town’ to discover interesting shops – Whitby is known for its jet and there are some fine artisan jewellers here, as well as antique shops, an old fashioned sweet shop and the famous centuries-old Whitby smokehouse – the kippers taste amazing! Whitby has two sandy beaches, one of which is dog friendly.

Other small fishing towns along the heritage coast include Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay and Sandsend with its pretty seafront cafes.

Further south, dramatic Flamborough Head, with its gleaming white chalk cliffs which drop sheer into the North Sea, is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest – a photographer’s dream.
