  • "This is the second time we have stayed at Sleepers and we love it and I’m sure we will be back again in the next year."

We find it comfortable and cosy and in an ideal location and having the parking space is a god send in Whitby! We think this cottage is great value for money, not overly luxurious but not overly expensive either so think the cottage is of a good standard for the price we pay. The view from the lounge windows is wonderful and we saw some amazing sunrises with the sun rising across the water from us. As in the previous review, there did seem to be an issue with the shower temperature, however, these things happen in holiday cottages just as they might in your own home so we contacted the owners using the details in the information pack and managed to sort out the problem quickly and easily between us. We were then able to enjoy hot showers for the rest of the week. We did not have a problem with the heating or finding the temperature control as it is fixed to the wall. The cottage seemed to get warm very quickly once the heating was on so worked well for us. It’s great that it has 2 toilets especially one by the front door, very useful! Plenty of plates and dishes which makes sense as there is a dishwasher so it meant we could put things in the dishwasher and wait until it was full instead of having to set it I ff half empty because we had run out of plates . There’s plenty of worktop space to store any dry food and a large fridge freezer. We didn’t use the cooker as there are so many restaurants and takeaways in Whitby to try! We found the bed comfortable and had no problems sleeping, maybe the key to this is trying out the many pubs in Whitby! We used the washer dryer which is great as we could wash our clothes when we had got back from walking the dog. The cottage is ideal for us and suits what we need perfectly and we will definitely be back again!

  • "Bridget Jones thought she was going on a luxury spa weekend and found herself in a music festival yurt: I know how she felt."

Entry at the back of the property revealed a lacklustre double room (a stack of cushions you have to shove in the wardrobe does not a bedroom make). The mattress looks and feels like a ploughed field. The second bedroom may well be a delight for toddlers but for an adult…no. We were also aware of a strange odour. The living/kitchen/dining area is quite aesthetically pleasing but the sofas are not particularly comfortable (and what is it about excessive cushions?!?). There are so many plates and bowls in the cupboards there is nowhere to store food. The gas jet mentioned in a previous review is still inoperative. The cooker is a bit dodgy too. The showers on “I’m A Celebrity “ are probably better than the one here: no one managed to have a warm, let alone hot, shower while we were here. This is once you’ve clambered over the bath taps and found your Torville and Dean sense of gravity because there is no shower mat. We tried the bath. It filled with lukewarm brown water so gave up on that. When emptied, it looked as though we had washed bricks in there. The grouting could do with a good scrub too. The information pack is dog eared, full of crossings out and out of date(2022 bus timetable and it’s nearly 2024 and we know COVID restrictions meant changes but we’ve exempt now: time to remove that sheet and maybe put some “non essentials” back). It proudly lists the plethora of crockery (but there are actually 18 bowls not 12) (nowhere to store your cornflakes but 18 bowls to eat them from)) but doesn’t mention where the heating controls are. The neighbours have jet washed the slabs and tried to turn them into a patio. We have returned to all of the many cottages we have rented over the years at least once: we won’t be back here. In fact we left on Thursday. I suggest the owners book themselves in for a week to understand the dismal experience Sleepers offers.

Maintenance of the property was not very good i.e. Boiler pressure was at zero (I am a boiler engineer so fixed it ,it was left working at 1.5Bar) the toilet upstairs push button very stiff, tap in the lower bathroom very stiff my wife could not use it, the windows needed a clean (outside) otherwise the property was clean

It was very convenient for easy access to the town centre and all the attractions of Whitby. Also it was very handy to be able to park the car in the dedicated space so near to the cottage. However the tap in the downstairs bathroom needs repair/replacement as it was very difficult indeed to operate. Also the extractor fan in that room needs attention as it was blowing back into the room. We would happily return for another stay.

We could walk to the co op in 2 mins and the centre of Whitby in 5 mins all on the flat which like I said is near impossible! Apart from that the cottage was comfortable and clean and met all our needs! The views from upstairs ( lounge windows ) were really lovely with a view of Abby etc and the stream trains going past was novel. We have a dog and found a lovely safe walk at the side of the track ( just outside cottage ) that had some amazing views! I would definitely recommend this cottage especially if you struggle with the steep hills that surround the whole of Whitby.

It’s ideal for a small family or couple. There is no enclosed area for the dog but we have always managed with a lead or extending lead from the doorstep. The sleeping arrangements are great for kids but sadly our offspring are both near 6 foot and we’ve sadly outgrown the cottage! The trains passed in the evening a couple of times and notably at 6:30am. Not an issue for us but late sleepers beware! We make daily use of the coop, and fish and chips, pizza and curry are all a 5 min walk away. The parking space is a real plus too. Views are excellent, house is toasty. Sad we can no longer fit in! It is ideally located, very close to shops for supplies, (such as the Co-op) Whitby's attractions, bars and restaurants. The cottage itself is very homely, warm and cosy. It has everything you need, with a well kitted out kitchen and is a great base. The trains passing did not disturb us at all and it was fun to see them going past with the added bonus of being close to the railway path to walk along to Ruswarp in 30 minutes. The washing machine/dryer was very handy especially for a winter stay. The upstairs toilet as you come in to the property as well as the bathroom downstairs is a god send especially when used to this at home. We had the best time in Whitby and this beautiful cottage made our stay perfect.

We loved watching the steam trains go past and ideally located for strolls into Whitby itself. The only downside to the holiday home was the lack of cleaning products available! I’ve never stayed in a property where there wasn’t even a bottle of surface spray!! The toilet downstairs leaked all the time and there was a dreadful smell from the drain in the bathroom, we kept having to clean up the water on the floor each day. We had to leave a day early due to family illness but struggled to clean due to the vac being blocked and not picking up! I know these are small issues but not things I wished to be facing whilst on holiday!

We have never found the trains intrusive and always have a lovely stay. We’ve also never really got the heating right, but it’s always been warm, this year through storms Eunice and Franklin we were toasty. • "We loved our stay in Whitby."

The cottage is in a fantastic position near to everything but far enough away to be quiet. The trains going by was a bonus for me. Sadly the cottage facilities were a bit tired and lacking; in the kitchen there was a dishwasher but NO dishwasher tablets. The kitchen utensils were poor, broken spatula, pans scratched due to there being no wooden or silicone utensils. Kitchen drawers needed a clean, crumbs and old tea towels and questionable oven gloves. Lounge area very comfortable, TV a bit old (a smart tv with ability for people to use their own Netflix or Prime would be better, especially on a wet day when you might just want to chill) DVD worked but the connector to the TV didn’t fit too well meaning it made a background buzzing throughout. Double bedroom great, comfy bed and lots of storage .Bathroom was good, nice bath and super shower. Dust inside radiator and on extractor fan disappointing and a bit unpleasant Bunkbed room ; overcrowded with furniture which made the room feel claustrophobic and musty. Beds uncomfortable and certainly wouldn’t feel ok with 2 adults in this room. ( perhaps this is why there is not a photograph of this room on the website) Bed linen in this room was very tired bobbled and unpleasant ( luckily found some better in the store cupboard) Overall we did enjoy our stay just feel it needs updating. Deep cleaning and a few new purchases. Finally a welcome pack of at least milk, but a few bits like milk, bread, tea bags, salt and pepper, kitchen roll and dishwasher tablets (all which are standard in holiday let’s nowadays would be an improvement) Sadly we would not stay here again. Would recommend for 2 adults with 2 children but not for 4 adults and a dog as we had booked for in view of bunked room ) Thank you

The beds in both rooms were possibly the most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept on, ( when you wake up in pain that's not good). There was not enough coat hangers in either wardrobe. The hairdryer that was in the double room last year was missing and as the weather was so warm we had been on the beach and decided to wash our sandy clothes we then discovered that the washing machine would not spin, thankfully it was really warm and we were able to dry our dripping clothes outside. We enjoyed our stay but feel that a little more attention to the things that are very important would have made it better. We really feel that it does not meet the four tick rating that it has.

WiFi meant our daughter could nip back and revise for her GCSE mocks and our son could stay connected to his teenage phone world when we weren’t out walking the beaches, steps or wandering through town. Or crabbing- which I’m hoping he’ll have grown out of next year as with a windchill of -1 it was not my idea of fun, although he loved it. Lots of cafés are dog friendly. The best hot choc is takeout kiosk at the foot of the 199 steps, and a trip to fuzzy dogs bakery for dog treats is a must (closed tues/wed). Also if you have an eclectic party like us, the Rusty Shears for gin, cakes, coffee and a good warm up is worth a visit.
