It was extremely comfortable with everything we needed. We did struggle a bit to find the car parking and feel the instructions should be a bit more clearer.

A washing machine would be useful. It felt a bit unwelcoming , no welcome pack and a “to do” list with the bedding etc. otherwise it’s a lovely property in a nice location and we all enjoyed it.

Sorry if you had trouble locating the cottage, we will review the instructions. Regarding the washing machine, there was only room for a washing machine or a dishwasher and we thought a dishwasher would be more useful. Property Owner

  • "Unfortunately after 3 happy years in this property we will not be returning due to the ridiculous attitude of a man who told us to remove a car from a parking space which he said ‘wasn’t a space’."

It remained empty for the whole of our stay whereas we had used it in the two years previously. We originally booked this property for the 2 spaces advertised.

Due to circumstances out of our control the new owners of the shared car park had decided to assigned car parking spaces to each property, previously there were no markings, so ew could fit 2 cars in front of the cottage. Now the car park has been divided into marked out parking bays, there is now only one space available for one car. We are sorry that this man was rude and discourteous. We are looking into taking part of the seating area away, to make an extra space. Property Owner

However the abuse that we were subject to by one of the Mariners house management committee was uncalled for harassment and bullying. Due to a car parking issue. Totally uncalled for and if he is a director on the management committee he should be ashamed of himself.

Everything that you need for a stay in there. Very comfortable to chill after a day exploring the area. Beautiful views from the cottage. Was concerned about parking prior to arrival after seeing a few reviews saying there had been problems but on messaging Sykes got told there was a locked chain across entrance and was given code for this. Abit difficult to find on the street, directions given on email to property but could maybe benefit from a sign on the wall where the turning is. Would recommend and would return.

  • "Lovely property in a great location."

One slight niggle was that someone was parked in the allocated space when we arrived and we had difficulty getting parked as a result. It seems the allocated space is actually shared, and there is technically room, but it would be good to know in advance that we'd be sharing the space, and also the person parking there could park more considerately. One suggested improvement is black out blinds or curtains in the bedrooms that get very light with the existing blinds. Aside from these points it's a lovely place to stay, and for once in a holiday home the mattresses on the beds were really comfortable.

  • "Echoing the comments of previous occupants; the car parking situation caused stress and marred the stay."

Access to the outdoor seating area and parking space was obscured by a neighbour's car. A resident, who permanently lives at the site, states the owner of Mews Cottage allows her friend to park there. Parking apparently causes a massive headache for residents. Phone calls to Sykes proved useless and the situation was only improved by us placing a note on the neighbour's car and speaking to them. This is not how we want to spend our time on holiday! Zero out of ten to Sykes for customer service. We believe these comments meet the review policy. Please note we did not have a contact number for the owner. The only number provided was for Yorkshire Country Cottages.

The cottage was comfortable and clean with great facilities. We would recommend and will likely return. Minor criticism about the old car parked up in the parking spot outside the cottage which never moved all week. I remember this car being at the property three years ago. We had to park in the space for cottage two and because it was jubilee week every cottage was booked and made the parking very tight. Thank you for a great stay!

A dishwasher would have been a plus as most places do have one these days. On the negative side there was no mattress cover on the double bed and the waste outlet in the en-suite shower was very dirty with big clumps of hair trapped also the blind in the main bedroom was very dusty. On our last evening one of the bulbs blew in one of the wall lights in main bedroom and caused all the ceiling lights upstairs to trip unfortunately the trip box was a key pad for which we did not have a number otherwise we could have flipped the switch this is perhaps worth noting on what to do if this happens as we had no-one to contact. Overall the cottage is lovely and we enjoyed our stay.

Just a few issues; 1. It was not very clean when we arrived, upstairs was dusty, there was breakfast cereal in the rug under the dining table. 2. A local resident was regularly using one of our allocated parking places. Made for a very inconvenient arrival and an unpleasant conversation. 3. The velux window above the dining table leaks. • "A nice cottage which would be even nicer with a few improvements."

As stated in a previous review, the boiler is incredibly noisy and we had to turn the heating off at night or it would have kept us awake. This wasn't too much of an issue as it wasn't cold but I can imagine it would be a problem during a cold spell. The cottage is mostly well equipped, the decoration stylish and the beds comfortable. It is let down however by the strange layout of the kitchen. This is a very large room for a smallish cottage and could easily have accommodated a dishwasher and good-size fridge/freezer. Instead, there is a whole bank of empty ktichen units on the far side, with a tiny stand-alone freezer on the counter-top and a small fridge underneath, with no dishwasher. It would also have been nice to have a wifi connection.

  • "Generally nice."

Bedrooms great. Washing machine when drying sounds loud and worn. Hob tricky to master and noisey beeping. Boiler internal pump vibrates to excess. Had to turn boiler off each night to get to sleep. Electronic thermostat bit cryptic. Downstairs shower squeals loudly, in use, the sound resonates through whole property, it likely requires a bubble trap/vent required for a thermostatic mixer shower in the hot feed. Dusty around radio speakers in living room. Front door rotting, flaking paint/putty. Sash windows tight to raise, suspect wet swollen timber. There were 12 cars in the car park every day, often double parked. Front of car park has slumped and will likely catastophically fall down hill following heavy rainfall.

  • "Great location and easy parking for two cars."

The cottage had everything we needed but I think some attention to the window blinds is needed to make all the bedrooms darker to be able to sleep better, also attention needed to cleaning of certain areas of the cottage. We did have a good week in Whitby, with a nice welcome pack from Yorkshire Coast Cottages and fantastic weather. We recommend Yorkshire Coast Cottages, the staff in the office were great.

Thank you for your recent feedback The roman blind in the twin bedroom does have blackout lining and I acknowledge on a bright morning that light can still leak through around the edges and also with the venetian blind. I am sorry that the cleaning wasn't to your satisfaction. Please advise the areas which required attention, and I will inform the housekeeping staff. I am pleased you still had a good holiday in Whitby and was blessed with very good weather. I can also confirm that we are replacing the doors and windows, however we are just waiting for planning permission to be passed. Kind Regards. Property Owner

The property

Mews Cottage is a charming period property located off Whitby’s prestigious St Hilda’s Terrace, near the lovely Pannett Park. The cottage benefits from its own private parking space for one car, a real boon in the centre of town.

It is finished to a very high standard, offering spacious accommodation for five people.

A ground floor bedroom and bathroom are a real advantage for visitors with mobility issues. Park your car immediately in front of the cottage and enter the hallway which leads to a light and welcoming sitting room with views over the town towards the harbour.

Relax on the comfortable sofas and, in a quieter moment, borrow a book from the small library.

There’s also a TV/DVD and WiFi for entertainment at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

A dining area completes the space. Double doors link the dining area to a large kitchen, fitted with stylish contemporary units.

The ground floor also has a pleasing single bedroom, decorated in sunny shades, plus a bathroom with a bath, shower over, basin and WC. Moving upstairs, a beautiful king-size double bedroom with en-suite shower room awaits.

The décor is so restful and organic: willow-patterned fabrics, a real wood floor and exposed beams, with a lovely easy chair and lamps for reading.

Wake up to views over to the harbour. Across the landing, there is a twin bedroom, tastefully decorated in lavender hues, also boasting long-reaching views towards the town and harbour.

Wooden flooring and an original (decorative) fireplace add old-world charm. To the outside is a small area with seating.

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a coffee and breathe in that lovely seaside air – instant rejuvenation! A short stroll and you are right in the heart of the thriving harbour, with bustling restaurants, cafes and bars which line the waterfront.

Rest a while and watch the world go by as pretty boats depart for the heritage coast and children drop their crabbing lines into the River Esk.

It’s a wonderful atmosphere. The Yorkshire coast is a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, quaint fishing villages, peaceful bays and miles of long sandy beaches.

Robin Hood’s Bay is a fossil hunter’s paradise and the village, with its maze of cobbled streets leading down to the beach, is picture-perfect.

Further south, Bempton Cliffs are home to nearly half a million seabirds, including puffins, making this stretch of coastline the UK’s largest mainland seabird colony. With so much to see and do, one visit may not be enough.

Mews Cottage is a homely and refined base from which to explore this stunning part of the UK.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.
